The ‘girls support girls’ movement is good for girls in middle school and high-school. That energy is needed bc there is so much sexism and toxic masculinity that is normalised. They need to reject the nasty stereotypes they are fed at a very young age about how girls are catty, etc. Also the wave of ‘not like other girls’ begins at that age.
After that, we should be able to grow from that and engage in more radical feminism that questions why we make these choices and how your feminism empowers women as a collective. A lot of women seem to think feminism is supposed to be this super nice, friendly movement that coddles you. No, every movement has basic principles and you will be criticised if you enable toxic things.

absolutely agree! i think a lot of the ‘not like other girls’ mindset stems from hateful stereotypes. girls grow up viewing other girls negatively and don’t want to be associated with girls like that. they/we need to reject the stereotypes, and realize being like other girls is a good thing.
[–][deleted] 79 points80 points81 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yes I agree with this! I think girl's empowerment programs are important for middle and high school girls, specifically ones who go to coed schools. Girls who go to girls schools don't have the same drop in self-esteem as girls who go to mixed gender schools. They face way less stereotype threat and have more leadership opportunities.

Wow I have to look this up - as a mom to an 11yo girl, that sounds so interesting!
[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah! To be fair I read about this when I was in college like 10 years ago but I know girls perform worse when there's a threat of stereotype. So if a girl is taking a math test and is told boys are better at math before taking it, she'll do worse than she would if that stereotype hadn't been placed on her.

I agree completely regarding non-coed girls schools!
My low self esteem as a teen had a lot to do with the boys at school and the fact that they didn’t find me attractive.
Instead of working hard and making friends, my entire goal as a person became being as attractive as possible. I felt like I had nothing to offer besides my appearance, so I began an eating disorder which would end up lasting for 15 years. God, those dumb fucking boys.
Good god, if I end up having a daughter I would never send her to a coed high school!

SAME! My heart breaks for young me. She spent so much time and energy trying to be "hot" to get a boyfriend.

you nailed it.
[–]breadandbunnyFDS Newbie 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wholly agree. Especially when we're young, that's when our brains are so much more pliant to falling for sexist ideology and toxic masculinity. I've always been about girls supporting girls and women supporting women. Probably why I chose to go to a same-sex high school. I think I was lucky not to have developed that whole "mean girls" mindset or go through such a phase.

Social media seems to conflate liberal feminism with social progressivism because it has “liberal” in its name, but it is not progressive by 21st century standards. Certainly there are good things in it, but as it has morphed to become more mainstream and widely accepted, it makes huge allowances for the (sexist) status quo.
As far as I understand, one of its major flaws is that its philosophy is too individualistic, to the point that it has sometimes become nearly meaningless (“choice” feminism and serving men= empowerment), puts too much emphasis on capitalism and ignores disadvantaged women, and disenfranchises non-white women.
It tends to assume that we can just fix some laws and everything will fall into place eventually. Culture doesn’t really work like that- that’s why we still have patriarchy, racism, etc. I don’t see how anything but radical feminism can help the most exploited and marginalized women who don’t really have a “choice” in our current system.
As another poster said, lib feminism fails the critical thinking test- WHY are women the ones who are degraded in porn, who sell their bodies, who wear makeup and uncomfortable clothes, who are more likely to be sexually assaulted, who are far more likely to be murdered by their S.O., who give up their careers for domestic work and suffer economically as a result? It’s not a “choice” when your culture or economic situation forces you to comply.
[–][deleted] 30 points31 points32 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes!! Choice feminism is a very watered down version of feminism that is honestly more palatable to men. It is very individualistic and does very little to actually make systemic and systematic change. It benefits white women primarily and lacks any critical thinking about fucking patriarchy! It seems like so much of choice feminism still tiptoes around men, their egos, their feelings.
[–][deleted] 235 points236 points237 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yes!! Feminism is radical. It's not "don't judge women for their choices" it's why do women make those choices and how have we been socialized, coerced, and rewarded by the patriarchy to make those decisions.

Sorry to say that the OP is saying the opposite of this, that it is anti-feminist to criticise another woman’s choices.
[–][deleted] 59 points60 points61 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
No, she's saying it is not anti-feminist to critique women who uphold societal structures and norms that are harmful to women.

I started a whole community to women in a city once, and then got kicked out for being too feminist.
This is pretty iconic lmao
[–]needsmoresilkFDS Newbie 32 points33 points34 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Badass!
The gall of them to kick you out! How did that happen? So you made a community for women, and they chose to center men anyway? And what is “too feminist”? Too political? Too critical of male supremacy?

[–]needsmoresilkFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
WOW. That’s a great story and great learning experience. Thank you for sharing it. I sincerely hope you are able to start a pro-woman political party in Latin America. We need such parties everywhere. It is a matter of human rights.
My learning from your story is that the community’s goal should be formed at the outset (in this case politics). This way, members are, in a sense, self selected by a common shared goal. And it might be harder to reshape the purpose of the community down the line. What was your key learning?
And yes, any person who centers men will sabotage the outcome of a group or party which is trying to achieve gender parity politically. Men will sabotage by default, of course. Pickmes are unfortunately brainwashed to sabotage themselves (and us). Shame!
[–]Enough-Lingonberry-4FDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wow. That sounds like the pickme was totally subverted by the patriarchy systematic brainwashing. The whole cultural system is designed by men for men to make women want to think like her and shut down logical feminists like you. Sorry that had to happen! We're with you.

I will never understand women who say “i’m not a feminist but...” why would you be ashamed to say that you’re for women’s rights? I cannot even argue with someone who’s on that level of being a pick me

The entire post was judgy about people who have a differing opinion.
Actually they are limiting MY choices when they don't want me to judge.
My judgmental opinions are an example of free expression.
My judgments DO NOT interfere with another person's behavior.
However, the demand that I don't have the right to judge someone interferes with MY freedom.
"I want to get pregnant by my unemployed, porn-addicted boyfriend. I'll set up an OF account to make ends meet since he's on it all day. This will make him change. "
Sis, that's stupid.
"Don't judge me."
I will judge, judge until the end of time. You can do what you want. You're still stupid and I have the perfect goddamn right to say it and you should thank me.
[–]Apricot_IbexFDS Newbie 29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It’s like how we’d like our best friend to treat us- should she just make us feel good about a shitty situation we’re in, or should she tell us the cold truth so we can get out of there? Should we stand smiling in a sinking ship? Obviously, if we care about someone, we want them to know when something is wrong. We don’t lie and placate and try to fix the countless leaks. We get off the damn boat and take all the women with us.
Radical feminism is painful and full of ugly truths because it hurts to think deeply about our own oppression, and even worse, the oppression and abuse of women in extremely patriarchal cultures. Lib feminism is a shiny lie.
[–]spicyspaFDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I completely agree.
It's the whole "celebrate her choices" mentality when some of those choices especially if you have other options,, are horrible.. Do what you want to do, but I have a right to my opinion on it.

Without judgment we do dumb shit. I'm all for judging others actions and dumb ideas.
[–]companyofwolvesFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Things really started going off the rails when we as various cultures decided to throw out judgment entirely. There's a time and a place to judge, free of patriarchal religion and institutions.

I know this, yet I still struggle with telling LVW. This is one of the biggest challenges for me in becoming a HVW. I feel guilty for "mistreating women by speaking over them" which is absolute bs, of course. I know this on a rational level but not on an emotional one. Any idea on how to solve this? Maybe some books?
[–]esoldeluluPickmeisha™️ 37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Neo-liberal feminism has become highly individualistic because of identity politics. It’s a farce as it only pushes the patriarchal hegemony and further blurs the existence of women and the feminist movement.
These women who claim empowerment AND liberation are coming from a place of privilege. “I’m doing well (for being from a privileged class, status, race) so fuck the rest of the women.”
They can’t claim both. Just admit it, they’re EmPoWeReD by benefitting off of the backs of other women, especially WoC, who are oppressed and actively fucked over by the systemic racism, gender discrimination, and class hierarchy. But they miss the mark claiming they know what LIBERATION is entirely.
Liberation and feminism go hand in hand because if I’m doing fine, but I see my sisters out there who are not? Then if I’m going to call myself a feminist, I’m going to raise hell and tear down mountains for the purpose of making the life of other women just as good if not better than mine. REGARDLESS if I have anything in common (politically, racially, financially, etc.) with them or not.
Female Liberation is about liberating ALL women from OPPRESSION by the institutions of male hegemony. Do ALL women have free choice? Do they ALL have full control of their agency? Do they ALL have this privileged sense of empowerment? Fuck no, we all don’t.
Feminism IS abso-fucking-lutely about caring about the rest of women in the world AND RAISING THEM UP WITH US. This new age of FeMiniSm is just individuality politics posturing. It’s meant to dismantle women’s movement from becoming as strong as the patriarchal institutions. They act like as long as you embrace one’s FrEedumB of ChOicE, that systemic racism, structural inequality, and groups of oppressed and oppressors do not exist.
[–]AnKeWaFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That, plus I would also argue that even when a very privileged woman throws hundreds of dollars into make up and beauty (same for other kinds of performative femininity), it's not all that much of a free choice either. How come men, in general, don't do that? How come men don't wear uncomfortable high heels or make up? Damn, it's almost like it ain't that free of a choice.
[–]lluuniFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women should support and love each other, but this does NOT mean our choices are free of criticism from each other. The whole “it’s a woman’s choice” movement is toxic because it portrays every choice a woman makes as inherently feminist. This is not true, as many choices women make can actively harm other women in the world.
Believing that every choice is feminist is not feminism, it’s radical individualism. We can not achieve class consciousness through radical individualism as they are opposites. Women need to work together and make sacrifices for their liberation to be successful.
