This drug addicted idiot told me last week that I shouldn't be proud of myself for my accomplishments because my success was due to my environment and not me. This was after I told him I came from nothing and worked my ass off to finish school and move out of my abusive household.

I wish I had this advise when I was younger.

Brief story: I had been casually seeing a man for a month or so by this time (five years ago in hindsight) when he had invited me to lunch.

I thought we were having playful banter, he said he went on business trips a lot and I told him fondly if he was kidnapped I'd look for him. He scoffed but when I followed up by saying I was smart and cute enough to get by he ... changed. He stopped smiling and flatly told me that compared to other girls I'm average.. at best.

It stuck with me at how odd the tone shifted at the time. Now I know that when I turned his invitation down at a sexual relationship only down, he'd ghost me and go to the next girl..

Still. It did hurt me at the time. Now. I take it as a compliment

It's happened to me several times that ugly men are mean to me, sometimes being egged on by their pick me girlfriends. Being a confident woman with standards really offends insecure and undisciplined people for some reason.

Male friends do that too. I was talking about my problems in my previous romantic relationships and I stated most of them knew and actually told me I am too good for them and they tried to keep me as much as possible but I was overwhelmed with their lack of effort in themselves. My male friend was like "no, no, no, no, he told you you are better because he wanted to break up with you" I told him he didn"t break up and when I wanted so he tried to change himself in multiple ways, but that was ofc not enough for my friend. He made a long speech about how men try to make the woman break up with them by complimenting her(?!).

He just couldn't digest the fact that many past partners of mine knew I am more skilled, smarter and have a better standing in life.

We are no longer friends.
