Here is the story of how I gave in and bought pepper spray today even though.

I (33 f) decided this morning to go on a small hike (6km). My husband was on a business trip, but I needed a little time out in nature. We live in a small town and have several hikes we can start from our house (going only short distances through town). Hiking alone is considered safe here, yet I get scared easily when I am walking through the woods alone. So I chose a route close enough to town to be frequented by at least a few people with dogs, etc.

I started around 9 am. I walked quite fast, until I stopped to take a few pictures of nice flowers. When I continued walking around a bend there was a nordic walker who was quite close even though he was walking quite as fast as I was. Which was strange since I had stopped to take the pictures and he should not have been so close. He walked on and stopped to look in a garbage bin near a bench on the walk. I was a little uneasy at this point. So I was relieved when I saw another nordic walker coming in our direction. They seemed to know each other but their whole encounter was strange and at first i thought they would start to fight. They stopped talking when I passed and parted directly after I had passed them. The strange one from then on walked about 3 m behind me. I was annoyed because I absolutely hate it when someone walks behind you in the ssme speed and way to close for comfort. I walked faster ans hoped he would take another way than I did. He sped up too. I took a turn, he followed the same way. Still walking exactly as fast as I did. I was annoyed and a little creeped out, stopped and took my phone out, ready to fake a call, call the police or whatever. He passed and went away. I waited for a few minutes before I followed and was relieved when he went in the other direction than I had to.

How can you be so socially unapt? It is super creepy to walk 3 m behind a person on a completely empty hike! Especially since he already behaved kind of srange before. Men really have no idea how scary it can be to be out alone as a woman.

I cannot put my finger on it, but this whole encounter was so strange! So, after 33 years I now ordered pepper spray...

Sorry for the long boring story, but I was just so mad about this!
