First of all, use condoms 100% OF THE TIME, NO MATTER WHAT. If a man complains about condoms that is a huge red flag telling you to get up and leave immediately.

Never get to the point you are convincing a man to wear a condom because he is already showing pornsick and unhealthy attitudes at that point, and he will probably try to slip it off or coerce you into condomless sex later. A high value man will always provide condoms in a relationship.

Second of all, if you decide for yourself you would like a personal birth control (this is not necessary, only use hormonal BC if you personally want it) you should discuss it with your doctor to find the right fit for you. I have a small hormonal IUD for the sole purpose of having little to no periods, not for a mans comfort. We use condoms every single time and he has never even once suggested otherwise because he cares about his and my reproductive health.

Condoms, condoms, condoms. Make the boys use a damn condom. It's your body. Teenage boys suck at sex anyway. You don't need to be out here risking your physical and emotional wellbeing for sex with clueless high schoolers who probably don't even know how to get you off. If they won't wear a condom when you ask they don't deserve access to your body.

Personally I don't want to put any artificial hormones in my body, I try (to a radical degree) to limit my waste production, I have a partner who is impeccably respectful of my boundaries, and I'm old enough that my cycle is regular to within ~2 days. So we use fertility awareness and the pull-out method (note that these are additive: we only have sex on days where I am incredibly unlikely to be fertile AND he pulls out anyway. AND we have had MANY conversations about the risks inherent in what we're doing and how he will support me in the event of an unintended pregnancy)

In my country everyone is using condoms, to force a women to drink pills is considered low value. No truly loving man will let his woman to get hormones.

After many years on hormonal BC I went off it for health reasons. My ex husband started using condoms. And he was totally fine about it because he is a respectful adult human who did not want kids. We split up for other reasons but in this aspect it was a totally fine solution.

Another reason for why I recommend that is that usually women will give it all away and then the man has no reason or need to upgrade the relationship

Iud is the safest if you do not 1000% trust yourself. A copper IUD has almost no hormonal side effects, it’s really easy to remove.

Cons- it can hurt to insert, in rare casses copper ions leach out and it can make periods hurt

Do not pleasee under any case rely on plan b 1/8. Get pregnant or on an abortion.

Get a good bullet vibrator and have fun that way instead of putting yourself at huge risk

And no matter what you do - dont rely on on pull out and don’t give the guy authority or responsibility over keeping you good in that dimension

Here are your priorities-

do no get pregnant- if you are in danger of fucking up, hop on the pill or patch- whatever side effects are much better than accidental pregnancy with a trash human trust.

If you can control yourself and have boundaries, stick to condom only (trust only losers say no, and if he doesnt understand why when you’ve explained than hes a loser no exceptions)- aim for deeply committed relationships but this is up to you

Best case if possible- abstain and use a vibe, and other forms of sex, wait till you find someone you wanna marry - be with in the long run.

I'm 33 and haven't had a single relationship where a guy has complained about using condoms. I went on the pill in my early 20s and had various awful experiences (it was my introduction to how crap medical knowledge about women's issues can be), then came off and my then-boyfriend was totally supportive. Since then I've always just used condoms.

Any decent man will understand. Stand your ground.

No condoms, no sex. Repeat this to yourself until it becomes a no nonsense rule. You will never waver from it. But honestly girl, don’t have casual sex. I went through a phase and hooked up with a bunch of men because I’m a woman! And it’s my body! And I can have casual sex too and be unashamed! And while all these things are true, casual sex will not add anything to your life. But it does have great potential to ruin it. I can’t even describe the terror of waiting for HIV screening to come back or a pregnancy scare. And it’s in these moments where you feel the consequences of being a woman in today’s world. Men get to actually orgasm during sex and go about their lives without a care in the world. And please don’t bother them if you accidentally end up pregnant. I think IUDs are the best option we currently have. A five minute in-office procedure for 5-7 years of contraception? Hell yes! No systemic estrogen, just progesterone localized to the uterus. If hormonal birth control is something you want then go with the pill, or you can get an implant that I believe last 1-2 years. You can also get a hormonal IUD which also lasts 2 years and lightens periods.

Non hormonal options include a copper IUD (which lasts five years or more), a cap (the female condom), and spermicidal creams.

On top of these it is best to always use condoms as they protect against sexually transmitted diseases, which none of the other methods do. Personally I like the IUD and condoms because it feels the least invasive overall. Research, discuss all these with your doctor and figure out what would suit you best. It's ok to switch till you find what works for you.

The only thing I think that should disqualify you immediately from considering an IUD is if you have pain or unbearable anxiety during regular internal gyno exams.

I recommend you to at least speak to a trusted gyno re:IUD.

I have used IUDs for 18 years. The majority of women who use IUDs do not have horror stories to tell. Insertion is indeed painful but it's like a strong pap smear pain, not like a STABBING INTERNAL BLEEDINGpain

But some do have serious issues and side effects, so it's good to be educated on that too

With an experienced doctor, insertion is only a bit more uncomfortable than a pap smear for me. Cramps last a few hours and that's it.

(I have had it with a really old male doctor and barely felt it actually, I LOVED him. My first IUD, I had it with an older female doc and had a vagus reaction, which was the worst time, but that's just a weird body reaction that's scary, not indicative of damage. I was also a bit scared too, but for insertions after it's truly been a breeze.)

The vast majority of issues with IUDs present within the first two or three months of insertion.

For the rest of the time, if you check the strings each month yourself, you can detect any other issues later on very quickly.

I got it way before the extra small ones designed for women who have never had children were launched, too. Never had an issue (I'm 5'5" and a normal BMI) with placement or pain.

Copper IUDs are fantastic if you want to avoid hormones. This is what I had for the first 15 years.

It is truly amazing how much freer and less worried you feel knowing you have nearly guaranteed no accidental pregnancies.

Don't have to worry about getting pregnant while broke, travelling, with an abusive partner, with an FWB, with an anti-abortion president etc.

You should weigh the cost and benefits yourself, though.

For me, it's been worth it 1,000%

Also: If a guy says you MUST take BCP so his penis feels better, DITCH HIM. If he suggests withdrawal method, DITCH HIM. Your health comes first, and for a man of worth, it comes first before his pleasure.

To add to the condom recommendations : lube! Lots of it! It makes sex feel better for everyone, and reduces the likelihood of condom breakages.

I'm on the pill for hormone control reasons, but I still use condoms, because double the birth control, and also hormonal birth control will not stop you getting an STD. INSIST ON CONDOMS. Don't even treat it like an option. Have some with you in your purse. Get confident saying 'let's grab a condom before we go any further'. If they push back, don't have sex with them. Period. Even with condom use, get comfortable asking when the last time they had an STD check was, and whether they have had barrier-free sex since then. And when you start having sex, get comfortable getting checked semi-regularly yourself. You can never guarantee a partner is 100% faithful or honest, and your reproductive health is important. So many STDs can cause infertility and serious damage to women's internal organs.

In addition to condoms, this has been my experience:

NuvaRing: last I checked these contain a fraction of the hormones in even the lower dose formulas of the pill. I've been pretty happy with it.
Pill: eventually killef my libido (used to take maca capsules to make up for it). If one formula doesn't work there are many more you can try but who wants to go through all that. Stopping it after a few years then starting again lead to months of non-stop spotting which was so annoying. I tried to get the lowest dose possible but still suffered the low libido which is how I ended up getting the ring recommended to me.
Diapghragm: I'd go with a cervical cap before this bc it's smaller but good luck trying to find one even by prescription if you're in the US. They're so seldom requested that not even Planned Parenthood has it. And you'll still have to hunt down spermicidal gel to go inside.
Drugstore: they sell spermicidal sheets, sponges and gels you can shoot up there. Never tried these bc the box says it may cause discomfort which I think means it'll burn like hell. But I'd use it anyway or skip sex altogether rather than just relying on a condom. I'd say this is a decent option bc they're available OTC. Only thing is they're really expensive to use often and in comparison to what your average teen can afford.

Wear condoms - ALWAYS. STD’s are more common than pregnancy. Secondly, get on a contraceptive yesterday!!! Many women forget to take the pill on a daily basis like I did. I ended up getting pregnant at 19. I now have a 6 year old, and I’m on the Nexplanon implant. I highly recommend it, because you don’t have to worry about it and it’s good for 3 years. Be prepared that it may not work for you, but there are many options out there like IUD’s and the NuvaRing (if that’s how you spell it).

If you’re like me and paranoid up until your period because sex education scarred you, you could plan to have sex like a day or two before your period so you have peace of mind. Of course use some form of BC and a condom but that’s already been mentioned. And only date guys who are 100% on board with your contraception methods and understand the risk of pregnancy.

Edit: I say do it before your period simply for peace of mind + contraceptives. Never let a dude finish in you EVER unless you’re PLANNING to have a child

You need to have a barrier and a hormonal/nonhormonal contraceptive (birth control pills, ring, patches, implants, etc.).

The barrier method is simple. Always use condoms. If you have to convince a guy to wear one, then it is time to move on. That is a no go. This is also for your own health and safety.

For your own personal contraceptive you need to figure out what works for you and your lifestyle. Are you forgetful at taking medication everyday? Then pills are going to be a no go. But maybe something like once a week is manageable for you? Then try out the patch. If you are just flat out forgetful then don't even risk trying either of those methods. Start looking at nuvaring or the depo shot. Both are temporary and more convenient but still require maintenance on your part (you have to apply/remove rings every few weeks, and you need to be realistic about having the availability to consistently schedule your shots). The hormonal method with the least amount of upkeep and highest rate of efficacy is the nexplanon arm implant.

Some women do not do well with any kind of additional hormones, so you would then have to consider an IUD. Whatever it is, make sure you have an idea of your preferences before your GP consultation.

I personally settled on the birth control pills and condom combo. I prefer not to ovulate at all and I don't have any hereditary or lifestyle risks of developing blood clots. Other than initial nausea during my first month of starting it, I have not experienced any adverse side effects. I've been using this method for nearly 10 years and haven't had a single pregnancy scare.

I know it can be a difficult and long process for a woman to settle on a method that works for her, but it is worth it. If one method doesn't work for you, then try out another one, and actively communicate your needs and wants with your physician. You can not put a price on being in control of your reproductive health. Make it a priority.

If I were you I would get an iud and never tell my partner (or partners, because it lasts several years). Pretend you can’t take any hormonal birth control so they always always use a condom.

But I would lowkey have my backup method in place because there a lot of crazy psychotic men out there who try to impregnate women on purpose against their wish. Reddit has tons of posts like this. Often they succeed.

I’d suggest a copper coil, a copped IUD. Do not take BC or hormonal contraception if you have mental health issues (like anxiety and depression) as in many cases I’ve heard (including myself) they can exacerbate your symptoms and make things worse. Plus it can make you gain a lot of weight, which I personally am not okay with. An IUD is safe, reliable and lasts up to 10 years. However like everyone else has said, always use condoms, don’t let anyone pressure you into not using them!!!

Options: Abstinence, lots of foreplay and manual stimulation from him without need for penetration, birth control that you’ve been on for at least a month- take it same time each day or night- an hour off can make it less effective at preventing them, and condoms with that as double protection, and my goodness do not use the bare skin ones (have had 4 break over the years). Stay informed and don’t feel shy asking a gyno for help or having your bf go with you
