So years ago, dude invites me on a date, I suggest my favorite restaurant. It’s an oyster and steak joint that I go to twice a month or so to treat myself

We meet and walk to the place and he is visibly nervous about something. I attribute it to first date jitters. In hindsight I think it was because this place just looks expensive. We find a spot at the bar and I’m marking off the oysters I want on the little oyster menu. Then I mention I want a specialty cocktail (cucumber jalapeño) that they’ve made for me before but isn’t on the menu

Dude looks uncomfortable, shifting side to side and looking away. He tries to be polite and laugh it off, mentions how it’s expensive. (4 oysters at $~2.25 each, $10 cocktail). Well, yours truly senses his apprehension and I really just wanted oysters and a nice drink so I shrugged and told him I would pay for myself. He brightened up until I apologized and said I thought it was a date. He said it was, started explaining, and I just nodded like my mother used to do when I was a child and word vomiting nonsense at her.

We drank and talked and the mood lightened. He joked a few times that he would pay for me since I was so nice.

I finished my drink before he finished his, got my check, dropped cash + a very generous tip and told him it was a lovely evening and I wish him the best

He got the hint and never texted me again
