If I see a rape scene in a show/movie it's really no surprise to me because I'm sure it's a man that made it and men that are going to watch it. I'm already aware that men are complete trash. What I'm most saddened by is the actress that allowed herself to be filmed in a rape scene, I'm so fucking disappointed in her. Especially because I know she had other options.

Can we add “pedophilia in books” to the list of disgusting plot devices that is overused? I don’t read much anymore but off the top of my head “The Kite Runner”, “City of Thieves” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, “Beasts of No Nations” , “The Outsider”.

I have never read a child rape scene and been like “this book was made better by this”. I get that it’s important for some plots, but a lot of the time it just seems gratuitous.

Theres an anime I watched where the main character has a history of SA. Not once is it shown in graphic detail. It is heavily alluded to and those scenes still made me sick so yes you don't "need" these scenes to add trauma you can add it without showing it. Banana fish in case anyone was curious.

Just talking about it or reading about it is enough and overwhelming, I don't feel comfortable watching it. It's like adults watching minor shit, that is illegal. You don't see that in the tv, right? No because it's wrong and disgusting. And you get punished for it. Rape scenes should be treated the same. How does this not sink into people's heads. Rape scenes are not necessarily and they don't benefit anyone, only sickos that are into it. It should never be used for entertainment ever. And then there's porn.....which is like both of these things in one......

Rape scenes in movies remind me that e v e r y o n e knows that men are a detriment to female existence, but very few people on this planet wish to discuss it or hate men for it.

Its like they grabbed a glaring issue, reminded me it exists, and I bask in fury knowing that the people reminding me this issue exists wouldnt agree with even half of the suggestions i have in getting rid of it. Like someone beat the shit out of you, and then went, "haha i hit you!" a while later.

This. I got so uncomfortable when I was watching movies and shows as a kid and a rape scene came out of nowhere. Can we start a movement to shame this practice?? Its lazy writing at best and a scare tactic at worst (to remind us of our own vulnerability en masse)

Any type of media always has the goal of communicating a message. We always have to ask ourselves what that message is, and what belief systems accompany that message.

What makes a piece of media depicting violence against women misogynistic is not the content typically, but the context. What I mean by this is that if you produce media that depicts violence against women in a way that makes it sexy, funny, or diminishes the seriousness of the content, you are likely sending a message that violence against women is acceptable. This can have to do with the actual scenes that are depicted, the dialogue, the way that it’s filmed and the way that the scenes are framed, or whether the characters are supposed to be good or bad. There are a lot of little details that go into this, and directors, writers, camera people, editors, and producers..etc are very educated in all of these details and what they signify to an audience.

If you are presenting violence in a way that takes it seriously, does not make it appear sexy or gratuitous, and sends the message that this is not ok, then it’s unlikely you are perpetuating misogynistic beliefs.

Personally, I don’t watch a lot of things that have violence against women because I just find it unpleasant, but there is definitely media out there that takes violence against women very seriously and doesn’t portray it in a way that is meant to be sexy or entertaining. It’s not difficult at all to produce media about serious topics like rape and domestic violence without having gratuitous scenes of violence against women.

Often the more graphic something is the more it actually distracts from the seriousness of the subject matter. Just because we can depict a violent rape scene, doesn’t mean we actually need that scene visually presented to represent the seriousness of the crime. The gravity of sexual violence is more profound when there’s more nuance included in the depiction besides just showing the graphic action.

What I’ve noticed is that a lot of people producing this kind of content don’t have a very good grasp on the actual physical, psychological, and emotional impact, so their depictions are very focused on the physical act itself, and they neglect what the real trauma stems from, which has a much more psychological and emotional basis, because it’s a trauma that exists because of a violation of safety and autonomy within ones own body. Some media gets it right. Some movies that are based on real horrific acts of violence, and certain movies directed by women I found to have a more comprehensive examination of violence against women.

I don’t think it makes any sense to not have any depictions of violence against, because I’m not a fan of censorship in general, and because it’s part of the reality of the world that there is violence against women, so we should be able to portray it in media. That being said, it is absolutely imperative to critique any depictions of violence against women, and be able to pick a part which depictions are based in genuine empathy and for the purpose of telling an important story, and which depictions are gratuitous and misogynistic. There are many many examples of violence against women in media that serve no real purpose in the story and are shot in a way to be erotic or entertaining, and the messages those depictions send to audiences is unethical and dangerous. Anyone who’s going to get upset at me for pointing out that those depictions are dangerous is telling me that they are OK with the misogynistic messages that media is perpetuating.
