This is too real for Indians. Centuries of patriarchy have made the male entitlement a norm in India. It’s so engrained in the average mindset that misogyny, harassment and sexism all are just mere shades of a routine day. And even the most egregious crimes against women are, well, just background tabloid material.

love seeing other WOC call out the men in their communities! these guys tend to act like they’re the only ones experiencing racism, and take it out on the women who have to deal with both racism and misogyny from men of all races, including our own. 🙄 oh and as a Black woman, the widespread MYTH(issa myth y’all) of the BBC hasn’t made our men man up not one bit 😂 men are collectively dumpster juice!

The issue is systemic and cyclical, as I see it. In an extremely patriarchal culture like ours, women’s only power comes through her relationships with her male family members; and of those, her sons are most likely to have heavy attachments to her (since women do 100% of the childcare). This of course leads to the woman “babying” her sons far past the appropriate age and refusing to set up any healthy boundaries, so the sons become completely emotionally (and otherwise) dependent on their mothers.

This leads to a number of interrelated issues which lead her sons to putting her on a pedestal and devaluing other women. For one, the woman spends less time/energy on her daughters, because they don’t have the promise of power attached to their genitalia, and their sons learn quickly that they are worth more than their sisters. For two, they jealously guard against potential daughters-in-law who might stand up to their sons— and by proxy to the woman herself— thus limiting her influence over him. This is done by reinforcing misogynistic stereotypes about women who dress boldly, speak boldly, or act boldly, which the son then further absorbs.

Eventually the son does find a suitable doormat for the woman to trample on, and she’s subjugated until she has sons of her own. Thus the cycle repeats ad infinitum.

Now, noting all of this, I will additionally say that once he’s an adult, the onus is 100% on him for unlearning and untangling the misogynistic teachings of his parents, but of course most men don’t bother because being a little prince for no effort suits them just fine.
