I have only thought about it recently.. how women from the past didn't 'prostitute' bc of their free will. Men sold them for profit. It's so horrifying.. especially stands out Muslim Ottoman empire sexual slavery. Nobody talks about it but it was very very major. Tens and hundred thousands white Slavic (Russian and ukrainian mostly) girls and women (but mostly girls aged 5-15 🤢) were raped in front of their family, the virgin non-raped ones were massively shipped to Turkey to be sold as sex and domestic slaves for men. The more attractive ones were 'lucky' enough to become a Sultan's harem. Or just some rich Pasha's harem. Now I'm saying they are lucky because it's better than the alternative...
Which is being sold to brothel and having to go though tons of filthy men daily.... Or being sold to a single man who wanted a maid and a rape meat in one.. this lasted for many centuries, and strongly linked to tatar invasion who were these same animales who sold them off to farther Muslim countries.
It's horrifying and i can't think about it without wanting to cry. I'm of Russian origin too, and we were even taught this sh1t in history books ('especially were valued the most beautiful girls'). Sure.. valued... Just brutally raped and discarded...

And also even if we assume in the past there were fair share of independent women who sold sex for money and kept them themselves (not some pimp male who abducted her) they did not do it because they were bad or how patriarchy portrays them.
They were being raped on the daily basis.. they just decided if they can't stop the rape then at least they can charge it to get some 'benefit'. You can say it's women becoming smarter.

I did read all of it. I can't stop hurting for our female ancestors.. think of each one of them. Date back hundreds and thousands of years.. all of them experienced male violence.. all of them were raped. All of them were forced to gestate and birth kids they probably never wanted.. all of them experienced this pain of being weak and pathetic, unable to do anything about your miserable state.. all of them were forced to somehow survive in the man's world.
I think of all of them and proudly proclaiming that the cycle of females being abused ends with me. No daughter or granddaughter of mine will ever be abused because she will never be born.

Often ancient Egypt is touted as being less patriarchal. Sadly this isn't true, it wasn't a racist society, but still sexist and classist. Female child and adult prostitution was not uncommon, and the only ones allowed to have a profession of any kind were men. Women's bodies were less mystified but not less controlled. It seems that since humans have formed societies, they have always been patriarchal. Now the few women with relative freedom are celebrating the very thing that kills, rapes and enslaves their sisters. Sad state of affairs.

i love this post, thank you! it infuriates me how the painful reality of sex work is constantly marketed as women empowerment. sex work is the farthest thing from empowerment for women, it sure is empowering for men. sex work greatly benefits males hence why it exists and is constantly romanticized by the media.

I absolutely hate that prostitution is referred to as “sex work”. Sex is consensual and incredible, it is not work. Prostitution, however, is exploitative, degrading, and much of the time, not consensual.

To me, work usually indicates that there are protections in place for laborers. This is anything but the case for people who are using sex as a means for income. Very rarely are they afforded any kind of legal protections in the way that workers in other industries are.

Yeah I have never quite been able to wrap my head around the “prostitution=empowering” concept. Every single woman I know who has engaged in prostitution was very much being exploited by men in her life. It was done out of duress, and therefore not a consensual or “empowering” choice. So many of them were abused by the men paying for sex or the men taking their money and they often had zero recourse to do anything about it. It truly does exist because men feel entitled to women’s bodies.
This is a fantastic reply that thoroughly summarizes why history matters so much when talking about modern society.

I hate it when they start comparing prostitution to actual work and say that basically everyone is selling their bodies in different ways.
Add to that, there is a lot of glamorisation of harems in art, literature and history and they paint it as something women wanted to happen to them as if it's not just basic sexual slavery.

I'm currently reading Half the Sky (by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn). The first section doesn't focus on the history of sexual slavery so much as the current atrocities women in developing countries face but there is obviously a lot of overlap. Not gonna lie, it's made me cry a few times but I still highly recommend it.

My only beef with this post is that she forgot to mention Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire. Theodora was herself a slave/prostitute/“actress” who was so amazing that Future Emperor Justinian changed the law so he could marry her. She then went on to outlaw prostitution and set up communes for freed women who escaped the clutches of prostitution. She was also known to go to the slave markets, buy little girls, set them free, and provide housing, education, and trade apprenticeships for them. Amazing woman. Look her up!
