Hmm. If you're a jeweler or someone who can artistically create an individual piece of fine jewelry (I have a friend like that!) then I see no issues with making your own engagement ring for your fiance. Making it out of cheap materials with shoddy craftsmanship however gets a firm pass from me.

If he can't afford a ring how is he going to afford a honeymoon, a down payment on a house, a mortgage, groceries for next 30+ years, anniversaries, a child (if wanted), doctors appointments, college.......retirement.....?

The guy who cheaps out on the rings is the same guy who will cheap out on a thousand other essential things in the course of the relationship. I have seen examples of this and I know it is true. The woman in this situation will provide everything herself or go without, and if that's the case what even is the point?

I still have the ring a High school bf made for me and proposed to me with. Its metal, with wrapping and a melted stone like bit where the gem would be. He liked the second attempt at making it better because he messed up the wire wrap the first time. I'm glad he ended it, though. We were way too young. Lol
