I was a forever girlfriend for ten years. He finally proposed and we were engaged for a year in a half. We divorced in two years. It took me so long to say I want more and to tell everyone that I was done. My family kept pushing me towards him telling me to make it work. I had to finally say no to him and everyone.

He married a woman 6 years younger the same year we divorced.

I was a forever girlfriend, and was so offended when people asked me this. They were right though. I just wish they would say:"You deserve better", instead of: "Poor you, he wouldn't even marry you, he's probably cheating".

My dad said that any man that waits more than a year to propose, or at least talk very very seriously about marriage and start actively taking steps to go ring shopping etc., is not serious about you.

While not everybody is built the same, this has been very consistent with my own experience, as well as with the experience of women I know. I once had a friend who was a forever girlfriend for 10 years. TEN!

I would never get married or live with another man again, but that's just me. I don't trust any man to put myself in such a vulnerable position.

I agree with this sentiment. If you want marriage and he is dragging his feet. It is a big old red flag. But some women like myself do not want to get married for other reasons. If you have your life together and have financial independence marriage can really fuck your life. A man can show commitment in other ways than marriage, but it is important to not make excuses for your man. You shouldbe getting what you want in life. I am sooopo glad i didnt marry my N ex because it would have been horrible to divorce him. I was able to dump his cheating ass and move on quickly. Never stop vetting.

I think women shouldn't be calling it "forever girlfriend" if it is by choice. Like Taylor swift there was a post about her here. I think she is a huge pickme. But with that much money to your name you are SMART to not get married. Do not give a man your hard earned cash. It should always be about maximixing value for yourself. And society being all "omg marriage is the best" when I see all the time it doesn't benefit the women at all. Stay vigilant.

Especially if you are in your late 20s & 30s, I would say its a big red flag. This woman I worked with got into a relationship with a man at 29 and he didn't propose until she was 34. Apparently when she showed her father the ring he said "wow, I never thought it would happen!" that's just sad...
