I know there's been a ton on this on the sub today but I'm almost dumbfounded by the response to the twitter thread calling on SWers to engage in more ethical practices. Kudos to whoever runs the FDS twitter for trying to engage in this particular conversation. SW maintains the status quo. There is nothing feminist or revolutionary about it and to state otherwise is either a bold faced lie or extreme cognitive dissonance.

Some interesting points:

Women who engage in SW are simultaneously empowered and yet victims of the deranged shit males want. Which one is it?

Despite decades of social science research and evidence that proves time and time again that porn is violent, is harmful to women and children, and negatively impacts sexual relationships, SWs will gaslight you and say it isn't violent and no research proves otherwise. This is demonstrably false. It's like the tobacco industry saying cigarettes don't cause cancer.

SWers are better feminists because... I still don't know, yet when you criticize their profession, they'll immediately call you ugly and body shame you.

Males will always defend SWers right to engage in the industry. That should be your first tipoff the industry isn't showing it to the patriarchy.

SW directly maps into male sexual desire and the male gaze. It does not center women AT ALL. It is part of a larger society that dehumanizes and objectifies women. It supports male sexual entitlement towards all women. It is a cog in the machine of patriarchy and is not part dismantling it.

With all that said, I don't think SWers should be treated like they're disposable or without humanity. But for the "SW is empowerment" minded crowd it is important to be honest about the industry and the harm it causes. Yes, you might individually feel empowered because you're making money from it but nothing exists in a vacuum. You can't separate it from the larger system that is predicated on women's oppression, subordination, and exploitation.
