Sexism is not just a prejudice, but a system by which the privileged class wields and maintains power over the oppressed class. Women are the ones who raise and teach children, so they are the ones with the power to set the rules for society and are ultimately responsible for all forms of sexism. Many things might appear to be sexist against women, but if you think about it you’ll realize that they’re actually sexist against men.

Not really, of course. I’m just making a point about feminists who believe the inverse.

  • “Women are more emotional” is actually misandrist, not misogynist, because it perpetuates the idea that men’s emotional needs aren’t as important as women’s.

  • “You’re just angry because you’re on your period” is misandrist, not misogynist, because it suggests that hormonal women aren’t responsible for controlling their emotions the way men are.

  • “A woman’s place is in the home” is actually misandrist, not misogynist, because it places the burden of providing for the family entirely on men. A man whose wife has to work to help make ends meet is seen as less of a man - to say nothing of what society thinks of men whose wives earn more than they do.

  • When women do work outside the home, they are usually limited to certain jobs like teaching or nursing. This is misandrist, not misogynist, because women are not expected to work dangerous, dirty, disgusting, or distasteful jobs in order to avoid homelessness.

  • “All women should be mothers” is misandrist, not misogynist, because it gives women a position of unearned power within the family, including and especially the power to instill in children their own personal beliefs and biases about gender roles.

  • The objectification of women in media is misandrist, not misogynist, because it is based on the presumption that men are horny animals who think with their dicks and only care about one thing, and reinforces the prejudice that sex is the only form of intimacy that men are allowed to experience.

Again, not a serious post, although a lot of these stereotypes really do cut both ways, and their control over what children are raised to believe gives women a lot more personal and systemic power than feminists want to admit. (Yes, I hyperlinked the same article three times. It’s very important to me. Here’s a meta-analysis from 1998 that found the same thing, which makes it odd that the researchers in the article were surprised by their findings.)

This was inspired by the claim that the “bumbling dad” stereotype that has pervaded sitcoms and comic strips ever since Married… with Children premiered is actually sexist against the wiser, more competent women who stay married to these idiots. Sexism is not binary, and a misandrist stereotype with misogynistic connotations is still a misandrist stereotype (and vice-versa). Elevating women’s needs and issues above men’s and denying women agency in the exploitation and perpetuation of the system of gender roles they erroneously refer to as patriarchy is the exact kind of patriarchal chauvinism that feminists claim to be fighting against.
