(Rant warning )

Just wanted to put out there, having lived half my life in countries where abortion is illegal, that I think this decision is not fundamentally about women’s rights, gender or men’s rights. The attack on our rights in this is brutal, but it is the shiny gift wrapped box. What’s really inside that box, is the decline of capitalism and a relative impoverishment of we, the people. The post -war liberal order that seemed to end in chunks, from the 80s to the 2008 crisis, then Trump, is formally closed out now. The twentieth and twenty first centuries are in suspension.

As in the developing world, the rich will find a way to get healthcare and abortion access. Europe and East Asia will for now retain abortion rights. Some US states will enshrine them as well. That this happened, and after all this time, in the declining capitol of the world, is a sign of a system unable to maintain the stability for a prosperous and democratic social compromise, amid rusting institutions and cultural decay.

The crazies that are the republican party , since the dems became the mean, cold, conservative side- now ineffective even as that, have impacted the court for a long time already. This decision is , intentionally or not, a class discipline for the plebeians. There is no more olive branch, the olive tree was stolen and sold on amazon, there’s just a stick.

It will be a mistake to see this as at root a gender issue or even about family planning, religion, or healthcare. It is ultimately a class issue that comes from a decline. The elites are richer than ever but they are unable to actually come together to get society back on the rails. Their house is in disorder.

The conclusion is, demanding rights from the current position citizens are in won’t work, the rulers don’t any longer know how to give them to us. Civil society and popular initiatives, from sports to arts to home owners to unions, need to create structures of cooperation. To build visible, non partisan, functional spaces and services, that help people meet their daily needs - and then make demands for out rights standing on that edifice, of a revitalized, vibrant culture. Bargain and demand from there, from that stronger position.

Not only as angry, politicized individuals coming out for street protests, or doing petitions and boycotts, who can only go home with nothing in hand once we become exhausted.

If this building up of non party, citizen power does not happen, cynical politicians will exploit this ruling to promise changes that won’t come. And if they do come, it will be in the form of divided geographical enclaves that will only further dysfunction and only postpone further breakdown.
