I think we can all agree that a widening and deepening of discourse around gender is of benefit to everyone.

For me, my push back around the term ‘male privilege’ revolves entirely around how it seems to suggest there is just one type of privilege, of which men are the sole benefactor.

As whilst there certainly are male ‘privileges’, there are also alternate and opposing privileges experienced by women too.

So is there space to change the conversation?

There's a good reason why Feminists prefer to use "Benevolent Sexism" to describe the Social benefits that Women enjoy, because "Female Privilege" has a negative connotation and is accusatory by nature. The biggest problem with "Male Privilege" is that its used as a blanket term to paint ALL Men with a broad brush, even though not all Men are born equal. So, you end up with scenarios where disabled,poor,homeless,minority&suicidal Men are also put under the same category as "Privilege".

Privilege is a useful term when its used to correctly identify something measurable like wealth&social status of a certain group(ie:billionaires), "Male Privilege" is a much more nebulous because not all men have the same status or wealth or looks. For Ex:We could say that Assertive men being treated with more respect&seriousness than the average Woman is a form of "Male Privilege" but the problem is that not ALL Men are assertive, so what about them?

That men are seen as more competent is a common but very debatable trope in 2021. It probably lingers in stereotypically masculine things like cars and sports, but in a lot of cases, decades of "grrl power" campaigns have led to the expectation that women are always at least as (if not more) competent as men are at everything, and if they aren't it's because they're being held back by the Patriarchy.

In the professional contexts, there's sometimes a situation where women might feel like they are in a sexist environment if they aren't automatically deferred to, ignoring the fact that most men in the workplace also need to prove thier competence before anyone listens to them.

On the other side of this, many popular conceptions of male incompetence are seen as completely legitimate, blameworthy, and often considered anywhere from very annoying to problematic to dangerous.

Stereotypes about male incompetence are used to support much anti-male discrimination (e.g. family courts, parenting and childcare et al.) and forms the basis of a lot of misandrist rhetoric from women and feminists (e.g. allusions to men being emotionally unintelligent, and socially stunted, resulting in women having to pick up the slack via "emotional labor" and, of course, the recently popularized coup de grace called "Weaponized Incompetence," or the idea that men are doing the above more or less deliberately with the express purpose of oppressing women.)

If you ask me, this isn't a very small issue that MeN hAvE pRiViLiGe leads us to disregard male issues, It has always been rich are less oppressed than poor, not gender based.

If we had role tags, I'd ask feminist guests one non biological privilege we have.

Small thing that resonated with me, in lots of places it’s female perpetrators who are specifically excluded from rape laws, but in the UK men can’t be victims either right? Broadcasting that, that male victims are excluded from the law, might make some rumbling and push that divide between misguided people thinking they’re doing well and actual misandrists, and might also get a more gender neutral law in terms of victims and perpetrators

Being seen as what you are is not a privilege. Nothing earned is a privilege.
So being seen as more competent, when you are more competent, is not a privilege. Nor is being seen as less violent, if you are less violent.
