All over social media this morning, the movie industry is congratulating itself on having awarded a film directed by a Chinese woman the Oscar for best picture. A couple of observations about this achievement.

First, nobody watches the fucking show. The ratings are absolutely in the tank, and this was true before COVID. The 2020 Oscars had a drop of 20% from the year before. Nobody gives a shit about the award.

Second, and this is mind-blowing, almost nobody actually watched the film that got the award. Called Nomadland, the fucking movie took in $5 million at the box office. That's it. It's ranked something like 7,500th on the earnings list.

The #1 movie, during a remarkably bad year for films, did something like 100 times that much, and starred Will Smith. Whose wife and family are busy publicly embarassing.

What a shit show.
