I have all that and people could still care less about me. $8k dental work, $5k nose job, and a year in the gym... suddenly people "care" about me. Guys care that I might get that girl they want. Gals care that some other gal might get me.

I checked out of the whole Western world back in 2005 and lived a great life. I came back in 2010 and had a miserable life so I just worked on amassing a fortune so I could leave again. That time is coming in September. Just realize: it's not you, it's them.

Dude just stop caring what others think of you and you’ll be better off. I literally don’t care. I used to be the one who got the expensive shoes and clothes and acted differently in front of people but I now hate being fake. I don’t care what others think of me and I’m not going to pretend to be something I’m not.

It's a part of our biological structure that requires us to care for other people's opinion.

In the early evolution, if you didn't stick with the group and went along, you were likely to be left behind; no one would come to save you. Only those individuals who cared others' opinions and acted along, did survive. Over time, this trend was engraved within our DNA.

People only care about you when you have resource is because you're a valuable asset now. If they can get within your inner circle, then the expectation is, your resource will help them as well. At a societal level, society wants those who can solve problems, who can amass resources.

The solution is, to me, is to develop a good sense of good and bad/evil and value structure. Then, you can depend on your self-validation. At that point, it's mostly about being indifferent to what others think.

Six decades here and I currently own fewer possessions than I have had since college. I also have the cheapest car since a 1980's GTI. One dresser and one closet of clothes. And I am happier and more at peace than ever. All that crap doesn't matter - simplify, offload, and kill/avoid debt. Enjoy watching the sun rise and set, it's a beautiful world.

So many people are on a hamster wheel to nowhere. I know, I was one of them for decades...

Sail around the world, or collect rose varieties.. doent matter, as long is its what you day dream of doing...

Car, money, clothes? Thats superficial stuff for shallow people.

Its not about them, its about you, one shot at life, good or evil, thats all you get, it aint a trial run.

And theres no shortage of people being "normal", what we have shortages of, are originality and freedom.

How much should we value the validation and opinions of people who are only impressed by material wealth?

How much should we value the validation from people who are impressed by virtues of personality? Integrity, courage, honesty, and the like.

And lastly, how much should we value our own self-validation, where we measure ourselves against the ideal version of what we envisage ourselves as, and encourage ourselves on the constant journey towards that goal?

Honestly? Long term point in life does not exist. We live, we die, we get forgotten. All is washed away by time and all is pointless at the end.

Short term though. So far I found out that it's finding yourself, your hobbies and learning to entertain yourself, get comfortable with yourself and live with yourself.

I'm trying to find purpose of getting friends and having fun but for now, people seem as scums, only rarely you will find the ones you would like..

So, think short term, long term sucks. Be yourself and do what you love

Also, it's worth mentioning that you aren't learning that no one cares about you. What you're learning is, on a broad scale, no one cares about anyone and you're just one of those people.

You meet people all the time that just go overboard in their appearance, showing off possessions, bragging about experiences and other things. This pretension is, for me, comical. In my mind I am thinking 'If you have to prep and preen that much, what is under all that?'

It reminds me of a woman that wears a lot of makeup, hiding the truth. As a man, I am what you see. No bullshit, and you will understand fairly quickly that I do not project a persona that I am not. This is something that people appreciate, or not. The ones that do appreciate honesty, are also honest themselves, hopefully.

If people are disingenuous to themselves, will they be genuine to you?

Women "cared" about me as a kid, because I had a River Phoenix look. I thought they cared about me because I was a good writer, musician and had a good heart. Was wrong. Later on they all "cared" about beta guys with money, who they now live off of. If you are lucky, one or both of your parents care about you. Maybe a sibling. Otherwise, nobody cares. People only care about the value others bring. Famous, attractive, rich, and/or well-connected? A ton of people care since you have something to offer them. Otherwise, no one except close family members and friends care about you as a person (and even then, not everyone is fortunate to have that).

As fair as the question "what's the point?," the point is to love and care for yourself by doing whatever the fuck you want since only you can give a damn about you.

"The point" is an age old question that has spawned hundreds of religions and puzzled philosophers since man first walked the Earth.

Whatever the answer may be, it's certainly not receiving validation from others. You will find that most people are selfish assholes and it is exceptionally rare to find anyone that truly cares about you- double if that person isn't a blood relative.

Maybe look at it this way.

What's the point of my paddleboards and kayaks? Tons of peaceful time out on lakes and rivers in nature.

What's the point of my nice 4x4 truck? I can go anywhere and love that feeling when I'm driving it.

What's the point of being super fit and lean (at 51)? I can go anywhere and do anything physical within the limits of what my body is capable of.

What's the point of having enough wealth to stop working? Work can be rewarding and knowing you can stop makes it even moreso.

All of this is predicated on the fact that these things are meaningful TO ME.

This is the point. People have always wanted something better and they usually need reliable allies and friends to get those things done, we've come a long way with that drive since the invention of agriculture. It's a song and dance that keeps the civilization chugging along.

Good question. I want an answer to it as well. I think at the root of it, if we were to actually be honest, there is no point. You were born, you will die, and what you do in between is pointless. Some people think having kids is the reason, to "continue to species". Of course I think they are all insane. Why would you want to continue this? Why would you want to put another person into this? What is wrong with you?
