I've been lifting for a year. I've made some progress, but less than I expected. I'm not looking for encouragement. I'm looking to you guys for honest and direct feedback that I can use to improve my progress going forward.

Me

  • Upper 40's
  • 5'10"
  • 156 lbs.

Where I Started One Year Ago

  • Life-long skinny fat. Although I somehow thought of myself as being in pretty good shape (denial is a strange thing), I was in fact a formless blob almost totally lacking in muscle tone. Ribs were visible. Muscles were not.

  • No previous lifting experience. Occasional running. 20 years at a desk job.

  • Starting Lifts (all at 3x5): BP = 85; OHP = 55; SQ = 45; DL = 115. Squats were artificially low, of course, but the other lifts were genuinely difficult at these weights.

My Program(s)

  • Started with Starting Strength (i.e., compound lifts, 3 times per week) for one month

  • Added Pull-ups and Curls to the routine for the next month;

  • Switched to PPLPPLR (the version recommended in r/fitness) and have stuck with it for the last ten months. My routine keeps all of the main compound lifts, but supplements with accessory lifts.

  • I recomped (kept weight the same) for the first six months or so, then bulked to 165 for the next four months (looked fat), and have now cut back to 156.

  • Although in theory I should have lifted around 300 days (lifting 6 days per week), I actually only lifted 211 days over the last year. Quite a few skip days for sickness, travel, work. I also ran two half-marathons over the year, which took some days away from lifting.

Where I Am Today

  • Current lifts (all are 5x5): BP = 137.5; OHP = 85; SQ = 175; DL = 210.

  • I would estimate that I've put on about 10 pounds of muscle mass. I weigh slightly more than when I started, but most of the fat has been replaced with muscles, which are now visible on arms, legs and torso.

My Assessment

I think this is pretty weak progress for a year's worth of effort. Possible causes:

  • I'm upper 40's and have neglected my body for most of my life. Maybe this is the best I can reasonably expect for a first year of effort.

  • Not working hard enough. This is tough to gauge. I've never pushed myself to the point of throwing up, for example. OTOH, I frequently push to failure on compound lifts.

  • Not eating enough. This could be the problem -- but it's confusing, because (at least during the time I was bulking) I felt like I put on a lot of fat.

  • Genetics. I have a 30-inch waist, never changes, which is pretty small for my height (5'10"). Maybe I'm just a lean person?

I've checked my ego at the door. If you think I'm not hitting reasonable expectations, I'm ready to hear it, and am looking for suggestions to improve.
