I am asking because the reasons for the gender preference for boys being a major issue is because of its impact - abortions, forced abortions, abandonment, divorcing / abandoning / killing women who give birth to girls etc.

The epidemic of “missing women and girls” is the discussion of how several societies around the world have a clear preference for sons.

To them, a baby boy is the gold standard, whilst a baby daughter would be the runners up prize; and so we see the death, neglect and disappearance of such girls.

The story is an important one, but so too it is incomplete in the usual way… it ignores the other side of the story.

Because yes, in other countries, such a thing as a ‘daughter preference’ exists too, yet is never discussed, and as always, falls through the cracks of compassion and advocacy.

In fact, in a study of 650,000+ women across 50 developing countries, whilst it was found that 17.7% of women did indeed have a son preference… 12.8% had a daughter preference.

That’s a difference of 5%… is that really enough for ‘missing women and girls’ to be a global issue, whilst ‘missing men and boys’ remains something that doesn’t exist, is not discussed, and would likely be laughed and sneered at, if it was?

And we see this not just in child birth, but adoption too – where countless boys (especially black boys) are left behind and looked over, due to the unspoken ‘daughter preference’.

So yes.

What about our missing sons?

Let's not forget that places where boys were preferred were heavily linked with female infanticide. Heavily. There are still regions in India and China where there aren't enough women to marry men, and girls get kidnapped as a result.

A boy preference is often due to girls being considered literal burdens because they are dependent on the family, because there are little opportunities through which they can become independent.

In my country (bangladesh) it is often said that girls are preferred over boys, and if your first child is a girl it means it is good luck for the dad. This is mainly because girls are seen and raised as more obedient and submissive, whereas boys are not (they face less accountability and consequences). A girl holds the reputation of the family and is the pride. But a boy doesn't matter in terms of what he does because in the large part, he can do what he wants. He is less "easy" to control. This is all purely due to cultural norms.

In modern western media, there is a pattern where women say they'd prefer a baby girl and men say they'd prefer a baby boy. This is pretty normal and there are also many who say they don't mind. Now look at the reasons: women say they want girls because they can dress them up, they're cute, they grow up to be kinder. Men say they want baby boys because they don't want a daughter to become promiscuous. The latter being the result of absent and negletful parenting from the father.

Remember that a girl preference is very different to a boy preference in terms of the reason behind each. Whichever one is more ethically messed up, and has caused far more significant long term issues, you be the judge.

A girl preference rarely has directly lead to infanticide and human trafficking.

It was already clear on the media that they give preference to little girls because "they are cuter" so no surprise that 3-4 adopted childs are female. Which is very sad.

This to me sounds like the pendulum swinging in the other direction. For much of the last few decades, boys were highly preferred.

China is a big example of the disparity in preference between boys and girls with their “1 child policy” (which has also blown up in their face. Just look at how they literally have to import women for marriage).

So, it kind of makes sense to me to want more girls now. Give it another generation, or about 2 decades and then it’ll be “we need more boys” again.

I don’t think there is an epidemic of sons being killed in favor of daughters to worry about.

A few psycho feminists trying to rage bait and possibly even mentally ill enough to go through with it… not the same as China killing millions of unborn baby girls during the “one child policy,” or India, where excess baby girls are basically left to die of exposure. It doesn’t make it okay to ever kill a child because of their sex, but just for perspective, the cultures that have a murderous and pathological gender preference as a whole, are not killing boy babies.

A much bigger problem is the xeno-estrogens in the environment, which are harmful to both sexes but especially destroy the virility and viability of males of every species.

It’s also known that in times of stress women have many more daughters (it’s a survival mechanism because any species needs more females to survive and reproduce) and I think that is happening now. I know many families now who naturally had all daughters.

We need many, many more strong, competent, healthy men. We have to stop destroying our men with circumcision, estrogens in the environment, screens/radiation, and herding them into school when they should be running wild, working with their hands, and problem solving.

I have daughters, and I adore them, but I regret that I wasn’t given the opportunity to have a son.

In a post feminist society daughters bring less discomfort to the family compared to sons (prison, NEET bums, Incels, Betas, raising a son with wheels, a trade, skills to be a man) as daughters don't require anything but to be fed and clothed (paraded with pride as eye candy, moneymaker between the legs even if unattractive, if attractive can marry into money).

In an Islamic society that promotes Polygamy for anyone able to feed and clothe multiple females, and is not in a position to Jihad war to acquire booty, or have People of the Book paying the Tax (cash AND giving half of your daughters to the Muslims as concubines, aside from giving half of your sons as Muslim soldiers), having extra daughters is a necessity.

In Iran, part of the reason they are against foreign tourism is that there are Temporary Marriage Brothels on almost every street corner in many cities stocked with females from ages 9 thru 60 for marriages lasting 2 hours to 6 months to teenage boys aged 14 on up to Adult males up to 100+ years old.

Extra females are necessary.

Males lose under both the Feminist and Traditional System.

Under Christian philosophies and Mad Max Materialist survival of the fittest scenarios are men valued and wanted.

Remember the Gillette commercial that was applauded by feminist and most women not long ago. There were also tons of ads on tv, on buses etc that depict men as bumbling idiots who can’t even put on their shoes the right way. Heck right here on Reddit there are many posts by women (and simps who bend over backwards to agree with them) that women are beautiful, God given creatures while men are dirty, violent and despicable. Sad thing is, all things considered it makes sense to have a daughter preference in the west. Girls and women simply live life on an easier difficulty setting compared to males. School designed for your success, more scholarships, affirmative action programs in your favor for academia and corporations regardless of gender divide. Endless women centered programs in give you a leg up. Welfare state exists for your benefit and cares about housing and helping you. Reduced or no sentence for crimes men go to prison for. A dominant political ideology designed to make your preferences and outcomes highest concern. Everyone makes endless excuses for your bad behavior. Lastly, the intersection of everything familiar with society is now bent towards a feminine perspective. It makes sense to want your kid to have an easier and better life. To have a boy today is heartbreaking.

Honestly, I'm a man, and while I wouldn't care about my child's gender, I often fantasize about having a little girl.

For one, I think the world in general is kinder with women, she'll deal with less bullshit and toxic expectations.

Daughter preference is far, far more prevalent because of dowries that the man's family is supposed to purchase the daughter from the parents. A man is only worth to what they bring to the family, a woman's worth is how much dowry they get from a marriage proposal. A woman would bring in more revenue in a dowry than a man would for several years working for the parents or working outside the home to provide for the parents.

I'll get downvoted because nuance and rational thought go by the wayside when we're shitting on feminism here, but it's a fact that we see parents all across the world committing infanticide against female babies in favor of male. It's true. I have a son and I can't help but think how much less stress having a daughter instead would be. Yeah sure you have to make sure she doesn't become a 304, but a female would be ok regardless. She could get a job easier, she could always just get a husband, hell in this country she could even become a single mom and marry the government and be taken care of.

A boy you have to help him succeed because you're the only person that's going to care about him.

One thing to know about this study: It surveyed mostly married and unmarried women, and didn't survey any men of an equivalent marital status.

From what can be learned, is that some of those surveyed women in certain countries, have a slight preference for wanting a daughter over a son. In the remaining countries sampled, there were also son preferences and balanced preferences.

Given these preferences and balances, the study never explained the cultural rationale for the preferences. What is already known is that, in some male-dominated countries, it's no surprise there's a preference for sons, as they will always have it easier to have many options for success, in comparison to a daughter. Since the son will be able to always have more options for success than the daughter, it's important for a family to be able to know that their children's options for success, ensure the future financial success of the family. In those countries with a daughter preference, maybe it has to do with being able to find success in female-dominated professions, like nursing, as many foreign countries are often looking towards them for a supply of low-cost labor to staff their hospitals and clinics?

I've heard people genuinely say "You can try again" when having a son. I know two who had 4 Sons and went on just to get a daughter. She finally did at 42 and the daughter has a slight disability and poor eyesight.
