It's just so damn lonely and empty being a man. I feel invisible as a human being and nothing more than a bank account or a "bro" to go drink with.

I read recently about how women maintain their friendships by talking and keeping in contact constantly to maintain a friendship while men build and maintain friendships by doing activities together (sports, drinking, poker, video games, hunting, projects, etc). I feel so limited by this system when trying to make deeper connections with other men. Sure sometimes of course it's nice to hangout with the boys but I've struggled practically my whole life to find any deep friendships.

I can't think of a single guy "friend" I've had that I could open up to about any of my deeper feelings or problems without them all just saying some variation of: Just be confident, workout more, be a man, go to therapy, dude you're killing the vibe, forget about it, just drink/smoke it away, or just obvious awkwardness+disgust that a man was trying to open up and so they slowly stopped hanging out with me. Having male friend groups always seems to peak at hanging out for a while drinking or watching sports on the weekends then slowly drifting apart as guys move away or get busy. Meanwhile women can do activities together but it's also totally normal to talk for hours to deeply know eachother and eachother's problems. They'll stay in continuous contact for years on the phone with friends that moved away. Maybe I don't need it to that same level, but I wish I had a few male friends to support me, spend quality time with that didn't revolve around some weekend activity, and to not just dismiss me.

I remember my own father constantly telling me to "Man up. Be a man. Toughen up men don't cry". I don't remember exactly when it happened but I guess like all men I subconsciously absorbed that. I feel so sick inside because I want nothing more than to cry sometimes at how alone I feel but I physically can't. I just want to sob but I can't because of that conditioning I guess. Even if I could, everyone would just look at me with disgust. Why are we not allowed to express our feelings?
