Many stem fields are very meritocratic.

They focus on results. Results are based upon skill, dedication, and hours worked towards the desired goal. Advanced math, and science do not require that you have a penis between your legs.

Many programmers tend to work much more than 40 hours a week, and this will help them meet deadlines, and get ahead in the competitive culture. Being able to have accomplishments in your field will also help you when applying for other jobs.

Personal anecdotes do not really matter in a meritocracy.

Meanwhile, as a straight white guy, I haven't heard anything positive in the job market for months now. Several companies have told me that I'm not able to help their diversity quota so I can't get an interview. But yea I'm sure it's part of my privilege.

There was that paper posted here a few weeks ago that claimed to have found gender bias against women in Open Source. That gender bias ammounted to 1 in 500 women contributing to open source will ever face discrimination. This finding has now been spun up to "STRONG bias against women in Open Source"

Reading this article, I'm unsure if it was bad science producing bad results. If it was Misinterpretation of good results by the programer. Or if it was media spin on a reasonable interpretation of good results.

Companies are profit driven. If they could hire employees that do the same quality of work for a cheaper salary they would do so.

No company is going to give an employee thousands of dollar more than the market value of their skills because they have certain genitals or are attracted to certain people.

I wish all this nonsense were true. I have never worked at a job where I got extra money for being a man or being attracted to women but I wouldn't complain if the boss gave me a raise for that reason.

lol so I am actually probably as qualified and as experienced as the "scientist" and did similar work but on real world issues using real techniques, i would love to critique this work because I bet immediately I could refute it in 1 easy step.

Simply using a heuristic model calling on Bayesian probability, you can explain the "Big data" trends outright.

or put simply making a very simplistic simulation where men and women are completely equal in probability of receiving a job and gender is in no way a factor, but the probability of a women deciding to take a career break or being a housewife/homemaker is higher, you would see the exact same result.

There is no gender bias, its complete horseshit, what this dopey cunt is doing is effectively the same as looking at lottery winners and claiming the fact that 90% of winners are men as proof that the lottery is sexist, and claiming women therefore have it harder, and completely and utterly ignoring how many tickets are sold by gender, and ignoring the fact that the majority of all losers are also men, and there is no barrier for men or women to buy a lottery ticket its entirely at their personal choice/preference.

the difference in "Big data" is more driven by individual lifestyle choices that people are completely free to make such as what they study or what work/life balance makes them comfortable.

This is one of those can't see the forest for the trees situations. If her data is good, and her analyses of that data are sound, then she can sell that data to the highest bidder who will use it to recruit cheaper employees (women, left handed pygmies, LGBTXYZ whatevers) because..... her data claims they are cheap and hence a great bargain.

So you have to ask yourself why there isn't a big line to either buy her stuff or hire her to replicate it?
