So, women's shelter are now going to accept men? Are family shelters going to start accepting men with kids?

I was temporarily homeless with kids and was refused by "family" centers. My kids could spend the night, but I would have to sleep outside due to security/safety concerns. I couldn't bring my kids to men's shelters for the same reason.

I'll believe equality for all when I see it.

whether we think the ERA is a good idea or not, relevant in 2019 or not, I'm extremely concerned aobut the number of legislators that are totally willing to sidestep the Constitutional Amendment process to shove through this feel good amendment.

The deadline for ratification expired 40 years ago. Changing the legal rules for a constitutional amendment after the fact is not the way to do this, it undermines and damages the credibility of the entire constitutional process.

If we want to pass the ERA, it needs to be started over from scratch.

It's unlikely to make any real difference, although it's worth noting that Feminists opposed the ERA after it was outed that women may lose legal privileges as a result. Never underestimate societies ability to twist the rules to benefit women.

I’m struggling to think of a situation where the government disadvantages women over men. For some reason they’re pushing this as a women’s right issue, but I think it’s more likely going to lead to lawsuits challenging the male only draft, higher sentencing for men over women for the same crimes, men receiving less child custody, men ordered to pay more alimony, the deluth model of domestic violence, reproductive rights for men, the definition of rape acknowledging when men are forced to have sex, and women only welfare programs.

In every way the government treats men and women differently, women are advantaged. Does anyone know why women’s rights advocates are pressing for this? Oliver mentions the expiration of the Violence Against Women Act, but that also advantages women and wouldn’t that be expressly unconstitutional under the ERA? What is their endgame or are they living in some victimhood fantasy?

I think a lot are overestimating what could actually be done with this amendment to target men. Everyone would have to sign up for the draft, everyone could get equal maternity/paternity leave and everyone would have an equal chance of gaining custody, but only if men who are discriminated against sue and show without a shadow of a doubt the double standards and biases waged against men. Progress still needs to be made for both sexes and it at least paves the way for that to happen.

I like John Oliver except for when he talks about women's rights.

He REALLY stretches the truth when talking about women's rights and is always quick to point out how it is bad for women, i.e in that episode he talks about women not getting the right to vote and how it should have been a no brainer for them to be able to vote. But he failed go mention how women did not want to vote because that would mean that they had to sign up for the draft, so they refused those rights.

He does that on a lot of things but I find that it's far worse for women's rights stuff because he knows that no one is stupid enough to challenge someone on anything related to women's rights.
