When I served in the Navy, we had a cat onboard, but the officers were not happy with that, and several times ordered sailors to put the cat ashore.

Which they did, of course. They were, however, never explicitly ordered to see to it that she didn't just walk straight back on board.

She was with us for as long as I served on that ship, and having her select you and your bunk as her sleeping spot for the night was a high honor giving you bragging rights the next day.

The POWs at the Philippine camp Cabanatuan during WW2 had a bulldog named Socho (I think) who was given a silk pillow to lie on while the prisoners performed skits and musical numbers. It was well understood what those Marines who took care of that dog would do if anyone tried to eat him, and this is a camp run by the Japanese who weren’t exactly forthright with feeding prisoners. Men have sentimental feelings.

This post is quite lovely, actually. It is lovely to see these men being comradely, especially since men who are combatants are always pigeonholed by society as these aggressive beasts who can't control themselves being physically violent with each other, with women, with children, and with others of other genders.

Soldiers who worked within the ship's hull died in some of the most horrible ways. They often got trapped within the wreckages of the hull or burned inside. I remember reading an article where some seaman stated that they remembered screams and hittings on the hull resonating from the outside.

Often times these men died with no knowledge of the cause of their deaths. And their bodies unsalvageable from wreckages.

I remember a lot of pictures like that from pretty much every side in that war. For example, german soldiers also taking care of animals, a picture that is also seldom shown (maybe even more here because "they were the nazis") but it's always accurate to point nonetheless.

People are only nice to cats because they are cute and have soft fur.

They are little whores who prostitute themselves for food and other luxuries.

Don't get me wrong: I love them and I fully participate, too. It's relaxing and soothing to pet the little fuzzballs.

But if the Queen of Sheba, here, had the same soul and personality but in the body of an armadillo or a tortoise, she surely would not be the object of worship sitting on the royal throne as she is in the picture shown.
