I mean, I had sex with a 18 year old when I was 17. That's pretty normal, IMO. People want to push their morality on you, but I was more than capable of making the decision to have sex at 17, probably 16 too. Everyone is different. I see no reason why I couldn't have had sex with a 30 year old woman when I was 16 if I wanted to. This isn't really a gender issue, it's an issue with assuming people who are under 18 aren't capable of making rational decisions and whoever is involved with them is a terrible person. People talk a lot about "protecting" minors, how about protecting their freedom to choose? It's just another way government thought polices humanity. Putting arbitrary rules in place that only protect their idea of right and wrong. Stupid. You can die for your country before you can drink alcohol in America.

Statutory rape isn't real rape. I mean, the age of consent laws in America make no sense. You can sleep with a girl on her 16th birthday in one state but if you cross that imaginary line over there you're a felon and have to register as a sex offender? I know the various states have their own laws but for some things it's pretty standard. Alcohol and tobacco ages, for example.

Which leads me to ponder a possible situation arising where a house is on the state line. Bedroom sex is a felony so you're going to have to keep this shit in the living room where it's good and legal...

All and all it doesn't matter. In today's world men are ALWAYS rapists, no matter how old the girl/woman is.

pedophilia requires a prepubescent victim

Some self referencing advice might need to be taken. While in layman terms, pedophilia is used to describe actual child molestation, the correct usage of the word describes an attraction and not the action. As such, you usage of pedophilia is as correct as those who use it to refer to any illegal underage sexual activity.

So, let's get started on some terms.

Pedophilia - sexual attraction to prepubescent children, normally 12 and under. There is some issues here when one considers the sexual attraction to a prepubescent adult (rare, but they do exist). Currently pedophilia is listed as a paraphilia, but this is because paraphilias are defined to include sexual attraction to children. In other words, it is listed as one not because of scientific reasoning (to do this, we would need a scientific determination on what constitutes a sexual orientation vs. what constitutes a paraphilia, and then we would need to look at the evidence presented by reputable studies). Of course, confusing this whole thing is that media and even in some cases scientist and other officials will use the word pedophilia to describe the action of child molestation.

Hebephilia - attraction to pubescent children. Currently planned to combined with pedophilia in the DSM-V, but this has come under heavy criticism. Basically most issues with pedophilia apply.

Ephebophilia - attraction to post-pubescent children. This is extremely complex because this is almost fully a socially defined stage of being that is very recent. In the past, post-puberty meant you were an adult. This term is in part legally defined, and thus subject to even greater criticisms than the others.

Child molestation - having illegal sex with a child under the age of consent. Key word illegal. Why? Well, first you have Romeo and Juliet laws. But something most people don't realize is that in many places, including some US states, it is possible to marry a child, and it is possible for that child to legally have sex with their spouse, even if it would otherwise be illegal. I will admit this is very rare to occur, but has happened. Look up the girl 'Samantha Lott' who was married in ~2009 to an adult, even though she was only 13 years old.

Statutory rape - a layman term used to describe the group of criminal charges involved when two people have sex and one is too young. Sometimes it is used to describe only consensual sex, other times it is used to describe situations that, even had both parties been 18+, would have still been rape.

Finally, there is currently, to my knowledge, no term to describe legal sex between an adult and a child below the age of consent.

tl;dr The terminology around this is vastly complex and not well defined. It is best for anyone who is having a serious discussion involving these terms to give some context as to what meaning they are aiming for.

I had sex with a 17 year old when I was 21, we were in a long term relationship after that for a few years, I got sick of dealing with moody entitled bullshit from her and found a woman my own age. The difference was amazing. I'm much older now and I am married to the woman I met who was my own age. I obviously don't consider my self a pedophile, however in the state we were in I would have been convicted of statutory rape and still had to have registered as a sex offender and been lumped in with the baby rapers. I think the law is pretty stupid. When I see a couple that is like 17 and 38 I'm like really? I think it is stupid on both parts but I'm not going to judge someone, when it's like 16 and 38 my own morality kicks in what a difference a year makes huh?

Thank you - we Catholics are tired of explaining this to people. Most victims of the "pedophilia" scandal were post-pubertal. (And male, but that's for another subreddit.)

Yeah. It's a pain in the ass, but I doubt people are going to start getting their facts straight. "Pedophile" is just a catch-all term these days.

What ever the dictionary definition is, the word pedophilia now has a more general meaning in the public domain. Get used to it cause it's not going to change.

Honestly, I hate the term statutory "rape". If the individual is under the age of consent, then yes, it's wrong (from a legal perspective). But, if they were a willing participant, it was not "rape". Sure there may have been some level of manipulation, but that's a grey area at best. If there was no violent/psychological/forceful coersion, I don't consider it rape.

Can't we just call it unlawful sex with a person under the age of consent?
