This is how we treated so many women 100 years ago, turning their externalised shows of distress, into a made up pseudoscientific bogus term of ‘female hysteria’.

An abused women with a trauma response? Hysterical.

A neglected wife finally snapping back? Hysterical.

A woman addicted to an opiate? Hysterical.

A woman in poverty, in desperate need of help? Hysterical.

We victim blamed them. Subjecting these women to awful, humiliating, and scientifically bunkum ‘treatments’ to exorcise them of their ‘hysteria’.

We combined and contorted various issues, turning women’s experiences into a monolithic blob, that both internalised and stigmatised their pain.

…Sound familiar yet?

Because ‘female hysteria’ seems awfully similar to ‘toxic masculinity’, which also puts all the blame in the wrong places, or as Professor Heidi Matthews puts it, ‘excludes the material conditions that produce and encourage dysfunctional performances of masculinity themselves.’

A bullied boy, finally fighting back? Toxic.

An abused man, acting out his trauma? Toxic.

An addicted, or mentally unwell man? Toxic.

A man conditioned never to express pain? Toxic.

Round and round we go, but this time the whip is in the other hand, and brandished by fools so enamoured by themselves, and too virtuous, that they’ll never realise they’ve become the villain.

So is ‘toxic masculinity’ the modern equivalent of ‘female hysteria’?

Felt "triggered" just some hours ago when some random guy on Reddit praised some celebrity that he was showing emotion when most of the people in the same field (football player) wouldn't because of "toxic masculinity"

I hate that term with all my guts. I used to be so expressive and I literally got punished for being that, and now people are saying it's toxic to adopt coping mechanisms in order to protect myself.

Toxic masculinity falls under the same category as unconscious bias. They were concepts and tools that were developed in order to analyze very specific areas of very specific parts of society. Once out of context, they cannot tell you anything meaningful. And have been appropriated by radicals to wreak havoc on the social fabric of our society. It takes decades to heal from what has been done by feminists and their ridiculous term “toxic masculinity.”

I think men are treated the same. I think the bottom line is that people in general do not want to deal with other peoples issues. If at all possible they will take the path of least resistance and dismiss it, and if necessary the person too.

Mostly only someone who really cares about you and your well being will take the time.

What was originally "toxic masculinity" is still a very real problem that's affecting many people, but the word no longer describes it, as its meaning changed from "the social and cultural norms surrounding masculinity create a toxic environment for men" to "masculinity is bad", and therefore lost any value it had

Nobody is saying masculinity itself is toxic. Thats like the exact opposite of the concept. Maybe at least read the wikipedia article of toxic masculinity and its origin.

Female hysteria is real. Toxic masculinity is real. Both problems contribute to these problems. There is no need to prove the existence of one and disprove the existence of another.
