"Why don't you join"?

"I don't support ISIS."

"Oh, so you hate Muslims."

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points42 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why don't you join?

Because I think genocide is an atrocity.

Oh, so you're against a great and prosperous Germany.

Like that would ever work against a feminist. They're fucking insane. No amount of reason has ever penetrated the third wave mindset.

What gets me is how that is worded as a statement rather than a question. I can imagine it would continue like this.

"No I don't.

"Yes you do."

"Fuck off."

*See, you obviously hate women."

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That kind of crap is basically intended to goad you into giving the response they want, you're better off just walking away because they've already made their minds up about you the second you came into contact with them.

Their favorite go to. That one and my favorite "Oh so you hate women?" as if you can remotely deduce that from a statement as simple as "I'm not a feminist."

[–]_olas 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My favorite part about saying you're not a feminist, and someone replying "oh, you hate women?" is that feminism pretends to be about equality. So, not being a feminist should be about hating everybody. I feel like that's the shortest way to out feminism as not actually being about equality.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points50 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Posted about this before. Feminism has two definitions, even in a lot of dictionaries, for this very reason. Its "equality between the sexes" when they're trying to badger someone into accepting the feminist label or shame them for being critical of feminism. Its "equality for women" when talking about specific issues or when someone asks why they aren't doing anything about problems men face.

And if you question them on this point, then its about "dismantling patriarchy" or some other such nonsense. They'll talk about how the problems men face are really the result of misogyny/patriarchy, and how focusing on women will magically fix mens problems.

For instance, they will often frame the problem of discrimination against fathers in child custody cases as a result of the "mothers as default caregivers" attitude, which they claim is an artifact of patriarchy. Even though fathers used to be the default custodian under the law, and it was feminists who fought to change this (see: The Tender Years Doctrine).

(This is what I mean when I say feminism is just codified gynocentrism. It is simply the doctrine which attempts to force 100% of resources and attention on women and women's interests.)

So when someone in the real world (i.e., not on the internet) asks me why I'm not a feminist, I usually just say "because its not a well-defined term".

[–]SupremeAuthority 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just flip it around: do you believe in equality?

"Of course!"

Well then you're an MRA.

"(Sputtering rage)"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't classify myself as anything, I just believe in equality and find the mensrights issues/forums more important and non-toxic.

[–]TommyyyGunsss 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get "silly me for believing that women should be equal"

[–]Sasha_ 33 points34 points35 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I always say "If you live longer, you're probably not oppressed."

They never have an answer.

[–]somejackarse 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I find that retort to be just as stupid.

Lifespan is not an oppression/privilege index, and with no proof and the science still out there, you can look all over the place and find a million possible causes that have nothing to do with an unfair institutional advantage granted to women by society to explain the phenomenon - including biology.

[–]Sasha_ 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nonsense.

Life-expectancy is, granted, a crude measure, but it certainly IS a key indicator. Let's be straightforward here - men die younger because men have harder lives. We experience more stress, do more strenuous and demanding jobs, commute longer hours, comprise 95% of workplace deaths and injuries, we're the majority of suicides and are more likely to be denied our children after divorce - itself a massive driver of suicide.

To add insult to injury men are also told we 'fake' illnesses like 'man-flu' - women go to there doctor 3x as much as men do. Result? We're more likely to die of heart failure, cancer etc.

So when I'm told "women have it tougher" you'll excuse me if I think that's fucking rubbish. I can't think of any example of the 'oppressed' outliving the 'oppressors', can you? I can't think of any example where the 'oppressed' got to put there feet-up at home while the 'oppressors' went off to war to be blown to bits to defend them.

Yep. However you cut it, women have easier lives than men do. No question.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I always thought men died earlier because we wanted to as a way to get out from under.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The way I see it, the other person isn't looking for anything beyond an "agree to disagree" or "you're right"

If they won't have an intelligent conversation, why try to force it?

[–]mwobuddy 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bullshit. If you're oppressed, your lifespan is shorter. Slaves didn't live as long as their masters, in the old days.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"No, but if they keep equating non-activism with hatred, I might start"

[–]Millenia0 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Say you're egaliterian and when she tries to strawman it, stop her.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"No. I just don't believe women are more equal than men."

[–]Yerfacemate 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

As a man what would be so wrong is answering yes to that? Sure I think men are better why not. I don't have experience of being a woman to judge otherwise. I quite enjoy being a man aswell.

Of course though I'm speaking tongue in cheek here but what would actually be so bad if some people felt that way.

[–]ventixi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

People are allowed to have prejudice. It's not wrong as in it's illegal or people should be you up over it, but people can definitely judge you for it, and if you act on it (eg. in the capacity of an employer) you can get discrimination charges.

Personally I judge people based on a lot of stereotypes and if I'm vocal about them I'm pretty sure I'll have a lot of people angry at me and it would not be a smart thing to do. But those initial judgements are really just placeholders since I don't know the person so all I have are generalizations and what I was told/experienced. I'm very aware of how inaccurate the generalizations can be and very open to be proven wrong.

[–]Yerfacemate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes I realised about the discrimination part but I literally mean in context like this where seemingly an acquaintance is asking you a question. I'm also more likely to just reply yes to fuck with her for putting the question to me like that in the first place.

I have one of these feminists in my life right now who told me to check my male privelage recently. She lives in a bubble it seems

[–]ventixi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing wrong with having an opinion. Although I like to watch what I say cuz I'm paranoid of things coming back to bite me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

So, has the definition of feminism changed? I have always been taught that it means men and women are inherently equal.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The definition of feminism as defined by feminists? No, but it doesn't actually match up outside of feminist circles. Now, if feminists were marching in the street in recognition of the vast majority of homeless people being men, or recognition of high suicide rates for men, or recognition of any male victims of domestic violence or sexual violence, it might be a legitimate definition. If established feminist groups were pushing for laws and procedures that might actually help men in places where they seriously need it, maybe even to fix issues that feminism itself caused, it might be a legitimate definition.

That's not the world we live in though, so no, but your definition is demonstrably wrong so it's irrelevant.

[–]marswithrings 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

even if that was the definition of feminism, that logical leap is still fallacious. feminism certainly can not and certainly does not have a monopoly on the concept of equality, so you can believe in equality without identifying as a feminist.

it's completely unfair to assume someone who is not a feminist is opposed to equality, thats some cult-level "us vs. them" mentality going on there. someone truly fighting for equality should care more about equality itself and less about what label you use to describe it

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Then why wouldnt you be feminist if you believe men and women are inherently equal? Your retort opens more doors than it closes.

If you are genuinely saying this as a belief, feminism has never been about equality. Women have equal or superior rights to men, while having far less responsibilities. They are not drafted, or forced to sign up for it at 18, they are not equal rates of combat deaths, they are not even imprisoned for equal lengths of time as males. When males commit a crime, its because they're evil and go to prison for 20 years. When females commit a crime, its because they're mentally ill and get off on a light sentence or even no jail time at all.

If you believe feminism is about equality, where are feminists crying out for longer prison sentences for equally evil women doing equal criminal acts as men? Show me one feminist article in the history of Feminism which asks for longer sentences for women, or shorter sentences for men. Show me one. Go ahead and look. You won't find it, because feminism is about having all the good for women and none of the bad for women. That is not equality.

Same for my argument, if a self proclaimed feminist doesnt consider male rights he/she isnt a feminist.

[–]InDaBauhaus -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It only has unlucky name, but feminism means women and men are equal.

It is obviously stupid to assume that not being a feminist means 'men > women' and not consider 'women > men'.

Edit: Correct way to word the message would be: 'So you think men are better than women or women are better than men'

Every sane good person is a feminist, but many are not happy with naming it feminism, because it is not fair, it is just historical name.
