Horrifying. Especially given the increasingly dismal state of boys in our culture.

Cant imagine the garbage and propaganda that journalist writes for Huffpost UK.
[–]RobochanAdmin 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yep, this woman is so high up on her horse that she can't see the ground anymore. Men are forced to pay for a woman's pleasure, can't win in court, and called bigotted when we point out their hypocrisy. They know they lost the genetic lottery and are by nature weak, so they have to justify it and get back at us for being better than them.

How about you try raising him as an independent person to determine his own path?
[–][deleted] 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The same goes for the poor daughter who is shoe-horned into a path of 'being a strong woman' rather than being compassionate and caring, if that's her desire.
[–]TheJazzProphet 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, god forbid a girl doesn't want to be "strong". This social engineering needs to stop. Girls who want to be strong will be whether their parents want to or not, and it doesn't really seem to be something their parents can foster in them. What we need to do is get back to teaching boys how to be men and how to create and maintain society, because if we don't, society will certainly collapse.
[–]ExpendableOne 42 points43 points44 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Basically, "how to teach your son he's a monstrous piece of shit for having a penis based on an entirely fabricated and unrealistic set of privileges that she wrongfully believes men benefit from". Also, arguably, child abuse.

[–]KingRobotPrince 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well, of course, knowing that you are privileged by being a man means you will make life better for women. You'll close the wage gap, end violence against women, and hopefully find a nice feminist woman to marry and forever apologise to.

Oh yes I understand my.male privilege, I just love my privilege of having to do most of the heavy lifting at work despite having chronic joint pain (all joints) because that box of paper is "too heavy" or they don't want to put in the effort of moving an empty wood pallet.
I love my male privilege of only being worth what's in my wallet to the majority of our species. I love my male privilege of having the weakest position in a romantic relationship given how society, the courts, government, domestic shelters, and workplaces treat men compared to women.
I love how if I have consentual sex with a woman she can decide days later she regrets it and I can have the police show up at my door with an arrest warrant.
Male privilege sure is swell.

Most parents want to raise their kids so that they are successful in life. Why raise a kid so that he's scared of himself? How can he ever succeed if everything he does, he has to second-guess himself? He'll never have confidence, and the sooner he leaves this crap-spewing "mom", the sooner he can start healing and learning to be a strong man.
I wonder how many of these feminist women are actually attracted to a man that is always 'aware' of his privilege. If confidence is a huge part of attraction, do they swoon when a guy apologizes for merely being a guy? Seems like this mom is raising a future nice guy, and the odds that she pushes him into being a transwoman seems way higher than normal.

[–]armaadi 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I think they do, yeah.
[+]olatundew -8 points-7 points-6 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I know a lot of feminists, and none have ever asked me to apologise for being a man. And I never have (unless this has taken place on some kind of politically symbolic level I'm not aware of). It doesn't seem to have prevented me having feminist friends / colleagues / girlfriends / family. Quite the opposite - I volunteer with kids, and have had many strongly positive responses from feminist mums who value a strong male role model for their child.
I'm not saying that there aren't feminists out there with that attitude - but it's certainly not been my experience. Hopefully it doesn't have to be the totality of yours.
[–]armaadi 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Do all your friends believe in the patriarchy? Do they think toxic masculinity, mansplaining and manspreading are a thing? They aren't overtly telling men to apologize for being men, but they are telling men that they are the problem. They are telling men that only feminism is the answer, and the only way to get to true equality, is to repent and declare themselves feminists. Again, they won't overtly say this, or hell, they might overtly say it. Ask them if the only way to true equality is through feminism. I bet they'll say yes.
So, yes, your feminist friends want you to stop being the wrong kind of man and start being the right kind of man. Since you were wrong, you'll need to apologize for that. To me, nothing says this more clearly than the white male privilege propaganda.
[+]olatundew -8 points-7 points-6 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
No, no, no, no and no.
Have you ever actually spoken to a feminist, face to face? You realise that people writing articles, making YouTube videos, etc, have an incentive to sensationalise and force people to pick 'us or them'?
[–]armaadi 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, my sister is one, and I've had conversations with feminists on /r/feminism and /r/askfeminists and even on Facebook.
If you call them out on it, they do exactly what you are doing. "They aren't real feminists. Real feminists don't do that. They are way better than that." The faces of the feminist movement, both in publicity and in power say and act like I described it. Down with patriarchy and even though it's vaguely identified, everything that goes with it. The only real equality movement is feminism.
If you don't believe me, see how they act towards MRAs or how they reference MRAs with such disdain. See how they push agendas that only benefit women, and specifically hurt things that benefit men....even that thing also benefits women.
Feminism is only about making women equal to men in areas women feel they aren't equal to men. It is not about giving everyone equal opportunity.
Imo, your friends that are for true equality aren't the real feminists. They are the silent minority, and they should put as much distance between them and the feminist movement as they can.

Wouldn't the "equality" angle be to raise both kids in the same way?
If you raise one kid with the aim of making them strong and the other with the aim of making them aware that they have some sort of privilege which, presumably, they should view as being negative, you're going to end up with one messed up little boy.
Pushing crackpot ideologies in children is verging on abusive.

Honestly, I don't expect anything more or less from the Huffington Post. They seem to attract all sorts of people delusional enough to deduce boys as "less". A boy born today is already behind. Boys under perform in education at every age group. They are less likely to attend university, which leads to higher rates of homelessness and unemployment. Discrimination of men has been legalized in employment, and the education system has an anti male bias from the beginning.

Well they can all be happy when China becomes the dominant power, its coming the west is falling apart and China is getting richer and richer year on year. The Chinese don't dick around like the west has since the 60's, they show little tolerance for people being "alternative lifestyle" and will throw people on to hard prison/labour at the blink of an eye. Isn't a mother's disdain for her son a major contributing factor in the creation of serial killers?
Teaching your son to hate himself for being male seems like an appropriate analogue.
[–]elebrin 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sounds like a great way to raise a son such that, in 20 years, you are asking "I wonder why he never talks to me..."
[–]PeterCornswalled 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Or one who wonders why no woman wants anything to do with him.
I remember in my elementary school, we always had more girls than boys in the class. Except for one year, where we had something like 11 boys and 10 girls. Normally, when there were more girls, nobody said anything. But that one year, the teacher (who was female) told us every single day to be extra nice to the girls because there were less of them.
This was seen as completely normal and agreeable by the parents. After all, the mean boys outnumbered the girls and could harm them. We were 5 years old.
There are a fuckton of examples from my childhood like this but this one comes to mind right now.
[–]toyz-z 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Statistics, and every serial killer ever, shows that women cannot raise male children alone
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My mother did. I was an only child, and let me tell you, aside from caring for her schizophrenia, and being the emotional support beam for every boyfriend that left her, along with talking her down from suicide at age 11, barely finishing high school, and watching every child support check pay for wine and tequila while my unemployed mother sat at home each day, I feel pity for her.
I raised myself and I taught myself how to be a man through bitter trial and error.
My aunts supposedly joked when I was an infant that I would end up as a serial killer. But I didn't.
Be glad it's in the Facebook adds with the rest od the garbage

I'm curious - are you arguing that a) male privilege doesn't exist, b) it does exist but doesn't matter / is a good thing, or c) it does exist and is a problem, but parents shouldn't teach their children about it?
[–]bufedad 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
male privilege doesn't exist. There's never been proof that it does. There is proof that it doesn't.
So... well go with the evidence. That's how intelligent people work.
[–]olatundew -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Is that proof that male privilege doesn't exist? It's proof that men are disadvantaged in those specific ways; what if there are other examples where women are disavdantaged?
[–]bufedad 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes it's proof that male privilege doesn't exist.
Do you have evidence that it does?
[–]Aivias 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Can you be more coherent?
[–]olatundew 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
So if you quote 4 statistics showing men have it bad, and a feminists retorts with 5 statistics showing women have it worse, what does that prove? Does it come down to simply comparing who has it worse?
I'm trying to follow your argument. You made quite a strong claim - to prove that something doesn't exist requires significant proof. How do these statistics prove that male privilege doesn't exist?
Do you reject any notion of 'privilege' as a tool of socio-political analysis - or just male privilege specifically? In other words, are you arguing that women are actually privileged, not men - or are you saying that there's no such thing as privilege full stop? I'm just trying to get where you're coming from.
[–]The__Tren__Train 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
women are actually privileged. all one needs to do is look at sentencing statistics and corporate hiring practices... and family court outcomes
[–]Aivias 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You should check usernames before posting.
But your incorrectly characterising this as a vs argument when it isnt, MRAs acknowledge legitimate feminist grievances provided they are not social issues, we dont give a shit if you're upset the female nipple is sexualised, we care then men cant seem to stop killing themselves yet we only see news articles complaining about self harm in teen girls.
TO compare the feminist lobby to MRAs is like comparing Belgium to the USA in terms of spending.
[–]olatundew 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, my bad - new to reddit, finding this time limit on posts very awkward.
If you look at my prior comments, you'll notice I haven't really taken any position or made any such generalisations (except in one example sharing my personal experience). All I've done is ask a few questions, and several people seem to have jumped to conclusions about my views. I think that's pretty poor form when you want to promote an agenda but jump down people's throats for asking questions. Furthermore, I think you'd be surprised by how much we would probably agree on.
However - I don't agree with everything you've said. Belgian spending is still important if you're Belgian.
[–]faposaure 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You're right about that, you can't compare based on one way statistics. The problem is that these statistics are ignored.
Men and women both have serious issues that need to be taken care of. IMO, men are disadvantaged in the fact that we don't listen to them, while women have all the attention and the malevolent ones (or ignorant ones, or biased ones) take advantage of it. (See falls rape accusations, ignored mysandry, manipulations of statistics as wages gap, different sentences for the same crimes, etc..)
[–]olatundew 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I agree that there are issues facing both men and women, and I agree that we're not addressing the issues facing men. I wouldn't go so far as agreeing that men are disavdantaged more than women because (a) it depends how wide you cast your net - i.e. do we include women in Saudi Arabia, (b) I don't see the point of comparing disadvantage. It risks minimising or denigrating the suffering of one group, without alleviating or addressing any of the suffering of either group.
[–]faposaure 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You're right about the scope. Now I can't say anything about Saudi Arabia, appart from what we can hear in the media. I live in Europe, and here I really have the feeling men are disadvantaged. I'm part of the middle class, so there could be a problem of scope here too. I'm not a specialist and I try to be objective about the topic. But in the end, I can only realy talk about my point of view. Even with that in mind, I still feel men have it worse (at least in western countries).
Now, about comparing the disadvantage. That's where I can't agree. In this particular case, the fact that we ignore men's issues most of the time makes people think that men have it easy. Over exposing women issues also leads to abuse, especially when you have extrem people manipulating stats (thing like wages gap, rape figures...). These "studies" and expositions feed the idea that men have a supremacy over woman. Comparing disadvantage is definitely not constructive and it tends to push life quality downward, but how can you deny the disadvantages weights in the balance? In fact, that's explicitely the way a lot women issues are treated, by comparing women and men in term of "privileges".
Men can be legally genitaly mutilated anywhere on earth. Women are protected to the point that mentioning that men can have their genitals cut up is seen as mysoginy
[–]HeForeverBleeds 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
if there are other examples where women are disavdantaged?
Even if there were, that would only mean both males and females are disadvantaged. That wouldn't somehow negate the disadvantages that males face, making them privileged
[–]Arby01 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think the actual answer here is that the only real privilege in the feminist model of the world is economic privilege. It covers pretty much all the racial and gender issues directly.
[–]olatundew 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So men and women are both disadvantaged in different ways? Isn't that the same as saying both are privileged in different ways (if you define privilege as freedom from disadvantage). Kind of just seems like semantics.
[–]HeForeverBleeds 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
In that case, children should be taught about the privilege of both males and also females. As it is, people don't say that both are privileged and this article isn't saying that both are privileged; they're saying males are privileged (not disadvantaged) and females are disadvantaged (not privileged), which is entirely false
Does the writer have an obligation to present both sides? I'm not entirely sure. It is an opinion piece - not actually a summary of their parenting track record (we don't know what other conversations have been had and lessons taught). If a feminist jumped on this subreddit and accused people of neglecting women's rights, would that be the same scenario in reverse?
I'd lean towards saying that journalists have an obligation to present balance, but opinion columnists don't (to the same degree at least). One of the issues is that these lines are being increasingly blurred, and standards of journalism are far from adequate.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Why not teach her son about female privilege? like: -getting shorter or no jail time for the same crime -getting to keep your kids in a divorce -getting to keep your house in a divorce -not being regarded with suspicion every time you are alone with kids -having a massive amount of funding going specifically to your medical needs -getting a better education -living longer -working less -having choice in life about whether you'd like to work or stay home with your kids -having police lock men up on your word alone -being encouraged to succeed in life rather than put down from day one in life as a potential future rapist or wife beater -not having to endure at least a decade of gynocentric hatred at the hands of a twisted education system.
Why shouldn't she tell her son about her own privileges? Maybe that would get in the way of her preparing him for a life serving the needs of women?
