How do you feel about the commodification of sex/love/hypergamy?

I don't think it's any different than it used to be. It just looks different, and we are aware of more than we were before.

Honestly, I would rather people give it to me straight. I grew up thinking that I could find The One™, and believing that they might stick with me in sickness and health and that every day would be magical, etc.

And realistically, it's just not true. It's just romcom culture garbage that's been peddled to us over I don't even know how long.

I don't want the sugar coating. I don't want a fantasy. I don't want fairy tales. I want unvarnished reality. Dating apps and the surrounding discourse have really stripped it away, and it goes to show each individual whether permanent or temporary romantic relationships are worth it based on their temperament. It lets us know just how likely we are to be hurt, and what to expect.

Honestly, it's better now than it ever has been.

I wouldn't feel like that. I don't think OLD and hooking up is how you find romance and intimacy. If you pay to get better access to hot people, it's clear your lust driven and not romance/intimacy.

Okcupid is just making profits out of a clear reality, men and women in OLD only care to engage in sex with the hotter person they can find, either hypergamy or search for diversity still the same reality for both sexes.

I don't agree with the author on swiping right to people you don't feel attracted to. Those are hooking up apps hence you are expected to choose what you like no biggies. The author does hold some valid points about knowing people and realizing their RMV, oftenly here we only discuss the SMV but the author is pointing to RMV.

You don't find RMV through OLD that's not the best environment, not because people in OLD don't have RMV but because they are there for a different purpose which is hooking up. You first develop hobbies and interests then join people who share the same, there you can find RMV but swiping right is easier than reading a book or joining a hobby club etc.

I feel okay/neutral about it actually no - i feel good about it because its part of life as it is and if those who dont want to take part of it can simply not pay or find non/less-transactional ways to get whatever they want

although cash is the quickest way to get certain things

besides focusing on superficial/physical seems to be a big part of those who seek casual sex than 'love' so its no bigger

As long as we have legal needs and wants, and the technology can enable the trade, we are going to get those fulfilled through commodities. The top 0.01 % or higher has always done this, now the rest can do this too at cheaper prices, so it looks like you are against the democratization of these desires.

These products may or may not be good for us, there is still time to go before we can start some post purchase analysis.

Do you derive value from what the masses are doing? What are some of those values? Are you maybe suffering from the tyranny of the majority?

As long as I have the freedom and wisdom to choose my own values and path, I will be happy. What the masses may or may not be interested in has never bothered me.

I like commodification. It highlights important truths (i.e. the reality that the vast majority of people are shallow).

Honestly I think it's stupid. Trying to find a date based on some online popularity contest just sounds like a waste of time. If they're already popular and getting swiped right/constantly messaged, why would they have time for you? Also, judging attractiveness based on what the general populace thinks is hot won't be effective at all if your tastes are atypical. All around just a dumb idea, marketed in a way to get the most money from the most desperate members.

This is just a way to find casual sex, so how much is "dating culture" but just "this culture" is up to debate.

If you are looking for an LTR, you probably shouldn't go to a hookup app, I mean many people DO get an LTR out of such things, it even happens on swinger apps, but you can't be surprised when thats not the outcome.

I find it unsettling and tragic. But luckily, I'm in a happy relationship, so I haven't used OLD in years (thank God). If I'm ever single, I dont know how I'll approach finding a partner. OLD leaves a bad taste in my mouth and subjecting myself to it again is unappealing.

We live in a capitalist society, so I'm not surprised even love is being commodified. I dont want any part of that, so I'll pass.

eh... Sex/love are not being commodified. It always was a commodity. Almost all female primates those as commodity for bartering. Female humans to my knowledge, always did it too.

Humans for a time, because of social pressures and religion just did not commodify much outside of marriage. But marriage and all LTRs was and continues to be just a long term contract of supply of sex/acts of love for the resources of a man. Not too different from a contract of oil supply. Oil does not stop being a commodity just because it is mostly done in long term contracts.

But for a long while now, relationships and marriages no longer guarantee sex for a man, You see, women convinced society that they do not need to keep their side of the contract and that they can/should trade in shorter term contracts, so men feel very little reason to want relationships if they have a safe supply of those commodities.

What changed was just that this commodity instead of being dealt with in long term contracts (LTRs and marriage) is being dealt more and more in short term contracts (STRs and ONSs).

Basically what everyone was doing anyway but now with less of a time suck.

There is a part of me that watches these developments with a kind of existential awe. There's also a part of me that feels relief that I'm completely off the dating market and practically everything I hear about dating/relationships/marriage/children/women/society/etc just seems to just reaffirm that it might have been a very good choice.
