Shit-tests are fully general - people in even slightly dom/sub-type social situation (obvious example: boss/employee) - the sub is going to "test" the dom to see what they can get away with. It's information about where the social boundary is, so they know what they can get away with. Consistently failing these means Yay! I can get away with anything I want!

Now, employees are expected to be obedient to bosses, but in modern relationships, wives/girlfriends are not necessarily expected to be obedient to husbands/boyfriends (unless that's what they're into) - but women still shit test men because (so the theory goes...) there's still a primeval part of her brain that thinks her safety is contingent on their mates strength - both psychological and physical - (pregnancy being dangerous and risky and vulnerable). So failing shit tests makes her anxious and unsafe and unattracted. It's the social equivalent of (in the non-human animal kingdom) females fighting males off until they're overpowered before copulation.

When women fail shit-tests, men just feel like they're gotten away with something and are happy.

There's really a plethora of stuff on passing shit-tests in the PUA literature, so I won't go over it. It's basically non-compliance, mixed with humour & amused mastery.

Trying to make you jealous by mentioning that there's some guy at work who likes her and the dreaded "would you still like me if _____" are the most common ones I've seen.

I'm still not sure about the psychology behind them, but I've never come to regret cracking a joke in response to one.

Originally in pua it was mostly applied to testing of the limits and personal qualities of someone, where one can pass or fail depending on the general disposition or actions done in response. Though, lately it seems to be applied to basically any test that could be contentious or a power struggle.

"Argument arises. She say's fine she's leaving."
"That girl is pretty attractive huh?"
recurringly bringing up a shortcoming your self-concious about you?

Here's a good one.

I was talking to a girl at a bar, and she was into me. I asked her outside to get some air, intending to kiss her.

When I went for the kiss, she turned away and walked back into the bar without waiting to see if I was following her.

I went back in, but did NOT go back to her. Instead I went to my friend at the bar and started talking to him.

Withing 60 seconds, she walked up and started talking to my friend. I busted on her for being rude and interrupting our conversation.

The shit test was, "walking away from me and seeing what I would do." I passed it because I displayed that I wasn't phased and didn't need her.

Good question. I will let the Reds answer their part but I will say that men do this too, and one example is the infamous One Night Stand. Basically, if you give it up on the first night your soul is in their hands. Also, the Text Ignoring! Where they ignore your texts or are out doing something...are out doing something...and you stupidly text them, "Are you there?" all day while they smirk at their phones.

Men do the same thing. Just in different ways.

I think so. I know guys who didn't have a clear picture of what they wanted in a partner. They'd ask about their SO's relationship history, act all fine and open about it, and then later complain about it to me or others... sometimes even admitting that they weren't as fine and liberal/"open-minded" as they thought they were initially.

I don't think it was an intentional thing for them. It's not like they were fishing for dealbreakers or consciously "testing" the partner. They were just... curious.

It just ended up turning into a sort of test.

Passing grade: "Yeah, I'm going over to an orgy with her and the other waitresses later". Passing grade (said with a smirk): "What, you didn't like little Flirty McFlirtster?" Passing grade: (ignore it).

Maybe passing, depending on delivery: "I didn't notice". Any hint of being embarrassed or apologetic makes you fail. Any hint of sucking up to her makes you fail.

Failing grade: "Oh baby I'm sorry, you know I love you. Let me get on the phone and complain, they shouldn't disrespect you like that. Here are some flowers I bought to make you feel better"

I believe in the whole shit test concept, but I feel like the description of them is overly vague. The best example I can think of them is this girl I was friends with for years. We quasi-dated a few times over the years and I would notice that whenever we did she would ask these random seemingly disconnected questions. Sometimes about other women, or the future. It wouldn't even happen in the middle of a related conversation, just random. And most importantly the questions would be camoflaged as to seem like meaningless curiousities, but in fact she made huge personal judgements based on them. It was only that we had been friends beforehand that I knew what she was doing and even then I couldn't navigate them very well. Sometimes it was days later before I realized that one had gotten by me.

There was a thousand ways to answer one wrong and only one ,or sometimes zero, ways to answer correctly. The only way to win was not to play.

The concept of "shit tests" is highly overblown, in my opinion. TRP overestimates the number of women who give them, and the extent to which behaving "alpha" is attractive to women.

Men and women definitely shit test each other. It's the rules of the game, and the game is to get the best partner you can. For a woman, a strong leader type in both the physical and mental senses. For a man, a nurturing type to counteract his toughness and stay faithful to him. So a man may shit test a woman in order to see if she is faithful in order to ensure his genetic line continues on, while a woman will shit test to see if the male is strong enough to defend her and their potential children from danger.
