Maybe it's because I'm from a small town but I can't understand not dating or sleeping with someone for fear you might run into them again if it doesn't work out. Big fucking deal, that's life, you're not going to burst into flames if you run into an ex and it's awkward for a couple of minutes.

I'm dating someone from work and I dated people living in the same building and taking the same classes as me in college. I've had friends date flatmates and hook up with neighbors.

I guess I don't see why it's some intolerable risk.

For college dorms at least it only made a difference if the floor was an actual community that hung out together and stuff.

If it was more of a "motel but for an entire semester" kind of situation hooking up with floor mates was not frowned upon at all. The worst that could happen would be going back to awkwardly avoiding eye contact, which is what you were already doing to begin with.

Don’t see a big issue here. The only people I can see not sleeping with/dating due to position or proximity would be your boss/employee, your professor, and your roommate. Anyone else, I mean if something goes wrong, you deal with it (hopefully) like adults. Regularly coming into contact with an ex or ex hookup might be awkward, but it’s not the end of the world. It might not be ideal to date someone you can’t easily distance yourself from, but fact is these are usually the people we’re exposed to on regular basis.

Imo. All these situations heavily depend on context and compatability. While it is generally good advice to not view your workplace/neighbors/other obligatory places as a dating pool. You also shouldn't rule out that the person you could build a happy and fulfilling life with is there.

Of course you need to be pretty sure its not gonna blow up in your face because trying to ask someone out or dating someone in those situations can indeed make things awkward and bad.

A friend of mine tried asking out three of his coworkers. Afterwards he was known as the weird guy who asks out everyone. Worst thing is, i knew a nice cute girl who worked with him and got totally turned off by that even tho she liked him before, as in, she would have said yes if he had asked her out. I think its called "poisoning the well".

So, don't rule it out but be sure and test for compatability first.

Men will be more likely to guard against this. #MeToo era, women gossiping if they feel slighted to new women etc.

If women don't feel like they got a 4 or 5 star experience they are much more likely to cockblock and damage reputations even if the break off wasn't the guy's fault. Women love some petty drama it makes them feel alive and powerful.

Men want peace and zero cock blockers.

Women often on the other hand just want to be able to date whoever they want whenever.

I got my apartment through a bumble hookup. Started seeing someone for a couple months, nothing serious, but we’d hangout time to time and then too hookup. He lives in a small private owned apartment, and was able to talk to his buddy the landlord about getting me in. I’ve been here for awhile, and it hasn’t been a problem. Occasionally run into each other and talk, and he’s been over a couple times to hookup. Helps me out with just about anything. He’s much older and what not so I think it helps out.

I had a townhouse and there was a cute girl that lived next door. I was late 30s and she was early 20s and clearly was being flirty with me. Still not sure why I didn't go for it. I was on apps and seeing plenty of women. But, my neighbor was low-hanging fruit. I even met her dad one time when he was over and I got along with him. In hindsight, I had a great hookup 20' away whenever I wanted it. I guess I had a brain fart moment on not going there.

I've had a few female roommates over the years and they all tried sleeping with me at one point (one was even close friends with my then gf at the time). I knew it was a bad idea, knowing if things went south we'd have a very awkward rest of our lease, but they all ended up resenting me for shooting them down so it was pretty much a lose-lose situation for me either way.

Somewhat recently, I was about to fuck a chick from the next building over but something about her didn't seem quite right. Apparently she knocked on my door while I wasn't home and my next-door neighbor came out and they got into this huge fight. I guess the story was the chick from the other building was tweaked out on meth and making a scene, so my next-door neighbor cussed her out so bad the chick avoided me after that. She was either afraid of my neighbor or humiliated, probably both.

A few months later she got evicted. I guess I dodged a bullet, but I kinda felt bad for the chick. She really liked me and her life totally unraveled in the few months I knew her. I mean, I don't advocate playing Captain Save-A-Hoe, but I kinda wonder if I would've been a positive influence in her life. She wasn't a bad person, she just had some serious problems. If I got all tangled up in that shit, I would've definitely regretted it.
