Viewing a person as a utility, as a means to an end, and not as a complete human being with thoughts/feelings/desires. Sexual objectification is not the only form of objectification, in fact, I'd argue it's not even the most common form: think of how some people treat waitstaff or janitors.

Real definition: seeing someone as nothing more than a sex object. Not simply for the purposes of sex, but literally not being able to imagine them as a person.

Feminist definition: any instance of a man finding a woman attractive.

Objectification is treating some human being like an object, rather than as a human being.

The dictionary should be able to sort that out.

Sexual objectification therefore, is treating someone as a sexual object, not as a sexual human being.

Straightforward.

What individual women ascribe to that, or not, is going to vary.

They could claim that any behaviour is this occurring. Depending on the motive they ascribe to it.

Having sex and not calling her back, could be construed as treating her like a sexual object... or having an orgasm without providing one for her... Or raping her ..... Or anything really that they could say you were not treating me like a human being.

The phrase is only as useful, (or should only be as useful) as the reasonableness of the action she is describing.

The rule should be... If you were behaving in a way you would behave with no-one you recognised as human it must be sexual objectification. But if you are doing that you've got bigger problems.

So, rapes probably in. Hard to make a case you'd assault a human being without compunction (and if you would sexual objectification is immaterial).

But most other things are out. You could reasonably say they are mis-ascribing the wrong motive to my actions, I treat other humans like that too. Not calling back. Don't have to believe shes not a human for that. Sometimes humans don't want to call back other humans, even if they are perfectly well aware they are not objects.

What about a Billboard ? Couple of women in bikinis.

Am I not treating them as human beings ? Would I not put up a billboard of a male in budgie-smugglers ? Of course I would.

They are not being made into objects in anyway, they are being enjoyed for their pleasant appearance as human beings, and it's not sexual objectification to do so. You're treating them like humans. Everything in the ad was consensual. Whats the beef here ?

Applying sexual objectification to that.... is trying to take the same kind of moral approbrium we apply to, say, rape... and then use that moral ickiness to tar something else happening that the speaker doesn't like for some other reason.

It's a way to talk about humans enjoying other humans, as humans and treating them (imperfectly) as humans.... and make that icky like the things that DO treat humans like objects (rape, slavery, chattelry)

Unshared private pictures, nudes from your phone, put up on a great bill billboard by some guy.... Yeah... Sexual Objectification. He's not treating her as you reasonably would another human. He's treating her like an object. I can get with that. Thats nasty enough on it's own to be worth the title.

An ad exec trying to move some suntan oil ? The guys gawping at the picture just as they may do to the women openly in real life ?

They're treating people like people. Even if the ad they're putting up is two guys with their abs showing.

What you have to understand is the history of the concept. Objectification is a purely philosophical term and NOT a scientific one. I can't remember who it was specifically, but I think it was Immanuel Kant who originally came up with it. He had a very different definition of it, and like other ideas like the Marxist class struggle, the feminists just decided to appropriate it and mold it to their own views.

So it's a random piece of philosophy for the 1700s. Penis envy, phrenology, and "scientific racism" are 100 years newer than it. It has never been tested. Never been proven. Even if it would be, it would have to categorized as a thought crime.

Feminists love to cherry pick different pieces of soft science research that mention it, or random bit and bobs they think support it ...while saying men can't understand women's subjective lived experience. I'm still waiting for someone to demonstrate it. I'll be waiting for a very long time.

Sexual objectification is normal for both genders these days. Seeing someone as more of an object of sexual attraction and less as a person with a personality is my definition.

Sex is a mutual act. Both people are supposed to get pleasure out of fucking. But a guy who is objectifying his partner isn't thinking about trying to make her feel good too, he only cares about the pleasure she can bring him. She might as well be a fleshlight for all he cares about her feelings or needs. That is objectification.
