The conventional wisdom is that choosing for good looks/genes is "short-term", while choosing for stability is "long-term"

But in a first world country, the baby is most likely not going to starve and will survive into adulthood. Regardless, when choosing for resources, you're at most assuring years or decades of resource access. Most people are not passing down inheritable wealth of any remarkable significance.

When selecting for genes, however, you're helping shape the future of your entire lineage. Especially in times like these, where a pretty face is itself a saleable commodity thanks to technology.

Genetics don't work perfectly in every instance, of course, but I would say this holds true on average.
