How so far up the feminist indoctrination chain do you have to be, to think that Serena would stand a chance in men's tennis. You just have to watch a women's game and then a men's game to see the large difference in power.

[–]AggiePetroleum[S] 94 points95 points96 points 9 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

I love how they act just so utterly appalled that he would make such a claim, especially considering that he said this after he was pressed, "Why not just call her the greatest tennis player of all time? Why say best 'female' tennis player?" LMAO it makes me so happy when they ask him if he wants to apologize to Serena and he just appears baffled that they would want him to apologize for saying that a woman isn't as good as a man at a sport.

[–]pen15rules points 9 years ago* [recovered] (19 children) | Copy Link

Its like the idiots who say women should get paid equally in football. People who know nothing about the sport or the business of sport commenting. I don't like Ronda Rousey but she always shut down those stupid feminist angles that came at her.

Serena is a beast, but to be honest I think Johns being generous with his ranking.

The U15 boys FC Dallas team beat the US Women's National team 5-2

[–]Paladin327 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Also the us national women's hockey team got trounced by a high school team if i recall correctly, the boys team was also somewhat handicapped rules wise too

[–]StarkweatherRoadTrip"I cut my teddy bear a butthole and fucked it from 12-15" 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It was actually a mutual safety concern based on weight disparity. It's pretty dangerous to send skate wearing projectiles sliding around at speeds that no one has seen a hockey player fly at.

[–]allpumpnolove 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nope, it's because there's no contact (as in, intentional checking) in women's national hockey. So it wouldn't make sense for them to practice or scrimmage with checking ever.

Played against them when I was in highschool and there was no contact.

[–]AggiePetroleum[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Jacob?

[–]Prid 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah this is actually a great point that has been spoken about at length. The issue here isn't that a boy football team could beat a national ladies team it is that there just isn't the same commercial worth to it. The England ladies have been saying for a long time that they should be paid the same as men, I actually agree with them. Here is the thing though, nobody wants to watch ladies football. I pay just shy of £40 per month to watch Sky Sports, primarily so I can watch the Premier league. If the ladies could persuade me, most of the rest of the UK and pretty much all of the far and Middle East to part with the same amount, then absolutely they should be paid the same. Thing I see though, they can't so either shut up about it or make their game more enjoyable or more skilful or whatever so people will be prepared to pay for it.

[–]ihavenoenemies 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why do you think the women's team should be paid the same as the men's? They make nowhere near the same amount of revenue. It's simple economics.

[–]Prid 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was my point

[–]norse165 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Many women are delusional to the chasm of ability between the sexes. I was a national champion wrestler in an upper weight class and I'm in my early thirties. My sister doesn't think I'd stand a chance against Rousey at my current weight of 180. Ridiculous.

[–]RobouteGuilliman 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I like Ronda Rousey a lot. Because she would never try to fight George St Pierre.

In NZ rugby I believe the National Women's team have trained with High school rep teams and lost.

[–]nikosteamer 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Id agree withceverything except MMA , when it comes to ground work technique and speed can be more important than strength . Also in my experience being smaller has its advantages when it comes to escaping locks and chokes . In a pure ju jitsu match Id rather have a larger opponent than a smaller one any day of the week

[–]pen15rules points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I partake in the Jits aswell brother. Size would be different to weight. Weight differences kind of equate to strength differences.

If you're a purple belt male versus a purple female, male will win.

If a purple belt female against equal weight male non jits, she probably will win if it goes to ground.

[–]nikosteamer 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

ueah I guess I was meaning more limb length , shorter arms can be advantages in slipping out of chokes or holds , atleast I always found it easier .

Gracie or Brazilian my man ?

I believe both the Williams sisters claimed they could beat anyone outside top 200 and a guy did take them up on the challenge. He smoked them both, iirc he had played a round of golf and had a few beers before the matches.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points42 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We've already seen Serena and Venus try to play a 203 ranked male player.

"Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[34] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".[35][36] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[37] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[38] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".[39] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350."

Meanwhile, Serena still got them to give her "equal" pay with men. Even though women play fewer sets than men and make less money in TV and ticket sales.

[–]NaughtyFred -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I quoted this in an other sub as early as last year now everybody quotes it. I like to think I started a trend.

[–]KiteStringPopped 136 points137 points138 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

This is a bullshit debate because it has already been settled.

Back in 98, the Williams sisters boldly claimed no man in the top 200 could beat them. They faced off against Karsten Braasch, who was 203 at the time. He creamed them, going 6-1,6-2, while smoking cigarettes and knocking back drinks.

So yeah, this bitch couldn't beat a drunk guy chain smoking who was below their ranking, but somehow there is still an argument to be made for it. Fuck out of here.

[–]ericishere 28 points29 points30 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

not sure why people don't bring this up, it just totally shuts down their argument

[–]KiteStringPopped 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because, as you said, "it just totally shuts down their argument..."

These vultures were just trying to get an apology out of a legendary unapologetic figure on live TV to keep the non-news cycle going.

[–]MikeNew513 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Karsten Braasch clearly had no fucks to give.

This sounds hilarious. Would love to see video of this moment.

[–]rush2547 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you but you dont have to call her a bitch.

[–]slcrook 33 points34 points35 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I really like how they ask him how he feels he would rank, and he places himself in a position nearly twice as far down as Ms. Williams, and they keep going at him for making such a terribly offensive statement about a woman tennis player.

"Why not call her the best player in the world?"

Because she isn't. That statement would be less factual than Mr. McEnroe's blind guess at what her ranking would be among male pro tennis players. And guess what? No shame in that, she's far better at tennis than most of us will ever be.

[–]caltemus 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some middling male pro beat both sisters back to back, after a late night of drinking

[–]human_machine 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The story here shouldn't be about John McEnroe at all, it should be what this controversy says about the news media and exploring the truth as opposed to selling a narrative. That's a huge deal and one no one is interested in it.

[–]PintoTheBurninator 34 points35 points36 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love how he offers a solution to the whole question: Just let men and women compete and do away with the idea of separate men's and women's tennis tours. The lady completely blows it off - you can see that she completely refuses to even consider the idea - EVEN THOUGH that goes to the core of what they are berating him for.

"Why not say she is the greatest player of all time?"

"Because she isn't. Let's just combine the men's and women's tours and get to the truth of the matter"

fingers in ears "LALALALALALALALALALALA"

lol i played in a coed league of soccer and drank and smoked on the sidelines and ran circles around the women and they were astonished i was doing that with very little care of their skill.

Fact: Men are better than women at sports.

[–]apatheorist 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Is there anything that both men and women can do where the top isn't dominated by men?

EDIT: The only thing I can think of is gymnastics. But that's hardly comparable since it's what you can do with your own body.

[–]Marthinwurer 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Shooting sports and equestrian. Not 100% sure on why the shooting (including archery and guns) is the way it is, but equestrian is mainly about rich people and horses.

[–]BuddhaFacepalmed 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Modern Archery only need the minimum arm strength necessary for the arrow to reach the target. Guns even less so. Any physical sport that does not require the full musculature of the body do not discriminate amongst gender.

[–]Equilibriator 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A few things...Serena said "Please keep me out of your statements that aren't factually based." So no one can ever give an opinion about her? Give me a break.

Do you want to apologize?

For what? He didn't say anything mean or insulting. Maybe his delivery was mean, I don't know, I didn't hear the interview. But he didn't say she was a bad player. He simply stated that men will have a physical advantage over Serena, which is true. IIRC, Serena herself confirmed that same notion on the Letterman show.

I loved when he said if we really want to put to rest the claim that women are physically just as good as the men then we should combine the categories. Brilliant.

When they asked where he thought he'd place today (at 58? Come on!) in the men's circuit, they clearly thought he'd say the top 10. When he said 1200 (below Serena) they were left speechless because they were prepared to roast him for his hubris.

[–]SubjectiveCompass 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Reporting on such inconsequential statements like this is ruining media credibility and taking up the time that should be spent reporting actual consequential events.

His statement has 0 effect until the media creates it. Any negative results of some random hypothesis an ex tennis pro said are on them.

This is the type of content we need on the sub. True PPD. And it's the type of PPD you can post without people getting offended that a woman is being hit.

This guy just gets grilled and refuses to falter.

[–]cluelesspcventurer 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People forget this is a single competitor sport. 700 is actually really high, hes not saying she would be get on a team ranked 700. The NBA for example has around 500 players. If you said the best female basketball player in the world was almost good enough to play in the NBA people would laugh and tell you to stop being silly.

McEnroe is shooting it straight too, he isn't even saying he could beat the 700th best male player in the world let alone 1199.
