Excellent Boy Books

I recommend the series "Tucket's Travels" by the same author - there are like 5 of them and I read through them so many times. The story is about a boy who is kidnapped by indians from his family's wagon train and comes of age while going through adventures all over the wild west as he makes his way to Oregon to find his family, spending time with Indian tribes, outlaws, fur trappers, and more. I definitely recommend Gary Paulsen books for boys!

For girls I recommend the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, and James Herriot books. They are a little more female-oriented, and in the case of James Herriot especially, gentle and sweet. I think you'll find most girls will enjoy the Gary Paulsen books as well, though, or at least my sisters and I did.

Since my MIL died, my husband has been bringing home some of the books that he read as a child. I've been reading them and I'm amazed at how grown up they are. I have also read the Harry Potter books and am amazed at how childish they are in comparison; they have really dumbed down reading material for kids.

Most of the books we got were from "World Junior Library" and were sci-fi from the 1950s from Malcomb Jameson, who was a writer for The Twilight Zone. He has a series about a man named Bullard in the Space Patrol.

Another series was written about a hundred years ago, by Edward S Ellis called the "Alamo Series" and a few other series that I haven't read but sound really great for boys. These books teach standing up to their own fears to overcome enormous obstacles.

The first children's books I read as a kid was The Happy Hollisters series. They are a family of "super sleuths" that find and solve mysteries wherever they go. I loved these books and read them when I was around 4-6 years old. They are really good for the beginning reader and are great for both boys and girls.

I remember doing book reports on that series in elementary school. I really enjoyed them as a kid!

I'm surprised nobody has said Jack London! He wrote White Fang and a lot of other books about boys and wolves. Even as a girl I loved them but they have a good element of adventure and survival that I think little boys would like.

As a child I really loved Enid Blyton's books - especially The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, and the Faraway Tree series. There are a mixture of male and female characters and I think boys and girls would equally enjoy them.

It includes a nice mix of stories that are appropriate for younger audiences, like Swiss Family Robinson and The Hobbit, and older books, like The Three Musketeers.
