Off topic chat: What are you reading/watching/making right now?

I just finished reading "Radical Homemakers" by Shannon Hayes and I absolutely adored it! It really jumpstarted our homesteading plans for the future. She talks about the woes of the "extractive economy" and the trap so many fall into of working for others to be able to barely afford their lifestyle and spend their life drowning in useless material poessions. She addresses pretty much every aspect from lifestyle, from food and work, education, health care, childcare, and so on. Defintely a great read!

I actually read that in conjuction with, "The Millionaire Next Door", which my husband and I read together. And it was awesome to see all the overlaps in financial and life advice!

A recent documentary I adored was "Cooked" on Netflix by Micheal Pollan. He's written some amazing books, and really takes apart what's wrong with the industrialized diet. But he doesn't preach any fad diets (like keto or paleo or whatever) he actually talks about real, simple healthy eating around the world And watching that lit the fire in me to start making my own sourdough and cheese form raw milk, which I love to do now!

We are on the road to our new home right now, so there's not much space for making anything. But I so look forward to settling next week and breaking out the sewing machine!

I am finally reading (listening to) Roots by Alex Haley.

While listening to Roots I am working on my husband and I's costumes for the Texas Renaissance Festival. 😊 Lots of fun but definitely challenging!

I just read The Citadel by almost forgotten Scottish author A J Cronin. Entertaining, uplifting and very Red Pill. Strongly recommended!

I’m finishing up To Kill a Mockingbird for my book club meeting in 2 weeks. I’ve really enjoyed reading it as an adult, there was so much I missed when I read it as a preteen in school! The audiobook is narrated by Sissy Spacek, she does a great job.

I’m watching The Staircase on Netflix with my husband. I don’t want to get into it about my opinion of the case, but good god the female prosecutor looks like a Disney villain come to life! She’s so cartoonish, I cannot take her seriously whatsoever.

I’m listening to my favorite album of all time: Strange Trails by Lord Huron. I recently learned that there is a companion graphic novel and I need it in my life.

I revamped my front porch tonight while my husband was out. The baby goes down at 7, so after that I vacuumed/mopped/re-sealed the saltillo tile, wiped down the existing patio set (the ones with cushions that badly need replacing), and then assembled the metal chairs and tables. The picture is bad, so you’ll have to take my word for it that it turned out cute. The rug and chair cushions are just placeholders until they can be replaced (they were all free and came to me worn out) but they made it cozier so I left them.

I'm reading Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast, which I got for my Bday! The guys that wrote it and provided the photography are old friends and the book is gorgeous!

As for recipes, it's been non-stop canning and pickling and fermenting so I've picked up a few new favs for the shelves.

I read Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

It’s in my top three favorite books of all time. It was overflowing with red pill truths in every character. Anna basically self destructs and ruins her life because her husband stopped giving her tingles. It really read as a warning against chasing emotions down the rabbit hole. Fantastic read!

Watching: Revenge. Yeah, I have my guilty pleasures. I know.

Making: Trying to learn to cook! I was never taught this growing up. Brought a basic recipe book, promised myself to make a new recipe a week.

The thing I am most excited about right now is my new miter saw. I have a project list as long as my arm and can't wait to get started on them when school starts back up. First up is a simple ironing center and a blanket ladder. I just finished tearing our old rotting deck down and cut down the pieces that were salvageable. That has taken all my free time other than gardening.

I have been making a super tasty peanut sauce for dinner recently and also trying to make more sauces in general and making the effort to use more spices in the kitchen.

I watched the Netflix show Erased recently and LOVED it. Like, in a way that I did not see coming.

I am constantly reading via Kindle Unlimited but nothing really of note recently. Kind of been doing the easy Carolyn Brown-esque route or things like cozy mysteries. I've been using it more for escape rather than growth I suppose. I did just get a recipe book of bread machine recipes that I am interested in reading. I have some gardening books I checked out from the library but none of them jumped out at me or are something I would really recommend.

I've just finished reading Just Kids by Patti Smith. I've been a huge fan of her music and poetry forever, but didn't know how much I'd love her prose! It's all about her relationship with Robert Mappelthorpe and their very unconventional love/friendship. Beautiful book!

I’m reading “My Dark Places” by James Ellroy. It’s a [very graphic and honest] account of the unsolved murder of the author’s mom in the 1950’s. I’m reading it for book club and while I like true crime this wasn’t my first choice since I think it will be hard to discuss and it’s just fact heavy/sad.

Listening to the “Mamma Mia 2” soundtrack helps lol
