If you don’t have a long term committed partner, I don’t think you need to be on birth control especially if you have so many potential complications/side effects.

Listen, I’m also VERY high libido, and like you I had a low n-count when I was still single. But even though I was often tempted, I never did anything risky or regretful, and if you’ve gotten this far with only one partner, I highly doubt you’re going to do something you regret until your next. Even in the case that you do, as long as you use a condom, the likelihood of you getting pregnant during a hook-up is very low.

I just don’t think all the risks of birth control are worth it if you are single and not even sexually active. You can consider it if you meet someone you like, but for now, I’d consider about getting off of it.

If your doctor is not an OBGYN, I would talk to a few others. Literally all forms of birth control have risks associated with accidental births. The progesterone only IUD is a similar risk profile to the other IUD's (without the risk of extra bleeding from copper IUD's.) Schedule some time with an OBGYN education expert and go over the options. There are progesterone only implants, shots, and IUD's that may help. (Anecdata: I've been on progesterone only IUD for a year now with no issues. I do get random periods, but they aren't heavy and there's plenty of time to get a pad when needed.)

The one class of bc you've not mentioned are barrier methods. There's the cervical cap, diaphragm, and contraceptive sponge. First two IIRC need to be custom fitted so you go to a gynecologist for a prescription - last is the least effective. But all are used combined with spermicidal jelly.

They're not AS effective on their own in comparison to, say, an IUD, but I assume you're combining this with condom usage anyway, and doubled-up your effectiveness rate should be great.

I’ve never used a hormonal birth control, but I have traked my fertility to prevent pregnancy (which worked!) but I’ve also started using a diaphragm postpartum and have loved it. If you don’t want to get a prescription or fitted for one, or like me you have very limited female health options locally, you can order from places outside the US. I use the Caya diaphragm with Contragel. Contragel is like a spermicide, but does not actually kill sperm, just blocks its entry to the cervix. A great non hormonal option!

So far I’ve loved it and have other friends who have used it longer than me with success. I ordered from apo health based in Germany. Even if you don’t plan to use it immediately, shipping took about a month so it would be nice to have on hand. It’s only $50 plus the cost of Contragel ($10ish a month using 4x give or take a week). Another benefit is that they last three years with minimal maintenance (light washing after use). I recommend it to anyone not wanting hormonal birth control but also not having the time to track fertility signs confidently.

I highly recommend Nexplanon! It’s over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and my periods have gotten so much lighter. I used to have horrendous cramping and I barely get cramps these days. I haven’t seen any side effects either.

I’d highly recommend doing a lot of research into birth control. There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation out there. Birth control isn’t poison; it allows us to take charge of our own health. If you’d unable to use birth control, I’d recommend sticking with condoms.

The contraceptive pill and other hormonal methods are absolute poison for women’s health. Please find out why your periods are irregular, heal yourself and make them regular, and then fertility awareness or condoms etc :)

Try reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility and charting the signs. Having periods of the same length is not a prerequisite for charting, you may even find out some of those spots are ovulation spotting.

However, if you just have sex anyway and don't trust condoms then fertility awareness will not be a good fit. Because it requires abstention or condoms on the fertile days. So it's the exact same problem before the fertility awareness.

I'm currently on the copper IUD but I chart anyway just for fun. Caffeine makes cycles heavier and more painful, and vitamin B complexes make periods less painful. Try drinking less caffeine during your period and a couple days before it (if you've confirmed ovulation with charting and know your luteal length) and eating more vit B or supplement vit B before/during your period as that is easier. That could be enough to make the copper IUD work for you.

Full text: Hello ladies of RPW! I was wondering if anybody had advice on birth control.

I’m in a bit of a specific situation; I can’t take estrogen-based birth control due to significantly increased stroke risk (from blood condition), and my cycle is very irregular, so I can’t do the fertility awareness method (which is what I read many women recommended on this sub).

I currently have a copper IUD in, and I think I’m going to get it removed in December. My periods are significantly more painful, and I get random cramping all the time; people have said symptoms usually go away in 3-6 months, but it’s been 11 months now and it’s barely improved.

Progesterone-only is an option, but my doctor warned me he’s seen several women get pregnant when they use that as their method of contraception, so I’m wary of that.

I know I’m being really picky, but I honestly hate birth control! I don’t like the thought of messing with my hormones, the non-hormonal copper IUD currently isn’t working for me, and just using condoms feels too risky to me.

I’m currently single and for a variety of reasons, I want to wait to have sex until I’m in a significantly committed relationship. Part of me thinks not having birth control would be a good motivation to hold that boundary. However, I am aware that I have a VERY high sex drive and there’s always the chance that I’ll make a dumb choice in the future, which is why the safety net of birth control might be a good thing. To be clear I don’t sleep around (my n is 1), I just really believe in being prepared. Not to mention, when I'm in a relationship, I understand that my partner will want to have sex (as will I), and I'd like to be able to do that!

Does anybody have any suggestions for birth control options, or how to approach this situation? Thank you all for your time!

I also have a copper IUD. Mine was inserted in July of this year, and it's the second one I've had in my life. (I'm 32) I have only done hormonal BC twice because it's always scared me to think of messing with my body's natural hormones.

Here's what I've learned about copper IUD's after my second one was inserted.. So, my old one would always give me random and insane cramps. Heavy flow, and spotting a lot. When I went to get my new one, they said that they had to measure my cervix in order to properly insert it. THAT was the painful part, not the insertion.

Since I got the new one, I've had no spotting, no random death cramps, and sex isn't painful like it used to be. I recommend finding out if your IUD is properly in place, because if it's not, it'll give you absolute hell.
