I understand your perspective because it used to be mine a couple years ago. However these days I put in the time to always look very put together when I leave the house and it’s simply because of the power and opportunities looking beautiful gives you. People go out of their way to help you, men constantly ask you out and the world completely opens up to you.

If I don’t try at all I’m still treated well but when I do my makeup and hair and have a great outfit, it’s a different level. Maybe you call it vanity, but I promise you it is the feminine super power. Make the most of it while you have it!

I'd like to push for a little self reflection here.

You have given yourself freedom from the effort of your appearance. That is something you are entitled to choose for yourself and the only person who should have any say in that is your partner.

What you haven't done is to free yourself from comparison. You are here telling us that you are not vain and that makes you happy. But you go on to use language that others are "enslaved to vanity" and you want to know if it's "a burden".

This post is not exclusively about your feelings on your appearance and beauty routine. It is about your routine compared to what others do. Why? If you are happy with your looks and you are happy with your routine then you should feel nothing for the women you see who spend hours on themselves.

Between skin care, hair, make up, nails, fashion, fitness, and diet - it sometimes feels like everything I do is for my looks. The cost of it all can be a little overwelming. But like others - I truly enjoy it. Makes me feel more in touch with my femininity. I also am treated better by co-workers, strangers, and my LTR loves it.

On the flip side, I have no qualms about not wearing make up in public. I will throw on some comfortable clothes, baseball hat, and no make up and kick around home depot with my LTR.

The true slaves to vanity are the women who don't have the confidence to dress down or leave the house without a full face. The women who feel less than without it. A confident women dresses up and fusses with her looks because she enjoys it.

I spend a lot of time on my appearance. I guess I am vain. But, it's also a hobby. It's relaxing and fun. I mostly feel secure in my appearance unless I am having PMS, then I start to have insecure thoughts. But again it's only during that time. I'm on the opposite spectrum of you. I'm wondering if I'm too vain and if it's causing me any harm.

Of course every thing can become an obsession and taken to an unhealthy extreme, makeup and beauty is no different.

Personally, it took me decades to get to the point where I felt like it was ok for me to want to be attractive and beautiful and it wasn’t a sign that I was a horribly shallow ass of a person trying to be someone I wasn’t. It was a huge insecurity in me that other people might find out I wanted to be attractive to men. Sounds insane right? And yet, there it was.

I don’t do my hair and makeup everyday because I’m lazy but when I do get up earlier and take the time to do it it really sets my day up in a lovely way. Starting out with time just to myself doing exactly what I like to make myself happy and pretty makes me feel calmer and more centered for the rest of the day. Showing that you care enough about yourself to put in that extra effort is a powerful thing.

It makes her feel good, sometimes it'll make her look prettier but at the end of the day it's about the ritual and about feeling good when you walk out the house. I'm also a non makeup lover but, I have two points to make. Number one I turn 30 and I don't think you'll be saying this exact same thing once you've hit your 30s or 40s, make up becomes your greatest ally. Number two I work sales so if I were no makeup and I don't straighten my hair it tends to make my numbers decrease, I know that sounds ridiculous but hear me out. I also only wear certain colors when I'm pitching a sale. It's got to be Superstition at this point I'm not sure, but I stay away from brown red orange or any kind of patterns

I actually don’t put a lot of effort into applying makeup (my daily “get ready” routine might take 10 minutes max if so), but I do understand the women that feel very enslaved to vanity. For most men, beauty is the only asset a woman can offer them.

A lot of women also feel more confident and better about themselves after spending a lot of time on their appearance. If this helps them in the long run, then I encourage it. Unfortunately imo in the majority of cases it actually encourages narcissism and self-insecurities in the long run.

Personally, my bf likes me more simple, so I don’t feel the need to modify my appearance with cosmetics and such as much. I don’t really go out a lot anymore (if I do, it’s always with someone), I don’t really care what other men think about me as long as my man likes me, lol. I’m impervious. I guess I attained freedom in a way when I found the right person for me.

My goal as a married woman (late 20’s with kids, firmly out of the man-hunting game, but want to be attractive to my mate) is to both look healthy and vibrant, and to be healthy and vibrant.

For me, that looks like getting my nails and brows done every couple weeks, head spas to promote healthy scalp, a hair masque each week, no heat products on my hair, solid consistent skincare, nice perfume, and a pretty minimalist makeup routine (tinted serum, concealer, mascara, maybe blush in the winter, and some lip oil).

I find that this combo is enough to look and feel put-together, but not to feel enslaved or burdened by an excessive “beauty routine”. I’ll occasionally go more “all out” for a date night, but most days I keep it pretty simple! 🥰

A demanding beauty routine is only a burden with the wrong mindset. There’s a world of difference between going into your hour-long morning ritual thinking “Ugh, I have to do this or else I’ll look hideous” versus “I’m going to do this so I can look extra pretty!”. If you obsess over minor flaws and can’t stand to show your natural features, your routine becomes a chore driven by anxiety and poor body-image— I consider that a burden. But a beauty routine can also be a form of self-care or a creative outlet that women actually enjoy; they have fun with the process and appreciate the benefits of looking good, yet they know it’s not the end of the world if they’re seen looking less than perfectly polished.

Full text: So I like to look good but I have never been in to putting in an hour to fix my hair and makeup every morning. I don't wear makeup but I try to dress well and I get my eyebrows done.

When I look at women who do that kind of thing I admire their appearance and effort but I also think that they're kind of enslaved to vanity. I don't want to be judemental, I understand that it's every person's choice to decide how they present themselves to the world but I wonder if others share my perspective, women spend hours on their appearance does it ever feel like a burden?

I feel grateful that I am free from feeling like I have to put effort into my appearance to be acceptable. I'm not Christian but it does make me think maybe there is some wisdom in vanity being a bad idea. Would love to hear thoughts from this community.

I'm more into having a nice complexion than caking my face with make up. To me make up is suppose to enhance beauty. Not cover it up. You want some blue on the eyes, add some blue. Want pinker cheeks, add some pink. Enhance beauty, don't cover it up. Skincare is hard to keep correct since it seems once a month my hormones want to turn me into a pizza face. Lol

I appreciate a woman that clearly puts effort into herself. It isnt always vanity.

I would say the opposite is true. I am quicker to call a woman "slovely" is she clearly doesnt try to put in effort.
