What is the problem? (Neutral phrasing: use words like "we," and "our" so that you aren't trying to off-load problems at your SO's feet when there's actually plenty of blame to go around)

I feel upset that my SO and I have stopped bonding over activities just us two. All we do when we hang out is lay low at his place and watch tv. I am ok with this, but then get jealous/upset when he does more exciting activities with his friends. It's not that I'm not doing things with my own friends, as well, but it's that he seems unwilling to do things like, for instance, go to a fall festival unless it's with his friends. The other problem is that when I try to communicate to him that I think it'd be fun to do something else or that my feelings get hurt if he rejects me for happy hour but does it with his friends, he gets really offended and says I'm not giving him space with his friends and that I should be grateful for all of the time we spend together. He says I'm telling him he's not fun enough (but that's not what I intended to communicate), but I don't know how to communicate that I also feel that he's saying I'm not fun enough for certain things.

What are your faults? How have you contributed to the creation of these issues?

I definitely am always willing to watch netflix with him and sleepover, especially if I have nothing else going on with my friends. I think the main thing I'm doing wrong is communicating, because everything I say to him seems to be offensive. I don't really think (right now) that what I'm feeling should be offensive to him, so clearly I am not bringing it up the right way or maybe I AM being offensive and acting ungrateful and I need you ladies to help me see that.

I'm also insecure. Our relationship definitely blossomed very slowly as he has always 100% been in control of the pace. I obviously really like him, but I'm scared he doesn't like me as much. When he does provide reassurance, I feel better, and I try to remind myself he likes me because we at least sleep over every day, he calls me to talk every morning when we drive to work, and we're pretty much in constant communication. He is really honest and tells me who girls are when they hit him up, even if I might not like the answer. He would never cheat, and has made sacrifices for our relationship. Yet I'm still insecure that he doesn't like me as much as I like him- and maybe it's true that I like him more, but sometimes I worry how much less it is on his end.

Perhaps I am entitled. He made me feel so special when we first started dating. He chose me. I want that feeling back- that he wants to have fun and do things with me.

Perhaps I am trying to fill a role that he doesn't want me in- I'm not his friend, I'm his girlfriend. Even though we used to date, maybe he doesn't see me as someone to do activities with, as that's what friends are for. I don't think he would ever say this to me even if it were true, though, because he will always insist that you should keep dating your SO- the problem is I feel like he's not staying true to that idea.

Why do you think this (these) problem(s) manifested?

I kind of got used to going out on dates in the beginning of our relationship, and he also told me that he always felt dating your SO is important. Therefore, now that the dating has stopped, I feel like I'm not as important, even though he says I am and even does little things to show him I am. Even though we are way more committed now and more "serious", I feel sometimes like a hook up buddy since we netflix 'n chill when it's just the two of us. I know he's been busier with work and some things, but I don't necessarily want more of his time, I just want to feel like he is excited to hang out with me like he used to be. I don't think it's that I feel entitled to dates.

What steps have you already taken to try and resolve the problem?

To address the specific issue, I've tried:

  1. Trying to let it go by reminding myself I'm his soft place to land. I can do this a lot, but it doesn't help for everytime. I still get my feelings hurt when he, for example, tells me he and his friends are going to this craft beer event I had been asking him to go to for ages. It's hard for me to immediately stay calm and hide my upset feelings.

  2. I tried to plan our own date- I suggested I take him out and he was initially ok with the idea, but then got stressed out because I was having trouble planning a date that fit his requirements. I was being such a control freak during the whole planning process that we just dropped the idea.

  3. I have tried to suggest things to do more casually, but he says he would prefer to stay in. I'm not bothered by him wanting to stay in, but I do get bothered if he then does the thing I suggest the next night with his friends instead.

  4. I have tried to talk to him about it- I brought it up once or twice in August but lately the subject has come up a bit more frequently because I can't hide the fact that I get upset. I'll say something like "I understand you need time to do things with the guys, but it hurts my feelings that you seem excited and willing to go out with them but not with me just us" but what he hears is "Netflix isn't good enough for me, you're not fun, I hate it when you hang out with just the guys, you need to spend more time with me, and you're a shitty boyfriend for not wining and dining me." I swear I have not said any of those things, but that's what he's hearing. Sometimes, he has tried to reassure me that he doesn't want to go downtown, he just has to because that's what the guys decided, but then I feel bad about myself when I see his snapchats of him having sooo much fun, yet he insists that he has the most fun when he is just hanging out with me, even though his face doesn't show it. Sometimes he will invite me out to hang out with the guys, but that's not what I'm asking for- sure, sometimes I have fun hanging out with him, but I want to spend a night just us two doing something that's not in his bed. Is this something that other couples do or don't do? He will also say things like "yeah I want to do something exciting with the guys tonight and I know if I hang out with you we'll be doing the same old bars. that doesn't mean I want to do something exciting every night. most nights I really do just want to lay low with you" but that is frustrating to hear because he associated me with the "same old", which is exactly what I am trying to avoid, and my feelings aren't hurt that he enjoys laying low with me, it's that when the mood does strike him to do something exciting, it only happens with his friends and not me.

In general, I always try to add value to his life to try and prove to him that I can be valuable and also less easy than other girls to replace. I cook for him, try to clean for him when he lets me, adapt my plans when I can for him, help him sometimes with work things, and try to destress him with massages, etc. I help to make our conversations on the phone interesting and not just small talk.

How long has this been an issue?

I felt a little bit like this in July but he reassured me that he truly would rather just relax with me than do anything else, and we also were still doing activities once in a while (it's just they had slowed down). I didn't really start feeling this way until a couple of weeks ago, when I was upset that he was going to happy hour again with his friends but I realized we haven't even had a glass of wine together in two or three months. It just seems like he is lying to me when he says he wants to not drink as much and focus on things and needs to not go out, but then will do it with his friends.

Are you making a mountain out of a mole-hill? If a woman you really despised came to you with this issue, would you still think it's a legitimate concern? Or would you tell her she's throwing things out of proportion?

I really really REALLY hope I am throwing things out of proportion. It would be so much easier to fix my attitude and learn to just love the time we have together. Maybe he is just getting more comfortable in the relationship, but I'm almost taking it as a lack of interest. The thing is, he does do things for me- he brought me soup during his lunch break a few weeks ago when I was home sick. He definitely does bail on his friends on weeknights to relax with me because he doesn't want to drink as much on weeknights. He tries to include me when his friends hang out unless it's a designated guys' night. We have even stayed in a few Saturday nights together, because that's what he wanted and I wanted to be with him. So why, then, am I feeling so upset when I want to go somewhere with him or take him out, and he won't be in the mood but then will magically be inspired if he knows his friends are going?

How's your bedroom life right now? Are you taking care of his needs emotionally and physically?

Well, since we ARE getting plenty of "netflix n chill" time in and having sleepovers pretty much every night, we are still getting it on very regularly. We have always had sex a lot, and that has not changed- if anything, we do it more often. Honestly 2-3 times a day. Emotionally, I do think I'm there for him, but I can tell I stress him out when I try to communicate this issue to him.

Thank you in advance.
