Your best self defense as women is either a weapon, being in a group or running, screaming, NEVER try to fight a man unarmed, most criminals know how to fight and are much more aggressive than average.

I started self - defense classes after my SIL was assaulted last year. The flood of incoming Fuckilants made this top priority.

Never try to engage in a fist fight with a man. Its a recipe for a disaster. I dont care if you take krav maga or are a boxer. The type of man that will hit you back will do serious damage to you. The difference in upper body strength is too great to overcome.

Try a grappling art like judo or Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Get a carry license.

Buy a gun.

Learn how to use it.

Carry everywhere.

You can find training in your area by visiting your local gun shops and asking around. Definitely get training.

Yes! I strongly recommend self-defense classes for women, and made sure my niece and stepdaughters learned a few techniques and dirty tricks.

Great if your attackers have the courtesy not to outnumber or overpower your SO.

If anyone comes at me on the street, they'll get a face full of mace. If they invade my home and my husband is not there, I will shoot them myself.

Most attacks initiate within a few feet. Practice Tueller Drills if you're serious about weapon based defenses. With practice and a good holster, you can draw and fire a weapon against an attacker beginning about 21 feet away.

If you draw a weapon but fail to end the attack using it, it will certainly escalate the attack and probably be used against you. This is why hand combat skills are essential. You need to actually practice, so you act reflexively and decisively in a crisis.

Being proficient in martial arts changes your body language in subtle ways that make you telegraph "Not an easy victim." I've observed people making test microaggressions and threats, and when I don't flinch or cower, they disengage before attempting further escalation.

Learn to break holds, apply wrist locks, how and where to strike if necessary, and ground (bed) combat. It's critical to practice so there is no hesitation in a crisis.

It's foolish to declare, "I could never overpower a man, so I'm not going to learn any self-defense techniques." Martial arts is about learning ways to equalize strength and size advantages. When a new student came to our dojo, we'd often do a demo where myself and another guy, 6'4 and 6'5, would repeatedly attack our smallest student, a <5' 85# Filipina. She would throw us to the ground repeatedly until we were dizzy and exhausted.

Krav Maga is a good defense art because it is BRUTAL. One of its main principles is Retzev, where once an attack begins you attack the opponent ruthlessly so they cannot counterattack. Judo turns an attacker's weight and force against them, and has some excellent ground techniques. Aikido (which I studied because it's a defensive art) teaches how to apply wrist locks and control the opponent's balance.

Look for self-defense videos by Dr. Ruthless on youtube. This is a good place to start for inspiration. ONLY watching videos won't help much, one must get on the mat and PRACTICE.

Most Dojos have an excellent community. If one doesn't seem to fit well by all means seek out one that does. Also, community colleges often offer women's self-defense classes.

Over the years, three female students from our dojo were assaulted, and drove off or in one case incapacitated their attackers.

Not being a victim by default is a skill every woman can learn.

DH is about 50 pounds heavier than me, a lot more muscle, and gets very angry when someone tries to hurt me.

But, I have a black belt (almost got 2nd degree) in Tae Kwon Do, several gold medals in state competitions for sparring and grappling. I also had some training with disarming someone with a knife and/or a gun, as well as using a bo staff.

I know better than to mess with a person holding a gun or a knife. Gun is scarier than knife, because 99% of the time that person is jumpier than you and they can shoot you accidentally.

That being said, if someone every grabs you, go for the groin. Always, always go for the groin. Hit it hard, like you want to kick through the other side of him. Your elbow is the strongest part of your body, throw it like you mean it. Like you're trying to bust through a door. Don't hold back.

The man's strength lies in his reach, but a woman's strength lies within that reach. Get close, which goes against our normal responses. Using his weight against him, and pull the joints in the opposite direction that they bend can immobilize them in pain and/or break their joint.

Grabbing the arm, and stepping over it, then sitting on the elbow can break the arm easily. But again, you need to do it like you mean it. Don't be hesitant. Swift and hard.

At college, my roommate (in a sorority) asked me to teach her. I taught her sorority as well, because there was a crazy man attacking women that walked home from the library or late classes.

I explained it to them that you should hit your opponent like you're punching through a board or basically anything that you want to get to the other side of. Hit it like it will break, like it will shatter into a million pieces.

That's the only way you'll be able to really land a hit that will stop them. If you punch it like it's a solid object, you will naturally slow down and hesitate.

My mom was very determined to have my sister and me be able to defend ourselves from attackers. I have yet to use it in a real life scenario, but I have taught it to many of my female friends who all felt empowered and even one used it on a domestic violence situation.

EDIT: Btw, the purpose of these moves is not to kill them or hold them down. It's to hurt them enough so that they're screaming and in pain and you can run for your damn life. Don't stick around. The moment you get them gasping for air, look elsewhere, or let go of you, RUN.

Real answer...full disclosure, I'm a Cop-

Don't drink or use drugs...or hang out with people who do. The vast majority of bad shit that can happen to you, will start with the line "We were drinking and..."
Use basic safety measures- Lock your doors, don't go to crappy parts of town, avoid dangerous situations. Yeah, it's lame, weak, whatever...but that art exhibit in the ghetto is not worth getting raped behind a dumpster by an AIDS infected crackhead.
Fortify your residence. This is easy...just spend the money on a real dead bolt lock, door devil reinforcing plate, and use it. Never open the door for strangers...never. Talk through the door. Use an alarm. Set it at night.
Learn to fight and develop a violent mindset. Flat out...you end up in a fight, fight to win. If you lose, assume you are going to die or worse. That mindset is built through time in the mat room getting hit in the face. Aggression, speed, violence of action...with the reality that you will still get your ass kicked by a grown man and need to read # 5.
Buy a gun. Yeah, you can hate guns, think guns are evil...whatever. Guns make up for muscle. God may have made men, but Sam Colt made them equal. That is reality. Buy a Glock 19 and go to a real shooting school. Trident Concepts, Pat Mac, etc.
Learn real medicine. If you have a plan to get violent, you need to know how to fix yourself. Tac Med is valid for everyone. Buy a kit, learn to use it.
Comms- Being able to call for help is life. Out of comms is death. Always have working comms and a backup.

I love self defense and learn krav maga in my MMA classes. I also love jiu jitsu and am looking forward to returning after months off due to a foot injury.

That being said, I do like being with a guy that I also feel could protect me if necessary. But I'm not going to rely on just him alone.

I'm learning tai chi. It's a martial art, but not practical in a fight... I'm learning it mostly tob learn how to move smoothly. However, it does give me the tools to move fluidly and interact with the world with immediacy. I'm finding that though tai chi is not practical in a fight, I do have less stress as I interact with my environment.

Thank you. I do think this is appropriate discussion for this sub. My dear girl friend was murdered earlier this year. I'm taking a concealed carry license class on Tuesday! I'm also thinking about self defense classes, either for women only or maybe for combat training or defensive training my DH and I can do together. We've been discussing for a while. He got his CCL last year and I was slower to get on the bandwagon while I appreciated his stance and learned a lot from him. My friend's murder had a serious impact on both of us.

3 days until touching the mat again... My mind takes strange roads, but I'm still looking forward to the lessons.

And even my therapists (yes, I have 2) say, it will be ok... but, as said, my mind does strange things.
