Agreed, despite that the bar for relationship forums is through the floor. The response to anything remotely challenging in any relationship to these people is some jambled mess of the words "red flag, toxic, abusive" and demeaning slurs for men & women (especially men).

Reality check - relationships aren't fun 100% of the time. A lasting relationship will have its fun moments and its challenging moments. Both parties will need to make sacrifices. A woman sacrifices her body to give the biggest gifts of all - the gift of life to a new person. A man will sacrifice his freedom in order to protect & provide.

Challenges are never solved by leaving - unless the couple literally loathes one another, then it's probably for the best. And even these situations were somehow worked through in the past - societies with arranged marriages lasted for millenia. I think the modern world has affected men & women in interesting ways, and not always for the better.

It is really sad how common it is to say well, if you're unhappy, go find happiness. Instead, I feel it should be more if you're unhappy, work at finding inner happiness. That can be therapy, exercise, find a new hobby, work hard at your marriage, work hard at changing YOURSELF and then you will find happiness. However, abuse is a different story but it's hard to determine by just one post from someone to say they are in an abusive relationship unless it's very clear. We don't know the whole story. Personal change is the path to happiness within ourselves and in our relationships.

I am a member of Christianmarriage subreddit and everytime I post advice re the OP making changes themselves rather than leaving or forcing the (usually) male partner to change I’m downvoted into oblivion because everyone just assumes that OP is always blameless and always an angel in a relationship when clearly we only get one side of the story… I much prefer this sub where people hold you accountable and put more emphasis on personal responsibility

It’s so important we share advice because we all know there’s two sides to every story. Very easy to hear one side and say leave, but obviously there’s an entirely different side we aren’t hearing. None of us are perfect.

To be fair, some of the other relationship subreddit post are "My husband punched me what should I do?" Or "my wife wants me to cut contact with everyone that I know, including my family", which is understandable why people comments saying "LEAVE".

But I get what you mean. A lot of them are just simple issues that can be solved through talking.

My opinion is the same as yours about the sub.

The only good reasons to leave your partner are:

Abuse of whatever kind (physical, mental)

Cheating/Lying

Drug/Alcohol addiction

Severe neglect/No communication

Everything else is recoverable.

I 100 percent agree with OP. Sometimes, I feel the people who are giving advice on the other subs couldn't have been in any long term relationships. No one who has been in a long term relationship will ask another person to throw a whole relationship away, over one unkind word or action, however horrible it may seem on the face of it. Nobody appreciates the complexity of relationships and human behaviour in general.

Also, the response largely depends on how OP has framed the issue. If they are very angry and hurt, everyone jumps in attacks the partner, and makes it worse. If the OP is only slightly irritated and have portrayed the partner as a person with both good and bad qualities, the responses are not as harsh. No one pauses to think that it is highly possible that OP is just really upset at the moment with his or her partner and the partner may not be an actual monster.

Also, we are all "toxic" in some form or the other depending on the circumstances, because we are human beings and we mess up.

Then again, maybe that's the culture we are moving towards. Short, sweet relationships. Anytime, there is unpleasantness, people part ways.

I have noticed IRL that the trend is opposite. People dont leave abusive or bad situations bc they believe in long term relationships and feel shame for wanting to leave. I wish people would leave sooner if the relationship is bad. And I live in western country.

Butofcourse. Western society has become more and more about instant gratification. Wait until marriage for sex? NO! Be a slut. Fight with your partner? Dump him, don't try to work it out! Save to buy a house? NO, blow your cash living downtown eating takeout because you never wasted time to learn to cook or save, and then bitch on reddit about house prices!

What was common sense to Boomers is mostly dead. And while some Boomer advice very much deserved to die a fiery death, modern society has tossed a lot of wisdom on the bonfire as well, and NOT replaced it with anything fulfilling, enlightening, or joy-inducing.

And it's intentional, I might add. Hormonal birth control is a big enough problem that society hasn't adapted to yet. But no-fault divorce was the big killer that has really ruined relationships and marriage. Marxism (introduced in the 1920s) and then its metastasizing into first Feminism, then Intersectionality, only has made things worse.

But here, at RPW, we actually try to help people with long-term success and happiness, not hedonism and lazy, easy advice. So we usually counsel working it out and building towards long-term success. If the other subs don't want to do that (I'm looking at you, FDS, datingoverX, etc.) that's on them. There's plenty of market space for the short-term hedonists. But here, we're in it for the long haul.
