I homeschool!!

I’ve been doing it for 8 years. If you have any specific questions please feel free to reach out to me. Also r/homeschool is a great subreddit.

There are lots of resources for kids to have social outlets. :)

I wouldn’t say I’m particularly skilled, but I’ve taught 3 kids to read (so far - still one more). Two of them have dyslexia. There are tons upon tons of resources that are out there to help.

There’s also no reason you have to commit to forever homeschooling. My oldest two are in school this year. Yeah - it takes energy. But it’s so incredibly rewarding. I love it :)

I was homeschooled as a child as were my other 5 siblings. I loved being homeschooled and I highly recommend it if you can dedicate yourself to the process. I went to college at 16, got my bachelor's degree at 20 and started my own business at 24. One of the pros of being homeschooled is we tend to mature faster than our peers in public or private school. I wasn't heavily influenced by peers growing up so I (nor any of my homeschool friends) had a "find myself" stage in life. It was more like "I know what I want in life, how do I find the tools to get there?"

Homeschooling in a marathon and not a sprint. I've seen several moms fall off the wagon because they begin with enthusiasm but loose interest when the kids grow up.

I highly recommend it if you can see yourself committing to it for at least 15 years. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

It’s very dependent on your goals and temperament and your individual child’s needs. Your geographic location and access to enrichment opportunities also matters, plus the quality of the schools available to you.

I think it can be a great option if it works for your family, but far, far more work than typical school.

We're in the same situation, actually. I just had twins and we'd like to try for another, if my cardiologist gives us the green light. I never thought I'd want to stay home with my children. Catholic school was always the plan. I have a bachelor's in education and a master's in library and information studies. I've worked as a teen librarian for years and most of my regulars are home school kids. They're bright, usually out performing their public school counterparts and they're actually far more social. Of course, these are kids whose parents are bringing them to library programs, taking them to co-ops, setting up play dates. Some are also using public online charter schools and have teachers they consult with, as well.

I've always said I'd love to home school, but never thought I'd want to quit my job or that I could financially. Now I've lost most of my passion for my career and only want to be with my girls. It's costing two thirds of my paycheck to send them to daycare and one more baby will take my entire paycheck. My husband has been promoted and we could manage on just his salary, once we get a few things paid off. Since Catholic school would take most of my paycheck anyway, the current plan is for me to quit in June and homeschool our girls and anyone else who comes along. It's a huge undertaking, but I know a ton of families who've had great success and most of their kids graduate early and enter the local community college around age 16. They've all done very well.

They have an online private school version, and if you ever wanted to switch to that, it's available and cheaper than most private schools. But, I love this program. You still need to supplement with hands on learning, but my 7 year old is already through most of 5th grade, in some of 6th grade, doing stems and robotics and is on spanish 2....

It's a go t your own pace, so if you have an easily bored kid who likes school.... it's great.

I like it because it's affodable, it's taught by teachers via videos they can repeat, they can't move forward until they get a passing grade, they have resources and recovery modes to help re-teach things kids forget. They have a HUGE reading library and video education outside of the specific classes, they have electives, they have printable material for parents so you can do experiments in the kitchen and allsorts of activities with instructions and materials required, and you can pick and choose which things you want to blow up. (my son loves to blow things up.)

I have an ADHD daughter who's got mild dyslexia and I spent 3 years trying to teach her how to read in all the different ways, and this program, got her reading in 3 months, so I've learned that kids need options and using different resources to cater to their learning style is important, and this particular program is designed for kids who have learning disabilities and attention problems, and retention problems, so kids who struggle do okay, kids who are smart do okay, I sit here finding myself repeating the catchy songs from the silly early classes my little ones do...

I homeschool and have been for four or five years now (depends on whether you count kindergarten). It's been wonderful for our family. It's definitely a lot of work, but it's incredibly rewarding and we've met a lot of great people along the way. It's also been nice relearning and reconsidering basic concepts as I teach the kids.

Someone in this thread asked what happens when kids resist being schooled at home, and I think that's a great question. It definitely happens. I don't know anyone who homeschools and hasn't encountered resistance. Those Instagram pictures you see of homeschooling, where kids are frolicking in the daisies while they learn advanced calculus...those pictures are, well, carefully curated.

And yes, it could well be that kids are more compliant at school than they are at home. The way I look at it, a lot of kids are superficially compliant in the classroom, because they want to keep the peace. Beneath the surface, though, a fair number of those kids are zoning out, feeling overwhelmed and anxious, whatever. Don't get me wrong - some kids will definitely thrive at school. But not all of them.

In a homeschool environment, the "teacher" (usually mom or dad) tends to be more aware of whatever issues the kids are having. That's true for anything from trouble learning math to trouble with discipline. Homeschooling gives you the flexibility and time to really identify and deal with whatever problems come up. And I think that's a great strength of homeschooling.

I grew up in public school. Some of my fondest school memories included preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school. Our school had tonnes of things for us kids to do:

- Arts and crafts classes for painting and pottery (lots and lots of arts and crafts)

- Board games

- Library and reading

- Doing fun stuff for every holiday like Jack-O-Lanterns for Halloween

- We had a morning “TV show” fully run by students to give morning announcements and stuff, and the student pool would rotate so we all got to be involved if we wanted to

- Band class

- Eventually lead to my participation in Cub Scouts (and eventually Eagle Scout)

- Led to my participation in soccer

- All of the teachers were nice and seemed to love teaching

- My parents became involved in the school’s PTA stuff and were friends with a lot of the teachers and faculty – they all seemed to get along

- Most of the teachers had their own children go through the same school system so there were years where they got to teach their own kids

- I made friends and their parents befriended my parents

- Seemed like any time my parents needed help/guidance they could and would ask fellow parents and teachers

- Lot of bathrooms and janitors to keep the place clean (kids do be messy)

Our preschool was right next to the local indoor pool and I got swimming lessons and learned how to swim there during preschool.

I’m just saying, consider what your local public schools have to offer, might be a pretty good setup for your kid(s).

Note I grew up somewhat “suburbia” outside of a major city – good community.

It's a lot harder than you think. My older sister homeschooled her three kids and it doesn't look like any of them will be high earners as adults. She isn't very structured. So they are a direct result of her inability to lead them.

I personally would rather move to an area with a better school system, send my kids off to school so I could have time for myself and maintaining the home, but maybe in the summer do some home school stuff while they were home with me.

I’m a teacher myself and I wouldn’t homeschool my children. There are definite pros such as framing things the way you would like your child to learn them but ultimately it is a huge undertaking with a lot of responsibility, energy and effort.

One of my children has autism and he wouldn’t receive nearly as much support outside of the school system.

I don’t know why but children tend to do better in a classroom with a teacher. The lines of each role become blurred when you are the teacher and the parent and it can be challenging to get your child to cooperate.

There is also the social skills factor if your child is alone with you all day versus learning to interact with their peers.

You may end up needing tutors as the math/science components of the curriculum increase substantially in difficulty as you approach the higher grade levels.

Teaching a child to write and to read are huge daunting tasks that actually take a lot of skill.

My husband and I both went to school to be teachers...and we plan on homeschooling. The reason they’re teaching crazy stuff in schools these days is because colleges are teaching the would-be-teachers that stuff. That beings said we moved somewhere with great schools just in case homeschooling doesn’t work for whatever reason. There are also supplemental classes you can enroll in. Our zoo does some nature learning preschool classes. You could check out stuff like that in your area.

I thought about homeschooling but this pandemic has somewhat changed my mind. My oldest daughter became very antisocial the last couple years. She is scared of school and doesn’t even like going to the store or restaurant. I am worried if I let her stay home and homeschool her, she will become even more fearful of the world. I admire all the moms that do it!

Honestly there’s a lot of middle ground between private school and homeschooling, I kind of got whiplash reading that. In my opinion, just find a nice local state school. I am personally against the idea of a parent playing too many roles for their child “parent”, “teacher”, “friend”. I don’t think it’s healthy for them xo

i think homeschooling is great! it allows for quicker progression and personalized learning. it has a lot of benefits that others here have mentioned.

one concern i have with it, however, is the lack of socializing. to make up for this, you can sign your daughter up for outside activities like band/orchestra, ballet, gymnastics, figure skating, etc
