This situation is actually one of the most optimal places to practice Amused Mastery that you will ever find.

The idea that he's flirting with your date should amuse you. (I don't mean just "act amused", I mean it should seriously amuse you. You've got a puppy coming in to try to steal your dinner - you can treat the puppy like an equal, or you can watch and see what it does from an understanding that nothing it can possibly do will harm you or shake your frame.)

If she's responsive, THAT should amuse you too. You now have an opportunity to watch - and critique - someone else's game. That opportunity should be worth more than the girl.

If the girl is more interested in him than in you, then the opportunity to observe and critique his approach and her response is DEFINITELY worth more than the girl.

This situation has happened to me only twice and both times i dealt with it with great effect. I just walk away and then go talk to someone available. Women are prideful, and the more beautiful they are the more pride they have. both withing 90 seconds they ditched the intruder and had their arm around mine. I prefer this method cause I don't come off as overtly jealous or a douche, but i think it works best when you find someone else to talk to if you just walk away and hang out by yourself it's probably gonna fail.

I'm actually confused. It seems there should be two schools of thought on this. Either you take charge and get rid of the guy, or you let it be and put responsibility on the girl. I'm of the thinking that, (assuming I choose to be exclusive with a girl) it shouldn't be my responsibility to stop all guys from flirting with my girlfriend. If I have to, what is she going to do when I'm not around? If she's the type of girl that would let some guy hijack our date, I don't want to be dating this girl anyway, and would walk away. If we rightfully proclaim that it's never not a girl's fault for cheating, then how wouldn't it be her fault for letting a guy chat her up on our date?

However, on the flip side, it is alpha to get rid of the guy. But I can't help but thinking that with that you are excusing your girl for bad behavior, that she would chat with this dude unless I stopped her.
