I personally don't have anything against getting tattoos, but I think the whole "my tattoos have meaning to me" line is pretty well played out. Kind of like the kids on Myspace who would put "music is my life" in the about me section.

It was edgy and cool at one point, sure. But it's just so common now, to me anyway, it just seems so counter intuitive. If it means so much to you, then why do you need to have an outward expression of (whatever it is?)

As Ozzy Osbourne said, these days it's less conformist to not have tattoos.

Overall: Tats on guys are not the same as tats on girls. Guys with tats are seen as edgy, and that's an attractive quality for a guy. On girls it may increase attraction to her as someone to fuck, but it reduces her perceived quality for an LTR.

For you: I have tats. My tats are ones that you will never see unless I show them to you (Important quality for professional men). On top of that, remember that tats are lifelong. I thought about each of my tats for years before I got them. I knew what I wanted and where I wanted them and thought seriously about them before I got them. I would strongly suggest knowing what you want and where for at least 6 months to a year before you get it put on your body for the rest of your life.

Your body, do what you want. If you decide to get tattooed, get a good tattoo from a professional artist who knows what he's doing.

I get my tattoos done by excellent professionals, and I don't get tattoos impulsively. Mine are fairly standard American traditional designs, nothing offensive. I currently have tattoos that are visible when I wear a t-shirt or shorts, and I plan in the future to tattoo my knuckles and possibly my neck.

If someone wants to judge me by my tattoos, then they can. Their opinion doesn't affect my life at all.

I personally have 7 tattoos. I will be finishing up my sleeve in about 6 months time. They all mean something to me,they're not "on a whim" tattoos. Here's the thing though, dont be one of those guys that's all "look at me I have tattoos,I must be edgy and cool". That's the biggest wrong thing you can do. I don't really think about my tattoos and I don't "show them off". My ink is for me, if you like them,cool. If you don't,cool. It really doesn't matter to me.

And that's basically my view with the tattoos.

I'm fairly tatted up, I don't see an issue with it for guys or girls. I've met some awesome women who are covered more than me who aren't complete BPD batshit narcissists like the old stereotype.

A good measure for telling if someone's a fucking loser based on tattoos is the QUALITY of the tattoo..

Bad tattoos:

-Tribals, always lame as fuck. Unless you're an indigenous person you should NOT have a tribal. Tattooists also hate you for getting them.

-Tattoos the guy with a machine did in his kitchen. Most of the time, they will look like shit unless he has experience in a shop.. And if he did, 9 times out of 10 he'd tell you to stop by the shop instead since he's not about to risk his career.

-Text above pubic area of some song lyrics or anything like that is usually a "SLUT" red flag.

-If the tattoo looks like absolute shit in general and doesn't look like professional quality, it's a good sign she makes poor decisions.

I'm an aspiring tattooist, and I hang out in shops a lot.. I have friends (men and women) who tattoo and tell me about all the horrible tattoos they do and how the people who get them have really shitty personalities. You can usually tell in the first minute of a verbal exchange with them.

The kind of tattoos I go for are the old school sailor jerry/ed hardy style. I'm not super hell bent on meaning behind most works, sometimes I just let friends (in shops of course) tattoo little things they drew up on me, sometimes I will get something bigger with actual meaning behind it.

I also don't show off my tattoos cause it's fucking lame. Sometimes people will ask "Oh do you have any more?" and I'll point to other spots.. If they ask to see it I'll show them. Bragging about being tattooed is weak.. It's not even an accomplishment, you just had money and were willing to have someone stab you with a needle for 2 hours to create some artwork lol..

I wish people with tattoos would just accept that they will be viewed negatively in some contexts and stop complaining about the consequences of something they went and voluntarily did. And then some people with tattoos get massively defensive about how meaningful and carefully selected their piece was like they're still trying to convince themselves it was worth it. I think overall they're mostly frivolous, and don't very much matter in the grand scheme. But I do see how the experience of getting tattoos might give a sort of adrenaline rush. Not many as many instances for that to happen naturally in our modern society.

I think that ultimately, you can do whatever you want with your body.

But the thing about tattoos is that they are relatively permanent. On the one hand it shows impulsivity, which can be a good thing. But in other ways it shows lack of control and long-term thinking, especially if it's all up and down your arm or something--clearly visible even with clothing on.

Another thing that I always thought was interesting is that the Bible and other religious texts consider tattoos to be some form a self-worship. Using your body to project something other than what "god" intended. Now, we all now that's some woo-woo bullshit. However, I do think it's somewhat true that tattoing yourself wantonly is drawing attention to yourself or your person, as opposed to your actions.

When I look at a guy who has a bunch of tattoos, it's bizarre because he looks weird not because he's impulsive or whatever, but because he's chosen to draw attention to himself by method of the shitty ink drawing on his shoulder as opposed to anything he's done. Now, women might see it the same way, but they might actually appreciate it...

I mean, I see guys with a tribal on their bicep, a sun on their shoulder, and a cross on their ribs or something. No matter how big the dude is, it makes me think he's weak willed unless there's some cohesion.

My overall opinion is that most people have shitty taste in art, or pop culture.. So when they put it on their skin it's like their shitty taste all over their body. Guess with tattoo's are usually club douchebags or artsy cunts.

I guess some people think it makes guys look tough or whatever, but it makes me think they are hipster douchebags. I really don't like girls with Tattoo's anymore either. They are generally sluts, but I physically don't like the look.

It distracts the eyes from the rack, the ass, and the face. I've been called sexist for saying so too.

I've learned to be VERY careful about ever stating my opinion on this online, because a lot of women will totally lose their shit if you say this. And I don't get why. "I find women with tattoos very unattractive" is not a controversial statement, yet I can't count the number of times somebody has bitched at me about that. It's not a mass condemnation, I'm not saying "Women with tattoos are unattractive", there's a big crucial I starting off that sentence, and yet women will go nuts over this. I'm not saying other guys DON'T like tattoos on women, and am not judging anybody. If women want to get tattoos, fine, go nuts, knock yourself out. I'm not going to want to ever see you naked afterward, but that's one dude out of billions, so why the fuck should anyone even care? It's weird, it's as if hearing that one person doesn't like it immediately makes it a crusading moral issue for many women, whereas from my perspective, the only woman on the planet who should care about my preferences is the one who wants to fuck me.

I have multiple tats and they are all symbols of important events / people in my life.

None of them are visible unless I have my shirt off.

I have plans for a huge chest piece but again if I am in a normal Teeshirt or office wear they are completely invisible.

Contrast that to your average Female tattoo. They are usually in highly visible places, with bright colours. They are like bright feathers on a bird.

They are designed for attention

Only two types of people get tattoos.

Legit rough guys: Military, mercs, nomads etc
Guys who need the tattoos. They need to paint their bodies or they'll be as beige as my wall. You can tell who these guys are right off the bat because they get tattoos that can be seen no matter what they wear. Could be some sticking out of their collars or out of their wrists. They need these tattoos to be interesting and to get laid, no question.

There is the in between though, which is the guy who gets a tattoo that's for himself and most likely won't be seen unless he's shirtless.

I love my tattoos. I'm getting another one in a few months. I get them because I like them, not because I want other people to like them. That's very important.

Plus, even after getting my first one, you tend to forget you even have them sometimes. It's nowhere near as big a deal as people make them out to be.

Do what you like with your body. In ancient times tattoos and markings were seen as marks of honor and battle. It was a glory thing. They've been washed down to such bullshit now however.

I have one. Planning on getting more. You could argue that getting tattoos are manly in the sense that you go through hours of constant pain in exchange for them. The healing isn't all that bad however.

Mine means something to me and I have it because I like to remind myself where I came from. I think that's the difference. Don't get one to be a show off or to fit in. Don't get one dumb shit tattoo cause you think it's funny. You'll regret it.

At the end of the day, regardless of what you have, maintain your frame. You can play off all sorts of shit as long as you own it yourself.

It depends on what the person has got going on I guess. A guy that has good SMV with some nice tattoo work done probably screams "Masculine, Warrior, etc...". As opposed to being basically every other generic stereotype of a person with tattoos is(Hipster, thug, sleaze, etc...).

I started getting tattoos at 18. I am now basically covered in them and the only one that shows when im in a suit is on my left hand. None of the social Norms really apply to me due to me having my own business doing nightlife entertainment and I'm an electrician during the day.

I'm very pro tattoo and while I do work out, Im not particularly jacked but stretching will be an issue if you do a lot of lifting. Then there's the permanent aspect of it. I also have a very distinct lack of body hair which was another reason for so many tattoos (they're distractions) so if you have that, it can fuck up the tattoo or it'll look weird.

The question to ask yourself is: why are you thinking about getting tattoos? Did you suddenly start thinking that it would be a great idea to have some sort of permanent image on your skin? Or are you following the herd?

Don't let other people tell you what is important and what is cool. If you have an innate desire for tattoos, by all means get them.

I have a full sleeve on my left arm and a smaller tattoo on the inside of my right arm on the bicep. From what I've heard, every girl I've been with has said they love the tattoos. I've had girls say they found me even more attractive after they found out I had tattoos. Obviously they aren't for every girl but it seems to give me that aurora of not giving a fuck and doing whatever I feel like without caring about what others think.

The stigma of tats on guys vs girls isn't "equal." It's pretty accepted that guys get tattoos, and it's all ok. I don't mind tattoos on chicks, but there can be too much, where I have my entire chest done, full right arm sleeve, left forearm, ribs, back..I'm fairly well inked over, but I wouldn't go after a chick with the same, as the stigma is she'd be trashy....which is usually true.

Another thing I've noticed is the "girly tats" that don't really have much of a real meaning behind them, where I have spent years planning mine out and working with my artist to design them..It isn't common that I run into a girl that's done the same.

Also, it's easier for guys to cover their tats than girls, I can wear a suit and no one knows I have ink, where a classy dress is most likely going to show off a girls tattoo, so "the image is ruined" if you will. I guess i can be a bit of a hypocrite in the matter that I don't want a chick that's totally covered, when I've got thousands of dollars invested in my ink.
