Suzy Parker (1950’s): 5 feet 10 inches, 35-24-36

BMI is even more constant: 15-17 for runway models, 19-20 for movie stars.

While the average women BMI has gone from 24 in the 50’s up to 28 today.

The so called unrealistic beauty standards have remained the same, in the 1950’s an average women was 10 or so pounds above the “beauty standard”, noting really to worry about. Woman BMI of 23.

ONLY 23% less is what amazes me frankly, 70% of adult women are overweight 35% are obese(in u.s) the fact that their only 23% less on average is probably too fat

plus all the plus size model ads have insane amounts of photoshop so they don't look digusting(as in disgusting skin/huge rolls while standing etc) not that they don't look pretty gross anyways, kinda of an ironic form of acceptance

The models haven't really gotten any smaller. The average woman has just become bigger.

Who cares about women's modelling other than women anyways? Who's stopping agencies from using 500 lb women? Men certainly won't rally in the streets and make a fuss about a giant lady being used to advertise make up or clothes or creams or whatever. There's no full-grown man that isn't tuning out women's ads as they pass by.

Models have very particular faces and frames which best highlight the clothes they are presenting look best on their small thin tall frames. Women strive to look like this because they are able to pull off the amazing clothes.

The vast majority of models are not runway models nor are they excessively thin. I dated a sweet thing (surprisingly, no shit tests and very endearing) who did some swimsuit type modeling for a large retail catalog, and she looked fantastic in photos and in person, but she wasn't rail skinny. She had very light and feminine curves.

I met some of her coworkers at the agency, and almost none of them were bean poles. A good number of them had pretty awesome curves along with those 22" waists.

When it comes to the plus sized models, almost none of them are metabolic syndrome fat. They're fat, yes, but they don't carry that spare tire that even skinny fat beer guzzling women carry. They still have classic lines, although I wouldn't want to touch them or have them sit on my lap.

Beyond all of that is the one key to general modeling: being hypersymmetrical on features. Their faces are very mirrored, and they tend to have similar facial structures to each other. Even the oversize ones.

I refuse to believe that the average runway model of twenty years ago only weighed 8 percent less than the average woman. Those were the days of the "waif" model. And obesity isn't a brand new problem, people were fat in the 90s too.

I suppose models are also very tall, which might help explain it, but I still suspect BS numbers.

The thing you guys have to realize about most runway models, with their flat breasts and lack of feminine physical features (hips, ass, breasts), is that they are selected to save fabric. The model can be any woman with the appropriate body but the woman isn't important - the clothing is important. A plus size woman would cost the designer more in fabric and time, it simply isn't an economical decision.

What they don't tell you about all those pretty plus size models is that they are still photoshopped to hell and back just the way skinny models are. Cellulite and stretch marks that are more prevalent in fat women require more work to be removed from the final image. So even among fat acceptance folks, you have an industry that's shaming women for not living up to an unrealistic standard of beauty.

Only way to be attractive is to be lucky and have good genes or work your ass off in the gym. Get crackin' ladies.

No one should be encouraged to starve themselves or hate their bodies because they don't match up to the unrealistic, photoshopped fictions that decorate our ads and tabloids. We would all do well to embrace a more realistic, natural, and positive attitude toward our bodies.

Apparently the fact that our body naturally deposits fat when one consumes excess calories supercedes the fact that our body naturally evolved to be biomechanically optimal with lean mass.

If you want to get to the bottom of this whole media-portrays-unrealistic-weight-standards thing, you don't look at fashion models or actresses. You look at sex symbols, and more than anything, you strip away the non-essentials and look at the industry created by men for men for the express purpose of sexual excitement - the porn industry.

Porn stars are built nothing like fashion models. I don't know where the 'unrealistic beauty standards' of mainstream media have come from, but it's not the cerebral cortices of those of us running the patriarchy.

Something about fat girls seems selfish and greedy. I doubt its a fat people thing, girls don't even look fat until they hit the super high bodyfat %s. That means these fat girls worked very hard to get fat, most fat girls make terrible companians, I myself am very very fat so don't think I'm shaming fat people, just fat girls. Lol.
