It is fairly painful to see people settling down before they even moved out of state. It's truly horrible.

I don't recommend travelling, I recommend living somewhere else. Look into working holiday visas and foreign study options. You need to stay long enough to immerse yourself in the culture, not just get a superficial taste. Another good idea is fighting camps like a kickboxing camp in Thailand.

If you can't travel cause of work, I'd recommend buying a motorcycle and ride it far as you can on the weekends and stay at hotels. I felt way better at work after doing this rather than binge watching Netflix.

After a bad oneitis break up, I decided to flip my life and go backpacking in Europe all by myself with little to no preparation for the full-fledged experience.

I ended up having panic attacks and massive anxiety throughout most of my travelling. I stuck it out for the whole month I was gone though(most time off work would allow me to take off).

I'd do it again but I would rather go with someone else or if I was to go alone again, I'd plan things ahead of time a bit more.

i moved back home with my folks after yet another big trip around the world, i hadnt been back home for twelve years. it was so crazy to see all the people who had never left, while i had been living nonstop crazyness. get in to dodge folks!

I highly recommend traveling. I didn't during my younger years, and while life is good and traveling would have definitely put me on a different path, I still regret not doing that. I wouldn't even say one has to travel outside the US, just move to areas one isn't familiar with. The website cooljobs.com has a bunch of service/travel industry related jobs from all over the world. Find out some of the national park vendors and consider working just a season/summer in a place like Denali, Glacier, or Yellowstone. The time to travel and explore and take a year off college is when one is young, especially since current healthcare law mandates that young people be allowed to stay on parents health insurance till their mid or late 20s. After talking to some young people in Glacier about seven years ago, I really wish I would have done something like that.

I am pursuing a engineering degree and I plan on moving out of state. Or better yet finding a job where I can be a road warrior & travel all the time. My dad has told me plenty of stories about his friends who did that. They would just rent a really cheap apartment and have a crappy car to sit at the air port & make bank on traveling.

Then of course all the networking opportunities and ability to be more exotic and a rare resource to the women in the area you are visiting. Even if you visit that place regularily on your travels.

No reason to think you have to "settle down". Ever. Settling down is a choice, not something you must do. It's a myth that settling down brings happiness.

Think hard about what you want. Are you settling in one place with one woman because that's what you want, or because that's what society expects of you?

I'm all for traveling, but working for free, mostly without food being paid for while you often stay in a shared housing isn't a great proposition for many people, unless you want to learn the skills to start your own organic farm.

Physical labor can feel very rewarding, but at the end of the day it sets you up for poverty as well.

English teaching gigs in China, Korea and Japan for 2k a month are more feasible for recent grads with student loan debt.

OP, you rightly advise living and working somewhere else. That is very different from "travelling". A travel holiday is cool, but being a tourist is nothing like working and living somewhere. Only by working somewhere do you get to actually the experience the culture.

That is funny, i'm literally selling my house so I can travel. I plan on using workaway. I think its important to get out and learn new cultures. Hell just traveling inside the US has had a profound effect on me, even if it was mostly for work. I'm from the PNW, so being able to travel through the midwest and then too the east coast has been great.

When I was younger I kept hearing from older more boring people that they wish they would have traveled. I didn't want to be that guy. Now I am 28 and have traveled to nearly 50 countries. Do you think I regret it? Nope. Do you ever hear anyone say they wish they had traveled less? Nope.

If you live in places that are themselves without roots (like in the cities) you will interact with other people and ethnicities and learn of their cultures.

Physical travel is superficial.

Either live in the big city and get the mixing action or go someplace and get rooted to know the place better.

In the end most will decide that being with "their own" is preferred to being with different peoples.

(but this awakening usually happens later in life)

Toured in a punk band coast to coast. You get to see how the underclass lives in their personal settings. Very humbling and motivating. Sleeping in someone who you just met's home night after night requires a lot of trust in your fellow man and empathy for their situation. Coming from a somewhat privileged perspective and seeing people living in squalor with rats coming out of stove tops and empty fridges shines a light on reality. Plus it provides good stories for your SMV.

I had a friend in high school, he was a great guy. Very outgoing, funny. No one ever had an unkind word to say about him, nor did he about anyone else.

He travelled to Thailand, became a Buddhist, and joined a monastary. We seldom hear from him anymore. When he does come home he doesn't talk much and insists on begging for everything. As in, he will not make his own bowl of cereal, someone has to give him the bowl of cereal. He sucks now.

By and large, travel is good advice. Just don't join a cult. That's probably a bit of an edge case, but... screw it, I'll say it again: don't join any cults when you go travelling. Or while you're at home. Cults are bad, m'kay?

edit: And before anyone says "oh, maybe he's better off now", no. He didn't join one of the awesome monastaries that teach Kung Fu and wire fighting. It's just meditation and being lame.

If you're British, American or Canadian and under 31 you can go to Australia for a year long 'working holiday'. You could work on a ranch, in a mine or do just about anything else you could want to do.

As soon as I was able I got the heck out of dodge. Not that home was bad, I just wanted to be elsewhere for once. Moved to California and haven't looked back. Many of the people I grew up with still live in town, if not most of them. Few live outside the state at all.

Took all three of my kids on individual trips to Europe (each trip just me and one of them). It's the greatest seeing their minds expanding right in front of you!

My daughter just graduated college in December, and is finishing a seven week trip to Australia and New Zealand next week, with a 7 hour layover in Honolulu. Rough life!

Exactly this. There were some posts also about traveling in TRP a while ago that triggered me to do this, so I bought my own ticket to Thailand just few days ago.

I've also moved from my hometown to the capital city of my country several years ago. Life is tough here. I was an ignorant stubborn back then, but I learned a lot here. The competition (and robbery) I experienced, they're all worth it.

Travel is not for everyone. The creator of The Adventures of Tintin wrote stories set in places around the world in great detail. Yet, he rarely traveled outside of Belgium.

Personally, I love to travel, within limits, but don't think it's required for a rich life or rich perspective on life.

Unfortunately travel is classist, and many can't realistically afford to fly or sleep in hotels.
