It's crazy to see women close to 40 wanting to give birth. Don't they know the risks? Instead of writing such an awkward paragraph, she could have said I'm looking for a single father to have a family with and that would have made a lot more sense. "But I know this one woman who had a baby at 42, so that means it is totally reasonable for me to expect that to be the case with me!"
Even discounting the probability of a woman her age being able to get pregnant and said pregnancy being a high risk for factors like Down syndrome, having a baby at that late of a point in life is also a greater struggle, as you will not be nearly as energetic as you would be over a decade ago. Which makes having children an even greater struggle, as you will be less fit to deal with the challenges of raising a child than if you were in your 20s or 30s.
[–]kozboz033 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (18 children) | Copy Link
My mum was 43 when I was born and I didn't turn out to have down syndrome or autism or anything like that, idk why everyone assumes thats something guaranteed to happen, but she's in her 60s now and I cant deny that raising me has definitely worn her out over the years
[–]houseoftolstoyUnchivalrous Christian 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It is not guaranteed, but the risks are most certainly higher. High enough that it makes the prospect unwise when compared to having children younger. Perhaps it is a bit different when a woman had children previously when younger (as the fertility window is pushed back as a result), but the risk is still there.
[–]WarezMyDinrBitc 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah my mom was 36 when I was born, 15 years since she had her first and only with our dad. He was 48 at the time I was born and passed 25 days before I turned 20. I don't look at these so much as the kid will have health problems. I look at them like the parents could miss out on so much of the child's life due to age / health.
[–]kozboz033 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Thats true, I sometimes worry if my dad will still be alive by the time I'm 30 since its a common thing in our family for the men to die in their 60s or 70s

Yeah my father's dad was a cop and dropped dead on the job at age 58 from a heart attack. My dad died after a triple bypass and stroke at age 67. Men on my dad's side don't live to be old. But the women live to be 80-90+.

[–]ArrowGantOne 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
if you raise them right
Yeah, by adding that key phrase it lets me know you probably are a good parent. Wish there were more of you all.
But even in elementary school kids noticed my parents were older. I never felt any shame about it at all. However I have always looked much younger than my age. (My joke is that when I was born I looked like a fetus.) At various times BOTH my parents were asked if I was their grandchild. THAT did NOT go over well with either one of them. But my brother who is 15 years older didn't like people thinking he was my dad even more.

[+]lanocheoscura 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Someone told me the following and when I observed old people the more I was sure he was right:
"The person who gets more religious when they get older are the ones who did most fucked up shit when they were younger. They start to fear from God and pray to ask forgiveness for their souls."
I know a couple of old distant relatives/people who are praying every day and most religious people who actually did most fucked up shit. The ones that I hear nothing but good things are usually less religious.
[–]durianbusuk 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
This. THIS. I wish I can upvote this more.
In Asia, it's always a particular religion that they convert into, the one where 'all is forgiven' and they feel that they can reboot with a clean slate. And also a lot of them come from an environment where 'karma' or what goes around comes around is a widely accepted concept. The amount of messed up crap they've done in the past and the (huge) number of people they've wronged creates a real sense of fear that all of it will come back and bite them later in life.
The funny thing is they then act all nice and righteous and tries to lecture others on how to be a good person, on top of trying to convert them. Make no mistake their core character is still shit and you catch glimpses of it in their behaviour from time to time.

My uncle used to be a party animal. There were stories about his 4' rainbow bong. He signed up for one of the branches of the armed services and the night before he was supposed to head to boot camp he had a going away party. He got way too drunk and just didn't go. Few weeks later some soldiers and a police officer (maybe MP?) showed up at his door and arrested him. They put him in whatever jail they put military criminals in. Tiny room all by himself with far fewer "rights" than even a normal prison.
8 months later he was brought to a hearing. They asked if he had learned his lesson. "Yes sir". They asked if he wanted to still be in the armed forces. "No sir". He was dishonorably discharged and sent home.
He found god HARD in those 8 months. He came out a totally different person. No more drinking. No more drugs. He was a pastor/minister/whatever for a fairly large church after getting out of a religious college. Wife, kids, house in the suburbs. The only one of his brothers that succeeded early in life (after failing hard).
I know it's just one example, but there was no "I'm a changed man because I found GAWWWWWD!".
The stick was finally ripped out of his ass when his wife divorced him and took the kids because she got the house, he got to keep his other property which was a very extreme "fixer upper". It was condemned. But he had to live there until he recovered financially. The kids could not be there until it passed an inspection. He's still religious but no longer has unwavering faith in god. He feels screwed over after doing everything right after his fresh start.
[–]soonershooter 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
He didn't complete boot camp, so I highly doubt that he got a dishonorable discharge....which means he lied about not getting into the military. Don't fret, it happens all the time.
[–]V_MKilodick Converter 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Its even stranger in that the MPs can't arrest you until after you swear in, and you swear in at the MEPS station about five minutes before the bus leaves to basic, so the window is rather narrow. If you refuse to continue showing up, right until you sign the contract and do the swearing in ceremony, your recruiter will be super pissed off for quota reasons, but there's nothing they can actually do to you.
Also if you go AWOL you get sent back to your unit to be chaptered out. Your assigned unit has to deal with UCMJ and all the paperwork, not some rando generic "army" and certainly not 8 months later.
The rest of the story sounds realistic.
[–]Holy-poop 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When I read stories like this I wonder why men still get married. He, just like every other man, would've arrogantly sworn that his wife was 'the one' if you were to question his decision.
I'm getting to the age where I'm starting to see divorce happen amongst my separated married peers and misery set in amongst those still married. I could never do it. My ex-girlfriend was very upset when I said that bluntly. Perhaps next time I'll be more covert.

I'm an atheist auto mechanic in the biggest radio market in the world. There are at least 3 fulltime Christian music stations on the air, and a huge number of my clients have one tuned in. IDK how they can do it. Just the distance from parking spot to shop bay is enough to spike my A1C with the sugary, milquetoast glurge playing. It's like North Korea, where all the pop music is about the great leader. How do people not just reach a point of, "Yeah, yeah... whatever."?

She gave other men the greatest gift a woman can give a man - her beauty years, best fertility years and high bonding potential years with a low body count (no more than 5 sexual partners).
She brings baggage of: - failed relationships and hook-ups for over 20 years imprinted in her brain - nearly non existent bonding potential due to a high body count - another man's child - probably another man if the baby daddy is somewhat in the picture - inevitable aging health problems coming soon
Why would any good man want that? There is everything to loose and nothing to gain.

One has to wonder why she's not hunting a born-again Brad at church if she's so damned holy. Well, besides the fact that guys who are flying solo at church are the guys you move away from on the subway.
[–]redditfelosifer 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
True about solo guys in church, hence why she isn't looking at church. I think there is another reason - the church Brads are either a Pastor, Deacon, song leader, or some other leadership position and they all have attractive wives they marries young during or right after college And even if for some reason they were single, those guys would never choose a woman like this. Never.
[–]Harry_TeakHas a trained eye for the kilodick stare. 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They'd pick her for extracurricular fun but she's out to get wifed up. But like most of these sad leftovers she'd never settle for the type of guy who'd wife her. About the best she can hope for is to be some 60-70 year old guy's bowling trophy wife.

[–]RapTorSlevin 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, they killed no innocent, that's basic human decency.
But, why can't they extend their basic human decency and not act so entitled? Was there a misprogramming somewhere in their heads?

I miss the way old fashioned 80s analog film cameras put the time and date on the corner of each photo. Would not be surprised to see a 2010 date stamped on the photo...
