TL;DR: Trying something new with asking girls out. Some reply positively, but others misunderstand and mention other friends.
I have finally gotten around to the idea of being more assertive when asking a girl out on a date. Instead of 'Are you free for drinks on wednesday?' or 'I would love to catch dinner with you on Thursday', I am now using phrases like 'I'm drinking on Wednesday. Come.' and 'Let's grab dinner' for example.
Problem is, however, some girls might suggest bringing friends. There was one particular case where a girl, last minute said 'a friend from mine is on a budget, are there any deals?'
Either the person in question misunderstood me, this is some kind of 'shit test', or fully understands but is doing this anyway.
Conventional wisdom states that explicitly mentioning that it's a date is bad. It freaks the other party out and puts a ton of pressure on, while suggesting a meet up eases things a bit.
However, I seem that I am not making it through that I want a 1-on-1 face to face meet up, not a group hangout where I will not have the girl's undivided attention.
Thoughts?

You aren't saying anything wrong, they're probably just not that attracted to you. Would a girl bring her friend on a date with Brad Pitt?
Don't do dinner dates.
Don't do drinks either unless there's something else interesting going on - girls get bored easily if it's only conversation with a guy. Not saying it's impossible, but it's so routine for an attractive girl that they won't bother unless your SMV is +2 theirs.
Ask more girls out.

They are perfectly fine, but it puts more pressure on the girl to be the source of fun and it sounds boring if you haven't had the opportunity to game her enough. It's better to do something you want to do - even if that means getting drinks in a place/way that YOU genuinely think is interesting/cool.
tl;dr: think about how you're gonna have FUN before you think about how you're gonna GAME the girl.

That's all true. And 90% of the dates I arrange wind up being 1:1 drinks. But for the top girls, who have drinks with new guys and their girlfriends all the time, "action dates" are better. The Book of Pook puts this better than I could:

Appreciate the thoughtful response. I tend to agree with everything you said, including that linked post and the top-girls-pedestalizing bit (although there is a need to calibrate differently with hotter vs. uglier girls).
I think we can agree on this: Yes, you do need to connect on a deep emotional level (whether it's genuine or not) - it's absolutely required - but it's so much more appealing and authentic if you can also pull the girl into your world rather than simple meeting and chatting on neutral territory (e.g. a generic bar), whether that's through action or something else is entirely dependent on whatever truly makes your world.
