tl;dr: Based on past experience too: if you look like you're looking, you won't find anything. And look for the ones who don't expect anyone to be interested.

The entire first half of the night was an unremarkable post-work Friday with no plans: have some beers with guys from work near the office, open and close a few sets that didn't work for me (mostly other post-work groups, so too many male coworkers playing guardian).

Got one #-close though from the "where are you from?" "where do you think?" game, and on hearing the answer "Germany" singing a brief clip from a Mozart aria in German to the music teacher asking. I'll need to brush up a bit if I follow up.

Moved through a few bars in Roppongi sarging solo, mostly opening foreigners who looked touristy. Got a facebook-close (we need a term for that, but "f-close" is taken...) with a visiting Spaniard walking down the street as she headed into the metro around 9pm. She's here another three weeks, so maybe something if my FB shit test passes.

No more friends out, so if anthing is going to happen it will be at one of the clubs, so I head over to one. Sausagefest. Seems like the only women there are the foreign working girls. So around 10pm I say fuck it, and decide to go home.

But it's still early so first, another drink; a scotch'n'soda. I carry it over to an area with tables. None of them are free, so I go over to one that has a few women standing around it not dancing or talking much, put my glass down in between a few of theirs, then say "hey, I hope you don't mind I'll just use this space here." and turn back to watch the rest of the club without waiting for an answer. [Take up their space, alpha display]

I turn back to take a sip, and one of the women (HB6, dyed brown hair, trying too hard) says "what are you drinking?" in pretty bad English. I answer "scotch and soda." she says "isn't it strong?" and I say "most good drinks are." I see mint leaves in her drink, and continue "I don't like sweet drinks like mojitos." [Neg]

She says to her friend behind me in Japanese, "Did he say doesn't like mojitos? I can't understand. But he's so cool! Try your English!" I turn around to see HB7 shaking her head and replying "no, I just want to sit here, you go ahead." She looks at me and gives a "hello, I'm just being polite, talk to my friend" kind of smile. But, then she looks me over again and kind of blushes [IOA] while turning away and looking at her watch feigning boredom.

So I say, in English "I guess you're just too tired to be having any fun if you want to just sit here all night."

She looks back surprised, in English saying "No, this just isn't my kind of place." I say "whatever, you friends dragged you here I guess?" She says "yes, they're all looking to hook up with somebody but I just don't do that sort of thing." [shit test? or rejection?]

I say "hey that's cool, I'm just here for my last drink before I go home too." and turn way leaning against the table to look out again, completely ignoring them.

A minute or so passes, and her other friend [HB8] says across the table behind me in Japanese, "don't you like him? You should talk to him again." So I turn back to HB6 and say in Japanese "If she's not interested it's fine with me. I'm just here to have a drink."

HB7 immediately grabs my shoulder turning me towards her and saying in English "you speak Japanese? That's not fair, you knew what we were saying the whole time!" To which I replied that I was really just there to have a drink and didn't care what they were saying.

But then I turned and looked at her for a moment. She had a look of surprise and anticipation on her face, expecting me to say something else. So I paused a second, still looking, opened my mouth as if to speak, and then broke contact saying "Oh, nevermind." [now there's a mystery]

She turned me towards her again, saying "what? What were you going to say?" So I said "if I had been looking for something tonight, I probably would have noticed you sooner." She melted.

We spend the next few minutes in shit tests, "what do you do? why are you here? are you married?" which I answered with a combination of truth and mystery. She still had her hand on my shoulder at the beginning, so I kept it there and worked up the kino while talking. I managed to rotate us around the table to isolate in a corner, and do a little dancing when a song from our high school era came on. That's when I moved in and took a K-close.

After the kiss she started putting up some resistance; it was getting close to last train so I negged her with "Oh I see, you're married. OK go home, I don't need to be messing around like that." She said "no, my son's with his father tonight, I'm just not used to doing anything like this." [qualifying her hesitancy while giving me a shit test, insinuating that I do this all the time] I said "everyone needs some time to themselves, you should enjoy it." [now that I know she's a divorced milf, the hesitancy and desire all make sense]

Now, I was already getting tired--had planned to go home an hour earlier--and said, "look, your friends have all disappeared, they've probably already gone off with someone." And it was true; I hadn't seen any of them in a while. She hesitated but didn't say anything, so I said "look, my place is nearby, I'll make you some tea and we can talk where it's not so loud that we can't hear each other. There's a taxi stand right there, so you can get back home easy. Besides, I have to get up early tomorrow so you can't stay anyway." [change of venue and ASD]

So we walk back, making sure to go through a park I know on the way to get a bit of peace, quiet, nature, and another long k-close.

Finally as I'm unlocking the apartment she says again, "I never do this." [last attempt at ASD] and I say "we haven't done anything yet, and besides it's cold. Have that cup of tea and warm up."

Inside the apartment I avoid turning on the bright overheads, leaving her in the entryway while I go throw my coat on the couch. She sees a nice candle lamp I have on the credenza, and says, "wow, I love candles."

I say, "so do I," and light it. I come over to help her off with her jacket, and the kiss she pulls me into ends up moving straight to the bedroom.

I actually did have to be up early, so we woke up around 6am, had a morning round, and I gave her directions to the station. Got her #-close as she left. Mailed her Sunday night, got an "I was thinking about you all weekend, but didn't think you would call! Yes I'll go for drinks again, let me know when!"

Never did have that cup of tea.
