Eventually we just started spending all our time together (we lived and worked at a hotel) so we'd been fast friends,I was actually his wing man at first. We looked forward to spending time together, would start texting a lot more, still seemed very platonic , then after a few months, when there was a party at the live in accommodation even when we wernt hanging out we'd seem to know where each other were, catch eyes, after everyone else went to bed we'd stay up just lounging around smoking and listening to music, one of these said parties we just had a look and kissed and that was it really, still together 5 years later.

Does friends -> more than friends happen? Sure.

Is it a good pickup/mating/dating strategy for men? HELL NO

Studies show women view more friendships with the opposite sex as platonic than men do. In other words, men have a tendency to OVER estimate the opposite sex's sexual interest in them and women tend to UNDERESTIMATE it.

When polled, men say they will sleep with MOST of their female friends given the chance. Women say they would NOT sleep with most of their friends and when told that men WOULD their reactions were all the same:

I do think cognitive dissonance plays a role here: Women CHOOSE to be obvlivious to this fact because they like having guys as friends, they like the attention, they like the emotional support and they even enjoy some of the perks, benefits and resources. But they vehemently deny there is a sexual component there, even when the poor friend-zoned bastard is making overt displays of affection that everybody else with a pulse and two eyes can easily see.

Even her girlfriends will say "Well, DUH he's SO into you." and she be like "Oh, what? Him? No way. He's not into me. At all. We're just BUDS." Uh huh. Riiiiiight.

We see what we want to see man. Men and women both.

I hope you're not counting on it. This almost never happens. Women typically view you a certain way, from the very begging and that position is usually permanent. First impressions are usually lasting ones.

The way that I do it is that I let my intentions known by always flirting since it just comes naturally to me, even if she tells me that she wants to remain just friends. I still do the same things that I was doing before she even told me that, because if she still hangs out with me knowing how I am then it just means that she still interested so its just a good way to keep building the tension until she desires me enough to make a move.

I think I've ended up fucking most of my female friends at some point. It can sometimes lead to a FWB relationship or dating. The reasons vary and I'm not sure if there is any "right" answer to this for how it happens but I can give some general points about my situation.

I maintain friendships with ex girlfriends and a number of my close friendships started out as a one night stand. So a female friend in my group who is considering hooking up with me knows in advance that she has a social pass to have a casual hook up without being called a slut because most of the girls in the group have done it.
I talk about my sex life with my female friends and am comfortable hearing about their sex life. I'll gasp in shock at how vanilla their boy is and offer tips for ways to get him to try being a bit more adventurous. I also give suggestions on things she could get her boyfriend to try doing if he's still struggling to help her reach climax. I don't try to break up people's relationships but if they do breakup because of a dead bedroom she's usually going to be coming round to my place to try out all the stuff he wouldn't do with her before she goes back to dating safe guys.
I treat the women in my life as humans with their own desires rather than conquests or property.
If I'm sexually attracted to a friend, I'm going to tell them as much. There's no expectation of reciprocity more of a "Nah girl, you're totally hot. I'd definitely hit that!" and then move on. I'm also pretty physical in my friendships, so cuddle piles while watching Netflix is just something that happens because the central heating never got fixed. The odd bum slap or kiss on the cheek is just something that happens among friends.
