I've worked in bars before and have seen everything. If you got shut out, let it go. Don't be the creepy guy by sticking around, when it was already told you were not wanted in their group. Move on but be careful. People know what you're doing, especially the bartenders. Don't be "that fucking guy."

"Wow, someone's been having a rough night!" say it while looking at the girls, and with cheeky grin. If they're into it, you can either bounce, "You girls can handle this one, I'll be back later," or try to force your way in, "You girls don't mind if I dance with you, do you."

Treat him like a child throwing a tantrum at the store. You ignore him and talk to the adults.

I'd just say something like, "Actually I'll be at the bar, have a nice dance" then leave and reopen later.

If you ever get blown out of a set, but not by the girl who your after (so you're blown out but not rejected), then you should always reopen the girl later.

I would just let it go. The guy could probably tell what your intentions were and was being overly protective of the girls. Unless one of them actually showed interest in you I doubt it had any chance of that encounter going anywhere.

Wow, I'm almost never at a loss for words, but this might have done it. I probably would have stammered something off about him being insecure, which would have just left me looking even worse.

Before you seek a solution, take a look at the problem.

What makes you think that it's OK to approach women when they have company. I know that's what many people advocate in here, but... there's a difference between writing and doing. What's your experience in the field? Are you successful approaching women who have company of guys? Do you enjoy when a guy approach the woman you are with?
Maybe you don't have the proper skill to pull off something like that. There are quite a bit of women out there who are unaccompanied by guys; and clearly open to meeting people.

Make sure target is facing you. Where ever the girl faces, that's her reality.

Next time I wouldn't even try to friend the guy a jealous guy. Has never worked for me. Let him friend you instead.

Dude, he was fucking assertive, responded quickly, and was most likely able to cast it in a positive, protective light using preexisting rapport. He earned his win. Sometimes you just get outmatched. Not saying the other recommendations would not work, but if he had successfully built up a strong frame as being a responsible, intelligent decision maker, then it is HARD to unseat that frame with just a opener and witty response.
