"I have an admission to make, I've got a school-girl crush on you right now," she said, while batting her eyelashes.

It was about midnight, and everybody at the party was sufficiently drunk. My game was obviously paying off, because this girl was proclaiming a school-girl crush. That's music to my ears.

"So then what are we waiting for?" I reach for her shoulder and hold my hand there for a second as I spoke, then let it drop. "You're taking me out to dinner this week."

"Oooo. How about pasta? I love pasta."

"Ok, how are we going to make that happen?"

"Give me your phone and I'll put myself in. Make sure you text me your number!" She grabbed the phone out of my hand and immediately filled in her number.

I was in. But I wasn't stopping that night. The problem is that this lead would likely go cold if I didn't act now.

Unfortunately, there were enough people at this party that one of her girlfriends quickly found her chatting with me in the kitchen and broke her free of my trance, grabbed her by the wrist and said, "Come on! We have to go do something!"

That was the last time I talked to her.

A lot of guys go for the phone call a few days later. I don't. A phone call and a left message limits your contact options to one-shot. Girls rarely check their voice mail and if they don't recognize the number, they may never actually know you called. I always go for the text, with a quick introduction of my name and a call to action. "Are you free thursday?"

In this case, that was the end of it. One text, and no response.

There's a lot of pressure when trying to get girls to make the close tonight. Get a kiss, get a number, or go for the home-run, and do it tonight. And there's some really good reasoning behind that. Girls flake. If you work hard on getting a girl's attention, your chances of winning her over diminish over time. So the question I keep asking myself is why do girls flake?

And the answer isn't great.

Our desire to close quickly because girls flake causes girls to be flakier. (What?)

Girls act according to their feelings. Guys act according to the logic in their mind.

When I get nervous or don't feel like contacting a girl, I tell myself- buck up trooper. Time to put your money where your mouth is. My entire life is acting against my gut intuition of fear and anxiety in order to get what I want.

Women, on the other hand, act on their gut, and use it to determine what they want! And the gut is a fickle creature.

Sure, the night of the party, she was REALLY into me. Heavy flirting, lots of smiles. But the cocktail of emotional chemicals in her head are going to do some crazy things now. The next day she wakes up and realizes she drank too much. She doesn't feel good, pretty sick to her stomach. That bad feeling is already over-shadowing the buzz from our initial encounter. She may feel slightly ashamed. Did I really get up on the table and dance in front of everybody last night? This bad feeling can easily be attached to the experiences that were even good.

At this point, she just wants to forget about the night. That guy she met? It's surrounded by bitter or less than stellar feelings. And girls use the entire emotional landscape to determine how they feel about parts in the landscape.

The things that can change a girl's emotions are NOT actually related to you. She didn't make a conscious decision to no longer be into meeting up with you, she just knows that her feelings aren't the same as they were last night. And now she's going to flake.

And that's the crux of the matter. Girls emotions need to be cultivated. It is our job to make the girl feel how we need them to feel. This isn't manipulation! This is true, even in long term relationships. That's why we buy girls flowers and take them to dinner, that's why we write poems on valentine's day and do other little things (in between acting like an alpha, of course). The entire goal is to make sure the girl has the right emotional cocktail in her head to feel the way she does... because she's absolutely helpless against bad feelings.

Ever notice when a girl says she "just doesn't feel it anymore," that she's made up her mind? There is no chance of redemption because she's convinced these emotions are indicative of some higher order of magic that brings love together, and drives it apart. She doesn't understand why she was attracted in the first place, and now she doesn't understand why she isn't. That's not to say you couldn't still cultivate attraction if you're given the chance, only that girls rely entirely on emotions to make decisions, and therefore are not in the business of controlling their emotions.

So how do we limit flakiness?

Stop focusing on short-game. Closing tonight seems like your only option to prevent flakes, but there's an easier way to engender the feelings you want a girl to feel about you. Go for the long-game.

Now I want to mention that this doesn't mean stick to one girl for long periods of time. In fact, trying long-game with one girl is certain to fail, because you're going to obsess about one girl.

In order for girls to have a more balanced feeling of you, you need repeated exposure in different contexts. That's basically it. In order for a girl to start developing an emotional attachment to you that is separate from the emotional response to the environments, you need her to be able to contrast you against different environments in repeated exposures.

This allows her to start developing feelings and opinions of you that are not drowned by the feelings caused by other events that night.

So today, I introduce to you, the long-game mentality.

Start being flirty and spontaneous with everybody you meet. If you see a girl who is absolutely going to let you close that night, go for it, otherwise make sure you game EVERYBODY.

What you're doing is planting seeds (metaphorical seeds only please!). If you leave a positive impression on everybody you meet, there's a chance (albeit a small one) that you may bump into them again in the future. Carry on your game.

This technique really works great if you go to local parties that share groups of people. This technique also works if there are people who regularly visit clubs or bars. What you're doing is slowly building positive emotional memory in girls' minds. This will help them feel more invested in you when you make a move.

Some examples of how the flirting full-time attitude pays off.

One girl I ran into says she remembers me from a party four years ago. She mentions I was a huge flirt. I already have a history with her. Could I have planned this meeting? Not at all- but my full-time flirting with everybody mentality allowed this long-game play to work itself out. We can exchange numbers and meet up later, and she'll be able to distinguish how she feels about me apart from how she feels about the night.

A girl I wasn't expecting to run into ever again ended up being at a few bars I was at three or four times within a month. At first she really didn't like me much, but now she's grown very warm. When I call her, she'll recall her long-term emotional memory of me and I'll be able to close- something that simply would never have happened if I tried to close the night I met her.

A girl who works at a grocery store or restaurant is a great long-term play. Every time I check out, I flirt and make a few jokes. She is starting to associate me with feeling good, something that's hard to do since guys who might try to pick her up at work probably already weigh-in negatively because it happens too much.

These are examples of how long-term game can really pay out. Does this mean abandon your short-term game? Of course not. But it means that you should consider EVERY person you meet a long-term project of increasing their level of attraction to you. You never know when you're going to meet somebody again, and that long-term emotional memory you're building with everybody you meet will start to pay off.
